Living Room / Create Animated Gif Typewriter Effect for your Text Online
« Last post by mouser on March 15, 2009, 09:36 AM »
Here's a cool free online image generator that could be useful..
It creates an animated gif image that shows a series of text lines being typed and scrolled.. A simple but effective typewriter effect.

General Software Discussion / Re: Heuristic Antivirus
« Last post by mouser on March 15, 2009, 09:01 AM »
Don't have an answer for your question but I'd be interested in any technical writeups you find on heuristic antivirus scanning.. Personally I am really mad at the way antivirus companies handle heuristic reporting..

That is, what they SHOULD do when they find a file that triggers some heuristic flag is perhaps make a report saying that a file was found that is probably ok but triggered a heuristic alert and explain exactly what in the file triggered the alert.

Instead what they do is report it to the user as if a known virus was found with high confidence.

This results in tons of false positives, scaring users and causing harm to company reputations.

this is a case where it would be nice to interface some effects programs to screenshot captor -- but i dont think it makes sense to start building in every possible effect into the main program.
20254
Just to clarify -- screenshot captor can already capture scrolling windows -- the new idea is a function to manually let you specify target size of a window which would be resized programatically and then captured and returned to original size.

Who made the drawings for the banner?

Nick Pearson (Nudone) is the brilliant artist who created Cody our mascot, and made so many amazing illustrations of him.  Nick also runs several other beautiful sites, most notably www.CodexTransportica.com.

UrlSnooper / Re: Cant find wireless network adapter!!
« Last post by mouser on March 14, 2009, 01:15 PM »
I'm afraid i can't be of much help -- URL Snooper depends on the WinPCap network driver to detect the network card.

The only thing i can tell you to do is check out that winpcap page and see if you can find some info about the issue.

That's totally ridiculous if they banned you from the forum.. maybe you just triggered something that prevents one user from posting too many posts on the day they sign up, to prevent spammers?

I often get requests from people outside the US who can't use paypal.. there are 3 shareware payment services we support that i think should cover these people, but id be more interested in adding new payment services which specialize in international donors.

Site/Forum Features / Amazon Web Payment Service Added to payment page
« Last post by mouser on March 13, 2009, 05:45 PM »
I spent the better part of this afternoon adding Amazon Web Payments to the methods you can submit payments to the DC site.

My throat is sore from all the yelling and cursing I did at the computer screen.. It is a holy nightmare navigating the amazon.com web payment system website -- there are about 50 different logins for different aspects of different facets of their different payment services.. it's a total rats nest and one of the most convoluted and chaotic payment systems i have ever seen.  I had a hard time believing how badly organized it was.  That's being generous.  Really really horribly done.  For a company that got things so right with their normal site checkout, the developer side of things here is a total unmitigated failure.

Anyway..

It works, and it's up now.  I had to set a fixed amount for the amazon payment button and for the fundraiser i chose a large value ($50) but i put alternative buttons on the alternative payment page ($10, $25, $50, $100).  Maybe i'll lower the main button after the fundraiser.

It looks like the amazon web payment system makes payment really easy for users if they already have an amazon.com account, and it charges less of a fee than paypal, so that's all good.  If the payer doesn't have an amazon.com account however, it looks like it's going to make them set one up before letting the proceed to make a payment, which is pretty annoying.  In that respect paypal is still *much* better, as it lets people just fill in credit card info quickly for a one time payment.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Early use of LaunchBar Commander
« Last post by mouser on March 13, 2009, 09:00 AM »
allow me to ask a few questions:

First, let me make sure i understand the basic idea of what you want to do:
  • You want to be able to create multiple launch/dockingbars and use them for different purposes.
  • You want to launch the program and tell it which launch/dockingbar to show through a commandline option.
  • Is that right?

As you probably have discovered, LBC is quite good at letting you create multiple docks and store them in different files.

I can't remember if i added commandline support to tell LBC with dock to load and open, but i could add that easily and that would do 99% of what i think you are asking for.

Here is the part that is a bit more troublesome:
Do you want to sometimes have more than 1 of your docks running at the same time?  In this case, things get a little more complicated because it's not clear if the best thing is to open multiple copies of the LBC program or figure out a way through the commandline to tell an existing LBC process to load an additional file.. It could get messy.

And an alternative possibility:
Would you be happy with a solution that let you more easily load LBC on windows startup and then easily SWITCH (or TOGGLE) different bars through the LBC right click menu or hotkey?
