SSC is now taking a heck of a long time to complete a capture if I haven't used it for a while. After that it is quick enough. But let it sit and it can take 4, 5 minutes. Even then it stays red sometimes and never does signify the capture is complete unless I manually open the main window. Weird behavior.
-J-Mac

After talking with J-Mac I think we've identified the cause of the problem to be the fact that he had many hundreds of screenshots in the Screenshot directory.. While i will work on removing the slowdown that occurs with so many screenshots, people might consider moving screenshots out of their main root Screenshots directory after a while.

The new MoveTo menu items are designed to help you do that regularly and painlessly.

Before anyone gets too excited by speed of growing thermometer.. i should point out that it's probably about to slow down substantially because the newsletter call for help has now gone out and been distributed, and that was our main way of reaching people who might be sympathetic to donating.

I know such a program must exist but don't know of any (especially freeware) to recommend; hope that someone will post some good suggestions.

You can install right over the old copy, all your settings and license key will be preserved.
Don't get me wrong you should be able to do what you want without that message being captured on the screen, so let me know if it still happens.  but do yourself a favor and use the hotkeys, once you get in the habit it makes life so much easier.

I hope you like the new MoveTo menu items.. i think they really help you to keep your screenshots directory organized/archived.

two things:
  • first, you must be using an old version by the look of the settings dialog.
  • second, and more importantly, the easiest solution is to use the hotkey keyboard shortcut to initiate the capture instead of the menu; if you look at the menu the next time it tells you what hotkey keyboard shortcuts you can use directly.  this also has the advantage of being much more efficient in terms of your time.

Well I made my big infusion in February, so I can't commit more at the moment
one thing that has come up in discussions is the idea of offering something special to people who donate during the fundraiser that they wouldn't be entitled to if they donated before the fundraiser.  while that might be a way to get more donations, it seems completely unfair and illogical to me, and we haven't ever done something like that.  any donation that occurred prior to the fundraiser is at least as valuable if not more so than a donation now, so thank you!

second -- there is very little anyone can do to help this site more than just letting people know about the site when appropriate.  because we dont have pr and marketing departments like big companies, it's really only by things like this that people find out about our programs, and they would often get overlooked if not for this.  so thank you again, and thanks to everyone who ever makes a comment on blog post or software review pointing out when someone has overlooked a dc program that should have been included. [though please never be obnoxious or post about a program on dc that you don't personally use and like -- let it never be said that we encourage that kind of thing]

Added a minor beta update so people could test new sorting functionality and some new cool MoveTo menu items:
v2.48.01 - March 6th, 2009
  • Added new "Move To" menu item which will create a folder based on current date and move all screenshots into it; useful for quick organizing of screenshot folder.
  • Added new "Move To" menu for moving only old files and sorting into subfolders based on date of screenshot; userful for cleaning up a big directory of screenshots.
  • Added sort by -> name option in View menu.

Note:
there will be more updates in the coming weeks so no need to download this beta unless you are really anxious to try it.

thank you for reminding me -- as you say i'm trying to do a marathon of updates so this might be a good time to add this.

I was really hoping someone would post some possible solutions!!
That's how we like to do things here -- post a problem and someone always seems smart enough and nice enough to come share a solution.  :-* :-* :-*
Thank you Ramirez.

Anyone else with a dead lcd care to try this and let us know how it goes?

C# / Re: Some nice C# tutorials by dc member kyrathaba

i think your way is much more helpful.. as long as you are willing to go through the effort.  from my standpoint the real advantage of voice is you can just record a movie and narrate it as you go and get it done a lot quicker.  with your approach it has to take a lot longer for you to build the tutorial -- but i think it makes it easier to follow.

people please remember to send a few credits to the author of a program if you want to support their work and say thank you; just click the gold coin under their name.

Great stuff... the format combining static text and images with full motion video is excellent.
I love the scope of this one too, very gentle intro.

Of course another way the coders who hang out at dc could help a *lot* would be to release some new programs or updates to existing programs this month.
20395
I'm trying to think of some additional things we can do during this fundraiser month.

One thing of course is to work on updating software on the site, but that's not really anything special.

I think something that might be helpful to the site would be to ask everyone to participate in a little survey so we can get a feel for what parts of the site people think we should focus on, and get some suggestions about ways to improve, etc.  That would be a way people could help.

Any other ideas?

Living Room / What's your favorite food snack?
« Last post by mouser on March 06, 2009, 05:55 AM »
I'm really curious to discover some new unusual snacks.

I'll start out with one that i recently rediscovered:

Joray's fruit rolls:
We used to eat these as kids and as much as i've searched i've never found another brand that was edible compared to these; made in brooklyn, super thinly rolled, with plenty of artificial colors and flavors.  They may not be organic but they are far superior to the competition.

If you've been living in fear of opening any suspicious PDF files since we let you know about a still-unpatched bug in Adobe Acrobat that could expose your PC to a malware infection, we've got some bad news for you: it turns out that, due to how the bug is integrated into the software, it's possible for malware authors to still get into your system, even if you never actually open an infected file.

The bug affects only Windows computers running Acrobat version 7 or later. Because the program doesn't correctly read PDF files containing a certain type of compressed image, a specially-crafted PDF can at once crash Acrobat and inject its own code into the system, beginning a malware installation. Even though this bug's been public knowledge for weeks, and exploits are already out taking advantage of it, Adobe has been delaying its release of a patch to fix it, scheduled to be available on the 11th.

uh oh, target is making a run at taking Chris's pun medal.

Edvard are you finding these pictures or creating them??  They are just too good for you to be inventing them all.

ps. for those who don't get the lime and coconut reference, it's from a song.
