Living Room / Re: Be careful with your credit cards!
« Last post by Carol Haynes on February 15, 2010, 05:11 PM »
The banks will not do anything if you paid via credit card, but will reverse the payment if you use Direct Debit.

Actually in the UK the banks should respond to both claims as credit cards purchases are covered by the Consumer Credit Act.

The problem I encountered was the the bank insisted I get the magazine to confirm that they charged me the wrong amount. This seems an unlikely scenario to be acheivable and they wouldn't accept a copy of the order form I submitted as proof of price.

After arguing and insisting on speaking to a supervisor I got the bank to refund the difference on a temporary basis whilst they request further information from the magazine. I also contacted the magazine subscriptions department.

Strangley the subscription department never responded to my request but they did refund the overcharged amount to my credit card without further comment (about 6 weeks later). They obviously never responded to the bank requests either because the temporary refund the bank made has never been recinded so ironically I ended up with a double refund.

It still didn't really compensate for the bad feeling about future renewals via credit card (next time if I renew with an offer I will simply send a UK cheque for the amount specified) and it certainly doesn't compensate for the hassles, time and effort involved trying to convince a difficult credit card company and an uncommunicative subscription department.

I looked up the show, but still can't think of a thing to say.

You could try "Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once".

If she hasn't got a good singing voice how about "pass me the cheese"?

Any idea where BC is now? All seems to have gone quiet in this section.

Or has he gone overseas on a covert operation?

Living Room / Re: HTML...In Britsh?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on January 31, 2010, 09:10 AM »
the computer was invented in Germany

Only if you mean calculating machines. The first 'modern' all-purpose computer was built during World War II at Bletchley Park in the UK to crack German enigma codes. It was called Colossus and was built by the British Post Office Electronics engineer Tommy Flowers.

The first genuinely theoretical computer scientist was Alan Turing (who also worked at Bletchely Park).

See:

http://www.bletchley...ontent/machines.rhtm

and

http://www.alanturin...BriefHistofComp.html

(see the Universal Turing Machine a little way down the page).

Back on topic ...

I can't see why it would be impossible to have synonyms in HTML so that both color and colour are equivalent. That way people who learn English can use HTML without irritation and the Americans can carry on getting it wrong!

Just a few observations from the other side:

Whilst I agree with the premise that the support sucked I can't see it was really a problem that their support would be able to deal with given that it was an interaction with another piece of beta software that the user has installed and intercepts key strokes.

This is a pretty unusual situation and not one that RoboForm should be able to troubleshoot easily and they did follow it up with a 'human' response.

Maybe the developer of "beta of Spell Catcher Plus" should be informed that the product should not work on passwords!! That's where the problem actually arose so why blame RoboForm.

Finally one of the things I learnt a long time ago is that if you use beta software expect problems - and when troubleshooting that should be the first place you look.

Yes it says that but try the Pro features and you will find they all work as they should. At the moment there are no Pro licenses to buy and the Beta has ALL features (standard and Pro) active. Presumably when the full release comes the Standard edition will have the Pro features dropped back into demo only mode - but it isn't the case at the moment.

Sounds unlikely if it was working for a while and then packed up.

HAve you tried pugging it into another SATA port or another computer. I have had mobos with dodgy SATA sockets that work when they feel like it.

Linus Torvalds has quipped about the name "git", which is British English slang for a stupid or unpleasant person: "I'm an egotistical bastard, and I name all my projects after myself. First Linux, now git."

General Software Discussion / Re: AVAST! 5 released

I think Symantec dude was hired to move Avast up in Symantec, Mcafee etc. class.

Let's hope he doesn't use the same strategy:

  • Predatory destruction of minor competition
  • Add everything but the kitchen sink in the suite
  • Use system impact as a security tool (ie. its so bloody slow you can barely use the computer and therefore can't get infected).

How about a day for sad and depressed singles?

It all really annoys me - Christmas (nothing to do with Christianity), Easter (all about bunnies and eggs for some reason), Valentines Day (aka commercial and sick making crap day), Mothers Day (bastardised regligious day), Fathers Day ('cos mothers had one and Dad's felt left out).

When's my F*****G day?

Actually did you know that "Mother's Day" was nothing to do with mothers at all originally - Hallmark invented the current format. Originally Mother's Day was called Mothering Sunday and referred to people returning to the church where they were baptised and grew up (ie. returning to their mother church). See http://www.bbc.co.uk...heringsunday_1.shtml for details.

AVAST seems to get rated on pretty highly on detection rates in comparative reviews and scores well on false positives too. I too used NOD32 for a long time and I have to say I have had fewer false positives with AVAST.

The new GUI isn't perfect but it is a huge improvement on the old one and certainly better than NOD32's which is a bit of a sprawling mess.

Seems to work fine on XP, Vista Ult and 7 Pro here.

No issues that I have noticed. (No audio jitters for me on XP anyway)

I always thought that Windows only went into Sleep mode when there was minimal CPU activity, (eg. 0-10%) ?

AIUI it has always been to do with keyboard/mouse activity.

There is a utility on DC somewhere (Skrommel?) to simulate mouse movements every few seconds to avoid this.

Where did you get the quote from?

Avast 5 does not have a "Home Edition" any longer - it is called "AVAST! 5 Free".

On the website there is still the old registration page for version 4 but it is not used in Version 5.

Interestingly when you run the installer there is no license agreement to agree with and there is no reference to the lices in the Program install folder or in the application itself.
2049
Why? To only allow the exe to run on giveaway date, ofc!

The EXE is a pre-licensed version generated for GAOTD (ie there is no license needed to install from the extracted installer) so you can reinstall it at any time.

This trick usually works because you can extract the installer and license details where relevant. In this case you just grab the installer ;)

You don't usually even need to install the application on the GAOTD day - just run the setup to extract the installer.

By the way the script doesn't work "as is" - the folders and installer files are randomly named (not just we* folders). Just look in %temp% for the files and folders that were extracted by Setup.EXE. You can also check TaskManager to see which TMP file is being executed as the installer!

Thanks but no it doesn't help. The only way to get that to work is to set the action on all three to no action - at which point I may as well uninstall the AV altogether.

If you set the first option to ASK it does that but the only options it gives are Delete/Repair/Move to Chest - there is no ignore option.

UPDATE:

You can exclude files/folders from active shields and manual scans.

Go To Real Time Shields
Select File System Shield on the left
Select Expert Settings
Select Exclusions and add the files/folders

I tried doing this in the Exclusions list in the main settings tree but from there it doesn't seem to work.

Setting the exclusions from File System Shield has the desired effect.
