Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Mini-Review of Cropper

Very nice minireview
Seeing the Cropper context menu makes me think I really do need to add some more Send To features to Screenshot Captor.

Just making the donation is sufficient.
If you want you can give out your donation credits to specific people on the site or to the general site account - that's still supporting the site and so it counts towards fundraiser money.  Many people never bother with the donationcredits system, and that money eventually just filters into the site account over time, so that's fine too.

Does anyone want to try to make an attractive looking mini button on banner that people could put on their websites or blogs that would show their support of DC and maybe encourage others to visit and donate?

Some starting points:

Living Room / Re: Idea to get more NANY participators...
« Last post by mouser on March 02, 2009, 07:13 AM »
i'd really really rather not ever put ads on the site.  let's see how well the fundraiser and hope that it never comes to that.

Crush, i take it what you meant to say was, paraphrasing:
"Why dont we put ads on the site so we can raise more money so that we will have more money to give as prizes in our programming challenges"

But I've come to the conclusion that a site like ours shouldn't focus on giving big prizes.. we can let the big corporations drowning in money do that.. We'll keep things here much more friendly and less mercenary.. Those who want to participate will do so out of pride and enjoyment, and the pleasure of getting one of the rare and magical Cody mugs.

No but i might give you a smart alec award.

I did that on purpose, to see who was paying attention.  :-[

that's pretty clever.

hehehehe you know this was reported by people who thought it was spam.

i looked at it, knew longrun wouldnt put spam in his signature, but i removed it after the report, in confusion as i didnt get the joke and didnt know what it was doing there. i guess i am getting a little too fast to pull the trigger against supsected spammers!

only now did i actually pay attention to what i was reading and laughed.
[for those who are dim like me -- the prostrate is something you do not want to enlarge!]

pretty clever actually.  ;D

It's been over two years since we last had a fundraiser for the site, and so we're long overdue..  It's time for the..

First of all let me say to everyone who has participated on the site over the last 4 years, that it's been my real pleasure and honor to meet and talk to all of you.  This website has been the highlight of my life during that time.  I don't expect everyone to feel that way, but I hope you at least feel like the site has brightened your day a little, once or twice.

It's never easy asking for money (that's why I've avoided running a fundraiser for 2 years), but that time has come where we need to raise some extra cash to help pay for our hosting costs and other expenses, and to help fund future projects.

Donations to the site from ordinary people have made all the difference in the world.  They have made it possible for this site to remain advertisement free and pay for a now pretty heavy duty pair of web servers that run us almost $6000 a year in hosting costs.

Thinking back to the early days of the site when we were running off a $20/month shared hosting plan brings a real smile to my face.  We are currently serving about 30gb of traffic and a million hits each and every day.  I think that's pretty remarkable.

It was money from donations that made it possible for us to send dozens of mugs and shirts out as rewards for people who participated in the last freeware programming challenge we had.  It's true we can't afford to send out giant monetary prizes like the big companies do, but we are proud of what we do, and proud of where our money comes from.  For me personally, the donations make it possible for me to spend more time working on the website and software for the site, and interacting with users; and I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing.

Most of all, donations have made it possible for this site to stay true to itself, and have made being part of the site something I think everyone involved in can be proud of and feel good about.

If you've already donated to the site and are not in a position to donate again -- don't think twice about it, we're grateful for your support.

But if you've not yet donated, or can spare a little more, permit me, on behalf of site, to ask you to take the trouble to make a donation now.  I can promise you that we will put it to good use as we work hard to make this site even better in the coming year.

-mouser (jesse)

ps.
Cody (our bird/duck mascot) has insisted I tell people that if they cannot make monetary donations, he would be happy to receive chocolate coins in gold foil wrappers, or else hand drawn pictures of himself to hang on his wall.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR for multiple users over network?
« Last post by mouser on March 01, 2009, 07:23 PM »
This is a good question.. Actually another user recently convinced me to add a feature which he uses to share some farr alias configurations over a network, and i hope he'll post how he uses it for this.

Keep in mind though that FARR is not really set up to used shared configuration files over a network, so general settings are not going to be easy to share automatically.  But i'd be open to adding features to FARR that would make sharing certain information easier.
20515
all fair points, d4ni.
20516
This is actually a really good question.

In FARR you can build lists of files inside aliases so they are always easy to find by typing the alias (keyword) name. [note you can easily add files to an alias group by right clicking on a result or opening alias and dropping files into it]

But this isn't a perfect solution to cases where you'd like to have multiple tags per file, etc.

I could pretty easily add feature that let you combine aliases as tags by doing +aliasname so that would get you part of the way there.

The desktop search tools aren't going to really help you much with this.  As you've stated clear, you really need a tool that lets you put tags on files.

Perhaps what we really need is a proper system for integrating FARR with a general purpose file "tagger" tool.  If someone finds a free file tagging tool that might be interfaced to FARR let us know.  Alternatively

This idea came up many years ago on the forum.. and i still think it sounds like a good idea to me..  maybe it could be implemented using a firefox extension on the client and a very small daemon on the remote computer that is just allowed to launch certain allowed commandline executables with the passed url (such executables could include standalone downloader tools, etc).
20518
You may be the first person actually using any other script language for Fscript besides javascript, and i'd LOVE to see this working.. so i hope ecaradec (FScript author) will check out this thread and help diagnose.  Please don't give up!

sure is beautiful looking.

Well you say in your post:
Just one other thing I would have folks do, if you are willing.
Place a reply here letting VIP know that you like Circledock, and what it does for you.

But thats just one line in a large post with pictures so i suspect most people may miss it.
