camtasia is a fantastic tool for full motion video tutorials.. it may not replace wink for the kind of slideshow stuff you do, but for showing real live stuff in action, it will save you a LOT of effort.

the tutorials are really nice.. gentle, encouraging, and clear.  great stuff.  i think i can see your future as a teacher. :)

i can only think of a couple of generic issues:
1) the fonts and font sizes can be a bit tricky to read on a big screen.. this isn't a big deal if the program you are using to make the sldies has other advantages and ways of displaying info, but it's something for you to consider if you are open to other tools.
2) tutorial length -- consider me one of those who thinks its better to err on the side of having short tutorials vs long ones.  tutorial 3 was fine length but i wouldn't hesitate making them even shorter, and certainly no longer.

again, really great stuff -- you are an excellent teacher.

ProcessTamer / Re: Won't start in system tray
« Last post by mouser on February 22, 2009, 06:06 PM »
never heard of this problem.. can you try deleting any process tamer entries from the start menu and confirming that PT does not start automatically when you boot.  then try running it manually and confirm it doesnt show config when it starts.  then if all that works, check the option saying to start with windows and see if that happens ok.

First thing i'm going to do is start using a local archiving tool for web pages, like Local Website Archive or Surfulater.  That will let me preserve copies of website articles even if the sites go offline.

That cartoon is so accurate it's scary.. People need to remember that encryption is only good against people who don't have physical access to you.

This is a confirmation that, while possible ill-timed to coincide with tax season, the DonationCoder 4 Year Anniversary fundraiser will take place in March 2009.

I need some more ideas for the fundraiser.. anyone got anything creative and fun in mind?

General Software Discussion / Firefox Extension: Link Extend
« Last post by mouser on February 21, 2009, 07:13 AM »
from ghacks which describes the value of this tool well:

If you are a cautious user on the Internet you might want to find out as much as possible about sites that you are going to visit before actually visiting them. The basic concept of Link Extend is to provide a wide range of information about a selected link. It queries more than 20 different web services and displays the results in an overlay on the same page. Results are divided into different categories like Safety, Kid Safe or Ethics.

Each web service rates the link that has been analyzed. This ranges from low risk to high risk websites in the Safety category, safe, suspicious or unsafe in the Kid Safe category or very good and very bad in the Ethics category. A total of eight different services are queried in the safety category including Site Advisor, Google Safe Browsing or Norton. The other two categories make use of three services each like WOT, Icra or Corporate Critic.

I just want to say, even though i don't think anyone else on the planet uses this, that after employing it to analyze data in a 10gb log file, that it is a great tool, and i'd like to thank myself for coding it.

« Last post by mouser on February 21, 2009, 04:50 AM »
ive thought about formal plugin api for sc, but this could 99% be accomplished with a standalone exe that supported drag and drop, and sc can already be configured to support commandline tools with file arguments in the Tools menu.

are you using red box region capture mode or the normal one? are you using the new sc beta with improved non-redbox region capture?  both modes can capture menus but the techniques are different.

Find And Run Robot / Re: URL encoding in aliases?
« Last post by mouser on February 20, 2009, 09:47 PM »
i improved the automatic handling, but had to go ahead and add the ability to use $$u1,$$u2, $$uc, etc. to explicitly request that an arguement be url encoded, so that an alias could mix and match.  will be in next release.

how about a 'roger beep' that makes you realize that Trout jumped to another file in the playlist? Maybe I'm the only one ever missing something like that, I don't know

great idea, i just asked for same thing from skwire when he pointed me to your request.

Can't believe how far trout has come.. damn this is good.
20620
if you can get it to reliably recur, what would be interesting would be to see if delay is much less if you first wake it up with a double click and THEN initiate a capture.. in other words, i wonder if it has something to do with a capture beginning before the program is actually "awake"

2. When eating ice cream from a bowl, I stir it to a paste before eating it. My favorite flavor is mint choc-chip.
try adding rice crispies cereal and a tiny bit of milk.  little trick i picked up in my youth while watching saturday morning cartoons.

4, 5 minutes
yeah that is very very not normal.
if you can reproduce it, could you tell me if it happens whether you do a full screen capture vs other capture modes.

jesper that is a very good idea, but i can do better and just automatically encode url strings; look for it in next release coming in the next few days.
