Like Windows' users, when Apple fails its flock, they revolt. Many of them are tired of being early adopters, feeling shortchanged lately.

General Software Discussion / Leopard is the New Vista, and It's Pissing Me Off
« Last post by zridling on November 30, 2007, 04:10 AM »
Oliver Rist brings us the latest crank on Leopard not being as rock-solid as Tiger. Been there, done that, although the comparison brings out some good things about Vista you may have overlooked. Leopard is the new Vista. All the way. And here are five examples.

  • Vista Similarity 1: Wait for a Service Pack — Perpetually
  • Vista Similarity 2: Needless Graphics Glitz
  • Vista Similarity 3: Pointless User Interface "Fixes"
  • Vista Similarity 4: Nuked Networking
  • Vista Similarity 5: Bundled Apps as New Features That Suck

apple-mac-os-x105-leopard.jpg

Okay, I probably had a little too much coffee this morning, but Leopard really is just one big popped balloon of disappointment. Let's get it straight, however: I'm not any more against Leopard than I am against Vista. Both of them got too much wrong. I'll close with a little tidbit for that pudgy PC guy in the Apple commercials who's so sad because his users are "downgrading" to XP. Well, maybe they are — I know I did. But I'm writing this on an XP workstation right now because my Mac is busy reinstalling Tiger. Leopard can keep its glitzy crash-prone spots. I'll stick with the OS that really "just works" — for now.

It's never a good idea to insult your potential customers, but given my own year-long bad Vista experience, I find them amusing. The "downgrade back to XP" one especially ("Where by 'downgrade' he means upgrade to an older, more stable version.") I don't think these commercials are working, but the shortcomings of Vista occurred to create a perfect storm against the Windows platform:

 — UAC gets turned off
 — Poor driver support
 — Slower, requiring faster hardware
 — Vista's EULA compared to OS X's (where "every version is the ultimate") or change your hardware, buy another copy of Vista!
 — DRM; Trusted Computing; WGA
 — MS-OOXML and Office 2007; OGA

All this came at a time when both Apple and Linux were putting out the best versions of their OS software in years. It's a practical fact that what Intel giveth, Microsoft taketh away — I just wanted a faster computer that was more reliable. Instead I was handed the utter mess that is Vista Explorer, and my brand new expensive, superfast computer ran slower with Vista than my 5-year old machine ran XP! And for that fact alone, I call bullshit on Microsoft.

It's no mistake that Wal-Mart just sold 200,000 $200 gOS Linux machines in two weeks. People will always take value. I can't stand Apple, but trust me, I've seen more than a dozen people I know personally switch to it in the past year, and this includes two IT admins!! And all of them were Windows users. So it's safe to say that virtually every new Apple user is a former Windows user.

What Ralf said. I'm an impulsive donator, i.e., if I have it, I give it, if not, it means I'm broke. But a simple appeal such as:

If you missed our holiday fundraiser in December, April is great time to catch up!

Also, I pledge a percentage of my lottery winnings to DC (if I ever win the damn thing). Maybe start a "DC Trust Fund" where mouser could compute from his favorite beach someday.

[MrCrispy] I find it funny and ironic that the Linux folk spend so much time and energy trying to look like Windows.

I did the same downgrade mrcrispy, despite having another Vista installation in the house. XP-SP3 will increase your speed another 10%. I built a new 64-bit machine earlier this year, slapped Vista x64 on it and have had 3rd party driver problems from the start. I still have a brand new printer packed in a box for lack of a Vista driver. However, if you'd like to keep the Vista UI for your XP, check out these 5 Tools to Make Windows XP Look Like Vista.

General Software Discussion / How to: Pimp your Ubuntu!

[via nixCraft]:
This guide will let you pimp Ubuntu Linux to look like Windows Vista or Mac OS X Leopard, or a blend of both.

ubuntu1201a.jpg

From the article by Dark Star:
Changes are part of Nature so as with Technology, though this cannot be true for Windows and Mac cause the life cycle of a single Version is too much which is not the case with Linux. Open Source evolves at a rapid rate and with evolution comes unique changes. Today with a hike in Linux acceptance its pretty hard for competitors to provide similar solutions at free of cost… I have tried to kept the guide as simple as I can so that even a newbie can understand how to make changes. There are few major changes in Ubuntu Themes and Icon Control Panel. So please read carefully.

Also, I attribute it to mouser and the original DC bloggers, and members like Carol Haynes, who set a open-minded, informed, and relaxed tone for the forum. I feel free to talk about anything and everything and when someone corrects me, I'm grateful. Hell, you guys even tolerate my Linux posts!

Carol, you never lack taste or class! Like Darwin, I didn't know how to respond, except to say it looks like something a 14-year old would be impressed with. There are other incarnations, and the one I like better keeps all windows rolled up until you scroll over them. That gets to be convenient very quickly because your desktop is always in view and you have access to any part of it at any time (notice the lack of a taskbar on the screenshot above).

General Software Discussion / Re: Maybe Vista doesn't suck?
« Last post by zridling on November 19, 2007, 04:21 AM »
I never thought of it that way, Ralf. At some point, you do have to get it out the door. By working so long on Vista, it created another level of complexity as they couldn't keep up with changes that were going on around them — hardware vendors were moving on to 64-bit, Web 2.0 was advancing by the day, and backward compatibility was just overwhelming.

Ironic that the greatest advantage of the Windows platform has become its greatest weakness. I think some of this could have been cured if Microsoft would have only sold Vista in 64-bit versions, which would have forced anyone who wanted it to [effectively] buy a new system to run it.

Lanux, I'd recommend the widescreen option, if for no other reason, their falling prices. 22" is cool, 24" is great if you can afford it. Just remember to bring a big videocard to the party.

Another thing we might do is "seed" such a fundraiser by having many of our members post in a "blog/forum blizzard"; DIGG the heck out of everything for a week while continuing to share new content here.

For example:
— If you're sitting on a mini-review in your mind that you'd like to write, post it!
— When you see a great idea or some story catches your attention, link to it and let's discuss it here.
— Also, let's revisit some of the cool software provided by DonationCoder.com — hell, it's everywhere!

Then post a fundraiser and share the love.

Great find, tinjaw. Here's the line that is true to my experience this past year:

...eventually you begin to loathe and fear the upgrade process.

Look at Apple's recent Leopard release. It was immediately hailed as a Vista-killer, and then people starting using it and quickly found a dozen problems, among them very serious ones. Look at Vista. No more need be said. CorelDRAW was one of my favs and I stuck with it for 10 versions! until they simply made it impossible to install without the damn thing taking over your system. And it's slower than Photoshop now.

I also hate to see a great, fast program be feature-bloated by bitchy forum users. I've seen it happen over and over and over. Some guy writes in and makes it his mission in life that his FTP program has a spellchecker — huh?!! Donald Lessau of XYplorer does a great job of cutting these type of requests down fast. If such requests fit within his roadmap for the program, he schedules it for an upgrade. Otherwise, he explains why he doesn't want to do that.

As Falstaff taught us, discretion is the better part of valor!

I'm no Apple fan by any measure, but I give them credit for fixing Time Machine quickly. Still, it's a shame that almost all new versions of major software are betas. Doesn't anyone test this crap before they release it anymore?!!

General Software Discussion / Darik's Boot and Nuke
« Last post by zridling on November 18, 2007, 10:03 PM »
[via Leo Laporte]:

Darik's Boot and Nuke
Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot floppy, USB, CD/DVD that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction. DBAN is a means of ensuring due diligence in computer recycling, a way of preventing identity theft if you want to sell a computer, and a good way to totally clean a Microsoft Windows installation of viruses and spyware. DBAN prevents or thoroughly hinders all known techniques of hard disk forensic analysis.

It's free and works on Linux, Mac, and Windows.

Living Room / Laptop or Desktop — which are you?
« Last post by zridling on November 17, 2007, 12:13 AM »
I'm curious to find out what percentage of DC-ers are laptop users. I'm a desktop guy because that fits my fat, sedentary, hermetic, chocolate-addicted lifestyle. But since moving over to Linux, I've noticed that everyone — almost — has laptop hardware compatibility (in the form of drivers) and connectivity (usually wi-fi) at the top of their priority list. That's understandable, but if a distro doesn't have wi-fi, it really goes nowhere I've noticed.

ibm-pc-convertible.jpg  ibm_pc1.jpg

So here's my follow-up question: If you answered 'Laptop user' above, please tell us why you prefer it over a desktop machine. Thanks!
