Living Room / Re: Kick procrastination's ass: Run a dash [2005]
« Last post by app103 on August 02, 2011, 12:13 PM »
That article eventually lead to this one, which was the inspiration behind one of my apps (Instant Boss)
2077
Quite a few people use my Instant Boss for the pomodoro technique.

If you want some global hotkeys, that wouldn't be too hard to add to it. I am not too good at picking suitable ones that are comfortable for most people's fingers, so you'd have to suggest some. (I have an odd typing style)

I would also be open to feature suggestions, as long as you keep in mind that I am not as talented as I may seem when it comes to coding, and there is a lot I can't do....and some things that might seem easy to someone else may take me a bit of time.
2078
What do you all use to always have a file/folder sort to the bottom?

Delete.

If it really has to be de-prioritized that badly...There's most likely no real reason to keep it.

Why assume that pinning at the bottom is a method of de-prioritizing? I could see where in some cases you may have pinned so many at the top that it might be getting pretty crowded there and you decide to start pinning some at the bottom for quicker, easier access.  ;)
2079
Depending on what I'm doing, I use an exclamation point (majority of the time) or a tilde.  Some file managers don't sort the tilde to the top but (almost?) all sort the exclamation point to the top.

+1. I use the !.

You can also do multiples: ! !! !!! etc. to provide "levels" of importance.

 :)

I have a folder from way back on my first computer called

!!~~My Downloads
 ;D

And I have a folder from my father from about 2000 that had half the contents of Tucows, sorted into subfolders, one for each app, each folder prefixed with a category number to sort apps by type. That drove me absolutely nuts.

I have even changed the icons on folders to make them stand out more.

But I recently spent a few weeks immersing myself in Ubuntu and decided not to name files & folders like that any more. It really makes the transition more difficult when things either don't sort like you are used to, or they just don't sort at all.

I have decided to rely more on Filebox Extender while in Windows, and just pin them to the favorites menu. That's a behavior change that does transfer well to Ubuntu.

Y'know... It just occurred to me... I never hear about breakage on Linux upgrades...  :o

Ummm...it happens. It was the reason why I removed Ubuntu from my system and went for a fresh install. Too much broken stuff. Every upgrade broke more.

That crossrider stuff is considered malware. (Google+Twitter and Google+Facebook)

They change your default search engine without asking and tamper with your email, possibly giving the developer full access to the content of your email messages.

I just keep a shortcut to my hosts file on my Quicklaunch, passing it as a command line parameter to Notepad2. Just have to remember to uncheck/check "Read Only" under the file menu before and after making any changes.

For a second there (when I saw the title) I thought this was regarding a technical book about how to use FaceBook ... I damn-near came unwound when I saw that.

Actually, if O'Reilly had any books on Facebook, I would expect them to be about developing apps with the Facebook platform and not about how to use Facebook as a user.  ;)

What made that Kitten vs. Scary Thing video so good was how well the music fit it...almost as if it was composed for the video.

Living Room / Re: Can someone help me find this research paper/publication?
« Last post by app103 on July 19, 2011, 02:29 AM »
According to this page, they are not all available in electronic format. I downloaded their pdf list of all available publications, and the one you want is not listed exactly how you quoted.

This one was listed however:

Summerfelt, S. T., Hankins, J. A., Summerfelt, S. R., & Heinen, J. M. (1993). Modeling continuous culture
with periodic stocking and selective harvesting to measure the effect on productivity and biomass
capacity of fish culture systems. Paper presented at the Techniques for Modern Aquaculture, St.
Joseph, MI.

You may have to contact them and specifically ask for more information on it, and where to get a copy. Email address is at the bottom of this page.

This is kind of old, and I wasn't sure where I first found it so I had to go back through all the pages in this thread to check. Every once in awhile something will remind me of this and it will end up stuck in my head.

Ya know, part of me feels obligated to like something called the Indian Nipple Song ... But that's really weird. Catchy tune. But weird.

(I think I liked it...  :-\), (hehe)

I know what you mean, the darn things been going round in my head since APP posted it (damn you!!)

You're welcome.  :D

What does Facebook offer? Virtual friends?
You need the internet for your real friends?

Statements like that seem to imply that people you have met online are not real people, or can not be real friends. Virtual implies artificial.

Maybe that has been your experience, but it sure isn't mine. I probably have more real friends online than in meatspace, and more virtual friends long before I ever had access to an internet connection.

Yeh, if there only was some way to stay in contact with them (like ICQ/AIM/MSN/Y!IM/Jabber/... or e-mail or, hmm, ever heard of a phone or something?) ... sooo glad that we all have Facebook!  :D

I don't see much difference between any of those. Except for phone, they are all free 3rd party online services in which you essentially are the product and not the customer.

Liquid G+ userstyle: http://userstyles.or...tyles/50187/liquid-g

liquid g+.jpg

And some goodies from Micah Whittman (Yes, he is a DC member, so if you like his stuff, you can easily show your support) Micah is legendary for his enhancements to Friendfeed, and he has been busy enhancing our experiences on G+ too!

http://wittman.org/g...gle-plus-extensions/

GooglePlusPlus User Mute - The googleplusplus_user_mute userscript / extension for Google+ (aka Google Plus aka G+) mutes all posts by specific users. Click MUTE USER link next to the Public/Limited status. Once muted, a placeholder for each post appears with {User Name} UNMUTE, which if clicked will stop muting that particular user.

GooglePlusPlus Default Circle - The googleplusplus_default_circle userscript / extension for Google Plus (aka Google+ aka G+) adds a star next to each circle stream name. The star can be clicked to set or unset one circle stream as your default. When a default is set, going to the Stream view (which is an aggregate of all your circles) you automatically get redirected to your default stream.

GooglePlusPlus Hide Images - googleplusplus_hide_images is a user script for Google Plus (aka Google+ aka G+) that adds a button under each Google Plus post image to hide it (toggle show / hide). Hides the image on original post and all shared posts. Tired of an animated GIF that keeps getting shared over and over in different posts? – hide it once an forget about it.

GooglePlusPlus Hide Comments - The googleplusplus_hide_comments userscript for Google Plus adds a Hide Comments or Show Comments link on each post; this feature is sticky (the hidden or shown state is recorded in the browser’s local storage).

GooglePlusPlus Search With Google - googleplusplus_search_with_google is a user script for Google Plus (aka Google+ aka G+) that toggles the built-in search input Find People with another option: Search Google Plus with the Google search engine using the site: filter.

GooglePlusPlus Hide Sidebars - The googleplusplus_hide_sidebars is a user script for Google Plus (aka Google+ aka G+) that adds a feature to hide/show left and right side bars, and makes the main content wider. This feature is sticky and will show either a Hide Sidebars link or Show Sidebars link.

Sorry, but I just can't suspend my disbelief enough to accept ravenous and cannibalistic walking corpses. No matter how much biowarfare and viral technology gets dragged in to support the concept.

Same goes for vampires. I liked it better when it was more a case of some sort of dark magic and a bit less 'scientific' (and maybe pornographic) than most vampire stories are these days. Dracula was scary because there was no rational or understandable reason for why he came to exist.

My dad loves horror movies. The way he explains it is this:

Horror movies don't scare me, no matter what. Real life is scary, horror movies aren't. Horror movies are an escape from the horrors of real life.

Living Room / Re: How viable is using ads as way to monetize a web service?
« Last post by app103 on July 08, 2011, 02:36 PM »
You will need a lot of traffic and a lot of clicks to earn that much. I am earning about $10/month on ALL of my sites, combined, and that's with using 4 different ad networks.

You really need to know where your traffic is coming from before you can decide on what kind of ads will work best for your site.

If it is coming from search engines, then use Adsense and blend it into your site's theme the best you can.
If it is repeat traffic from regular users, then go with something like Project Wonderful.
If the traffic is from both, use both.

If your traffic is from social media sites like Twitter, StumbleUpon, Facebook, Friendfeed, etc. forget about it...they don't click ads.

If you want to control everything yourself and sell advertising directly, good luck! While the potential to make more is there, finding people to sell your spots to is difficult.

General Software Discussion / Re: Sticking to TODO software
« Last post by app103 on July 05, 2011, 05:04 AM »
You need to have multiple todo lists...your main one where you tell yourself to work on projects x y and z, and one for each project, where you break the projects down into smaller parts. Might try adding to the tasks in the list some indicator of time estimates. If you find that your estimates for each task exceeding the time you have, break it down some more so it doesn't. If you can manage to break it down so that each task only takes an hour or 2 at most, you will be less reluctant to start and accomplish more with your time. That feeling of biting off more than you can chew can lead to procrastination, where you avoid tasks that take too long to complete.

This is one of the reasons why I like a good sticky notes app like Notezilla instead of or in addition to a traditional todo application, where I can have memoboards for each project with each task on a note and a main memoboard with each project listed. Setting up alarms on tasks to alert me that things need to be done is important to me. I have adopted a "do this now" attitude towards any alarm notification, and try not to hit the snooze on it if I possibly can.

My problem is avoiding the lists, not the actual tasks. I won't remember to read my todo list once it is made if the tasks don't get in my face and remind me that they need to be done. Heck, I wouldn't even remember to pay my bills if they didn't get in my face with a sticky note alarm.  :-[

Sounds like a case for NAS with good synchronisation software.

Actually this is what I do with my laptop - I keep all important data synced with my desktop.
-Carol Haynes (July 01, 2011, 02:46 AM)

But remember to unplug it, otherwise, if you get hit, you could lose your NAS and everything on it.

My income does now depend on the data on my machine so that really has to be my priority in protecting. Combined with the downtime a dead machine causes, a backup pc makes a very great deal of sense.

A backup machine does make perfect sense, but it doesn't need to be as glorious as your main machine. It only needs to be good enough to get you by till you can replace the main machine. (my 2 backup machines are P4 Prescott, main machine is a Q6600) But once you put it together and set it up with the essential software you need to keep you going, UNPLUG IT. Otherwise, if you end up losing your main machine to a lightning strike, you will probably also lose your backup machine too, if it is also plugged in at the time.

General Software Discussion / Re: Sticky notes for Linux?
« Last post by app103 on June 30, 2011, 06:06 AM »
Anyway, as you probably already know, the top notetaking apps for NIX are Tomboy, BasKet Note Pads, KNotes, and Xpad.

I haven't taken a look at BasKet, but as far as I can tell, the other 3 don't have any sort of alarms.

I got Notezilla working under wine, and so far it seems to be running ok...alarms are going off and urls are opening when they should. The only problem I have with it so far is that drag & drop of notes on the desktop is kind of wonky. The bar on the top of the notes detach themselves when dragging, and you have to go short distances and wait for the rest of the note to catch up with the bar, otherwise you have to start all over again. Lucky for me I don't keep that many notes on the desktop and prefer to store most of my 500+ notes in the memoboards.

General Software Discussion / Sticky notes for Linux?
« Last post by app103 on June 29, 2011, 09:51 PM »
I would really like a sticky note app for Linux that is comparable to Notezilla on Windows.

Specifically, I'd like one where I can hide notes, arrange them on either multiple boards or in a tree, schedule repeating alarms (with snooze option), and the ability for them be scheduled to open urls.

Does anyone know of such an app?

Living Room / Re: We need some good tech news sites - Where are they?
« Last post by app103 on June 29, 2011, 09:47 AM »
I follow a lot of tech bloggers on Friendfeed, which not only gets me what they write, but also what they read & share. Discussions there can be pretty interesting, too.

The only real problem with that approach if all you want is tech news, is that they share personal stuff too...and there is no shortage of the stupid, silly, and tons of memes. You follow a tech blogger and you get posts about their kids, what they are listening to on last.fm, movies they are watching, and everything under the sun along with the tech stuff they share from Google Reader, through the bookmarklet, and autoposted from their own blogs.

It's kind of like Facebook without the apps, but a much more open community centered around sharing content found on the web and created by members.

The site is a firehose of information that flies by in real time.

Interesting idea.

I think if it was a free base app, providing basic functionality, with additional features provided via plugins, with a "plugin store" where you can sell the individual extra features, that might also fly. And if you open it up to other developers at some point, you could have a ton of additional features to offer, things you may never have thought of, and possibly giving other developers a chance at making a little money too.
