Site/Forum Features / Re: Dc Member Blog Idea - Feedback Requested
« Last post by mouser on March 04, 2009, 04:31 AM »
Merging it with main site blog, pros and cons:

Pros:
  • By combining content the result is a more active blog
  • We could probably use some additional editorial content in main blog
  • One less site for people to have to remember to visit

Cons:
  • The current dc blog is homemade (not wordpress, etc.) and is set up for a specific funcitonality -- promoting forum posts to blogs; it would not be easy to combine the two.
  • Too much content too quickly? the Dc blog typically has multiple posts per day, would it drown out member blogging?
  • Worries about content? DC blog is the official blog of the site so i have some concern over what goes up there -- wheras the member blog should be for whatever the members decide they want.

Site/Forum Features / Dc Member Blog Idea - Feedback Requested
« Last post by mouser on March 04, 2009, 03:46 AM »
I had an idea.. I'd like to set up a blog where some dc members can take turns posting.

programminglanguages.gif

We used to have daily columns here on dc in the old days -- basically a blog where 5 people would write some blog essay each on their different assigned weekday.  it was a bit hard to keep it active and we eventually stopped.

But i think we should try to do it again, but a little less regimented and more flexible, and more of a group thing.

So here is the idea:
  • The blog would be set up at http://blog.dcmembers.com , it will use Wordpress
  • DC members who have web space on the dc member server, or forum members who think they have something to contribute will be given a posting account
  • The goal will be to have a consistent regular flow of new content -- one post a day at least.
  • But who posts when and on what material will be left totally up those of you who participate
  • Dc forum members who feel like they would like to participate just contact me
  • We will link to it from the donationcoder.com blog and web pages so hopefully it will get some readership

The idea will be to have an interesting blog tht is updated daily -- the workload being shared by all the different writers.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Volunteers?

Living Room / The Greatest Graphic Novel of All Time: Watchmen
« Last post by mouser on March 03, 2009, 09:24 PM »
Growing up i was, like many kids, a comic book reader.  My friend zack and I used to walk up broadway to "Forbidden Planet" a great comic book store in new york, and hunt for comics for hours.  My tastes were pretty mainstream, I collected the X-men mainly, but i also loved Cerebus the Aardvark with its unbelievable background art, and the strange Tales of the Beanworld.  And my father had a very old Superman compendium and some shazaam comics that were magical.

But sometime in high school i lost all interest in comics.  I would still go into a comic book store occasionally to see if i could rekindle some interest, but it never happened.

Then a few years ago zack suggested a graphic novel (basically a long book-sized comic book) to me, I *think* it was Kingdom Come, which revisited some of the comic book heroes i had read growing up.  That was a huge eye opener -- it tapped into all of the deep seated memories and emotional attachment i had to the comic universe, but somehow made it interesting and accessible again.

Now we come to Watchmen, which completely blew my mind.  This is a tale of comic book heros from an adult perspective.. Just a remarkable achievement.

I don't know if someone who never read comic books as a kid will get much out of these high quality graphic novels, but if you used to read comic books as a kid, but lost interest in them, I cannot recommend Watchmen more strongly.

As you might guess, what's motivated me to make this post is the impending release this week of the Watchmen movie.  I have no idea if it will be good or not but you can get the graphic novel on amazon for $11.

here's another piece of data for you:  mine got so bad that i turned off all standby and screensaver functions so the monitor would never go dark.  that seemed to work for a while until a reboot, afterwhich one of the monitors never work up.

be prepared -- that monitor of yours *is* going to stop working pretty soon.

If I leave it turned off, or in standby mode for longer than like 10 or 15 minutes than try to turn it on, it wont for a while. All that happens is the light blinks for about 1 to 2 minutes, and then the monitor turns on and displays what is on the screen...
Am I fixing to loose my second monitor ?

if you're experience is anything like mine, then *yes*.

i had exactly these symptoms on two samsung lcds.. eventually they progressed to worse stages, where they would never get very bright, and then eventually stopped turning on completely.

i must have broken it in the latest update -- i can confirm it happens to me too.
working on it now.

I've posted a silent update, so if you redownload or run updater and force it to redownload, you should have the fix.
Going to try to correct one more bug (hidden system tray icon) before i publish the new version.

That is combine the results from the .txt (placed first in the results) AND the results from a FARR search (placed last).

someone could make an fsubscript plugin to do this very easily i think.

It just makes my menu longer than it needs to be so I'd like to get rid of it if that's possible.
i actually added it for that exact reason -- i noticed that occasionally the taskbar would jump on top of the menu, hiding the last row.. so that extra bottom row was my cheat to prevent that from causing any trouble.

but your idea is perfect -- i'll make it an option.

First of all, you donated in the past.  That already puts you in the .0001% of rare special wonderful people who have taken the time and made an effort to support this site.

Second of all, the whole point of this site is to not make anyone feel guilty or like a second class citizen if they can't afford to donate.

So really the only thing to say to you is thank you for being a part of the site and we are glad to have you.

Dear lord.. this is real.  Personally i think this planet is not good enough to deserve the people who have what it takes to create stuff like this.

Just to *assemble* it before you can play with it:
The puzzle has 975 individual parts.
Each face has 101 stickers, making a total of 1212 stickers.
20 hours on masters and molds.
12 hours casting parts.
30 hours cleaning up parts and sanding (!!)
7 hours assembling all 975 parts
6 hours stickering.

Creator of the puzzle originally posted the designs and discussion here: http://twistypuzzles...0&hilit=petaminx

I didn't notice until now that vmware supports simulating a multimonitor environment (even on a pc with one monitor) -- this could be very useful for people wanting to test multimon setups.

Twitpay is a new site that let's you send small amounts of money to other people very quickly and easily using twitter.

It seems like a nice idea with a clever implementation, and most of all they've focused on making it EASY to gift money; as I've written about before, I really think that is the key to making this kind of approach succeed.

As fellow travelers in the very small circle of sites that are dependent on micropayments, I think we should be supportive of efforts like this, and wish them the best success.  Any time it becomes easier for normal people to fund each other through small donations, I think the entire community benefits.

Today, we’re taking Twitpay out of beta and putting it out there for everyone to use.
As we’ve thought about what’s important about social payments, a few things stayed in the front of our minds: they have to be really easy, and they have to be secure. We got the easy part down on Day 1: just tweet the money and it goes! If you haven’t used Twitpay yet, here’s how it works:
  • 1. Post a tweet like  ”@ev twitpay $1 because Twitter is awesome”
  • 2. There’s no Step 2!

Also check out the twitpay blog (interesting reading): http://blog.twitpay.me/

those of you that follow our forum carefully may remember that we had a bit of a shock when we saw the original twitpay mascot, which was a bird carrying a coin in his beak -- the same symbol as our mascot Cody (well he doesn't have a coin in his beak on the site banner now because of the fundraiser); but after some discussions with twitpay they decided to give their bird a bag of money instead of a coin, and now our mascots are good friends -- except that i'm afraid our Cody may get a bit jelous about Mr. Money Wings' newfound wealth.
