Living Room / UK pc con (sorry, i mean repair) man captured for TV show
« Last post by nudone on May 20, 2007, 06:32 AM »
Uk members may have seen this already - from an ITV show called 'House of Horrors'.

the show aims to expose dodgy service people by enticing them into a realistic looking set up where everything is captured on film.

i've been waiting for the clips to appear on youtube and now here they are:

part 1: http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=8DsAwt8vf6Q

part 2: http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=BOrHS50Xkqs

look out for the car he drives - particularly what happens to it as he makes his escape - and look at the license plate, what a classic.

very true.

sadly the person this reminds me of has had a computer for a few years now BUT...

them: "do i right click?"

me: "no, just left click - left click is what you do normally isn't it."

them a few minutes later: "is that a right click?"

me: "no, just left click - just left click on everything."

around and around we go...

ps it would be nice to find a handwriting font for the quotes.

i think the font used at the moment looks about right as the quotes are coming from irc chat sessions.

i agree that handwriting would be good for none irc text quotes.

Apologies - didn't realise that Sygate was a synonym for Symantec.
dont believe it is - I think that post of nudones wasn't referring to yours

tomos is correct. i had simply forgotten which firewalls were which and what i had already tried before.

perhaps something that no one has tried is this...

i'm now using the firewall that is built into NetLimiter 2 Pro http://www.netlimiter.com/

no complaints so far. it pretty much does what you'd expect, i.e. prompts you if something can access the net or not.

(i didn't put zone alarm back on because it wouldn't let me. i would have put the free version of outpost v1 on instead but that won't install either. until i completely reinstall everything on this machine i'm content with how things are.)

i have to say i don't really have any complaints about google either. when looking through the results it returns, i will often view them way past page 10 - past page 50 if need be. like superboyac said, you can pretty much spot what looks like a relevent link so it doesn't take that long to go through a load results. and, of course, usually you'll find a site that will provide further links that are even more relevent to your original search. i think it's called web surfing.

google still seems to be the best out of the bunch. it will be interesting to hear how app get along with copernic.
2061
how about something like copernic. it returns a set of results by combining the results from several search engines.

the idea being that we assume that most search engines will be favouring their own add infected web sites in the results. the copernic like program does the filtering, cross referencing the results - similar matches found high ranked across all of the search engine results are considered genuine good finds. this then removes the bias of any particular search engine - assuming they have their own set of advertisers that distinct from each other.

i just say this as i assume that the other search engines are working in a similar way to google and bias their results to favour their advertisers. maybe it's only google doing that - i have absolutely no idea what other search engine companies are doing.

wouldn't this work?

Living Room / Re: Best Buy Geek Squad Confession (long and interesting)
« Last post by nudone on May 03, 2007, 02:37 AM »
there are several large companies in the UK that are, or will be, implementing a similar service to the Geek Squad - one is even using the 'official' Geek Squad in their branding.

I was amazed to see the high prices they are quoting for a repair job (some do actually offer a no fix no fee solution).

I hope that they are all going to offer such a terrible service as mentioned in the quote above - that way the 'hobos with a thumbdrive' will still be a necessity.

General Software Discussion / Re: Outsourcing web design
« Last post by nudone on April 30, 2007, 04:13 AM »
i've been looking at some of the examples provided by the services above.

many of them look like templates found at 'template' sites. i guess this is just the way things look nowadays. i wonder if it's worth considering going straight for a ready made template, i.e. if the customers are happy with sites that look almost identical to a template even though it is an original design, then why not just give them a template design.

i personally wouldn't go the template way but it seems odd that everyone is aspiring to look exactly like a template layout. i suppose that demonstrates the quality of the templates now available - they are actually a lot better in appearance than many 'original' designs.

ampa's original question of "Why on earth would I code my own design if I can truly outsource it so cheaply?" appears to be being ignored.

it's not about the threat of losing business to these online conversion services. it's more a question of what is the quality of the product they return, i.e. why waste your own valuable time creating the page when someone will do a perfect job and for less than you would charge yourself. the key word being to "outsource".

madness.

actually, i'd like to see the statistics for success rate. i imagine it's not that bad, i mean what's more difficult: me learning to do a 360 kick-flip or getting a ping-pong ball to land in a cup - i think the ball in the cup is going to happen first.

i hope it grows into a new sport. whoever the guy is doing it, i salute him.

i didn't get too far with 'auto mailer' nor 'mailsend' but i did get 'bmail' working as it it seems the easiest to use.

find it here: http://www.beyondlog...mail/cmdlinemail.htm

thanks to nosh for suggesting the command line idea.

i've totally given up trying to figure out why it does it - and it really doesn't do it enough for me to be too concerned. i'd just like to know that it's done it - it's so infrequent it's not a major issue.

but i'll check out your suggestion.

General Software Discussion / auto send an email after system start
« Last post by nudone on April 08, 2007, 12:35 PM »
my machine tends to behave at the moment but i sometimes leave it running whilst i'm out or away from it - and then i return to find that the machine rebooted itself for no good reason.

i've given up trying to find out why it does this, instead i'd like to simply know WHEN it does this.

so, can anyone recommend a small email kind of app that will automatically send a predefined email to a preset address after my machine has booted up.

this way, i can be informed that my machine has restarted by sending an auto email to an account i have that then forwards things to my mobile/cell phone (i don't have one of those fancy mobile/cell phones with it's own email account).

i'm sure there must be something out there and yet i can't find anything.

i'd prefer to avoid using something that has to use outlook or some other email program to send the email.
