If so, who would you nominate?

Alternatively, maybe what we should do is make a special mug just made up of active forum member avatars.. It would be a pretty special mug to give out to active forum members.

see if these options improve your text blurring thing:

Improving the text box display is on my todo list, i think there are a number of things that could use improvement with them.

Official Announcements / Short Planned Site Downtime on March 28th, 2009

A note from SoftLayer that our server may be inaccessible for a couple of hours on March 28th, 2009 for planned maintenance:

SoftLayer Engineers will be upgrading the IOS and rebooting the backend/private network routers across the Dallas network on March 28th 2009 starting at 3:00am CDT. Customer Impact: Periodically during this maintenance, customers will not have access to backend/private services (DNS, updates, NAS, iSCSI, etc) as well as server to server communications on the Dallas backend network. Connectivity from remote cities to Dallas servers and services will also be affected. While the maintenance window is set for 2 hours, we expect no longer than 15 - 20 minutes of downtime.

I enjoy planning stuff on paper and always spend some time planning before coding.

I've also learned that no matter how much planning you do.. it's almost never the case that things don't change during development, and you have to accept and expect that.

More and more I find myself in the "plan to throw one away; you will, anyhow" camp.

This isn't always (often) feasible, but i find it a useful approach if you are someone like me who can spend excessive time planning and can sometimes get stalled in the planning stages because you can't seem to get everything locked down and figured out.  In times like that, trying to solve everything before you start coding can feel like a marathon where the finish line keeps getting moved back.  Deciding to just start coding a first experimental version i think can be the trick that unblocks you.

If you look at it like that, then "jumping in and starting to code with little planning" actually IS PART OF THE PLANNING (but only if you actually stop and throw away the first version and do a round of planning before moving on to the final version).

I think you are wise to focus on the issue of how YOU are going to help them when they run into trouble.  I'd be hesitant setting anyone up on a computer that used an OS i didn't know if i was going to be doing support for them. That suggests setting them up with the OS that *you* are most comfortable with.

I never realized there was that many people out there doing reviews on the dc software.
there is a LOT more to add.

I liked that you didn't just add the glowing comments
i only add the positive ones.. Cody sneaks in and adds the negative ones.. he is quite a trickster.

Site/Forum Features / Updating the Quotes page
« Last post by mouser on March 23, 2009, 10:58 PM »
I've started doing the major work updating the quotes page, which collects info found on the web or received through email about donationcoder:
https://www.donation...About/viewquotes.php

It's also used to show random quotes in a little box on various pages (for example the blog page).

I can always use more help finding more quotes.. Let me know if you want to help me scour the web and collect them.. or if you have something to say about DC that you think should be added to the page, email me:  [email protected]

The other way to look at it of course is, if you can figure out a way to create it without spending much money, give it a try -- what is there to lose?

Extended Copy Menu has been mentioned by a few people here.  As I found use for it today i just wanted to plug it.

The use i had was i wanted to be able to select a section of a web page and copy it as html -- with the href links and other html codes still in it.  In essence this is like viewing the source and copying the relevant section of the source code -- just makes it a little easier.

Provides the option to copy selection as plain text or html.
It adds a "Copy As Html" and "Copy As Plain Text" to the context (right-click) menu. It is useful if you want to copy the text or underlying html from a web page into documents, posts or other applications.

I have become very cynical about what i perceive as the almost insurmountable problem of getting exposure for good ideas.

Unless you have a couple million dollars to spend on advertising, I would worry very much about how to get the word out.

One of the biggest frustrations i hear from people trying to get new websites off the ground (whether commercial or not) is how to get the word out about their site.

I'm afraid that in the current world, a vastly inferior product with a lot of money to spend on advertising will easily bury and doom a much better product with no advertising budget or pr department.

People go into these things thinking: if it's a great product, people will flock to it.. i wouldn't count on that.

few more ideas:

Screensaver manager.  Would let users:
  • Set a new screensaver as default
  • Configure options of screensavers
  • Disable/Enable screensaver
  • Start default screensaver
  • Start any screensaver

DcUpdater / Re: DcUpdater v2 Preliminary Flirtations
« Last post by mouser on March 23, 2009, 07:05 AM »
in the screenshot in that post, would it not be more logical to have
Status: Needs Update

  • Applications: FARR

           Applications: GridMove
           Applications: Whatever
rather than
Status: Needs Update

  • Applications: FARR
  • Applications: Ungrouped

- if they are already grouped by status, why call the Applications (other than FARR) "Applications: Ungrouped"

i can see the confusion.  the second level grouping would make more sense as

  • Applications: FARR
  • Applications: Other

basically what it's doing is giving a "folder" to anything with more than 1 item, and then putting all other singletons in the "Other" folder.

Let's not get too hung up on this grouping option -- i think i agree with the general sentiment that it just makes things more messy and hard to take the information in.  it's main value will be when navigating very large listings -- perhaps if one were viewing potential applications that could be installed or something like that.

Would it be possible to have action buttons on the group header, something like Check All, Check None, Check Toggle?

possibly.

Here's another grouping, this time by website where the update is located:

the grouping of "Status -> Application" shows you that its a hierarchical grouping, first by Status, then by Application.

so the first grouping is separating everything into 4 categories depenging on update status.
then each of those 4 categories is organized by application name.

File Locator Pro is an excellent program.. very nice inside-zip searching as well.
We ran a discount on it in the past -- we should try to get one again.
