I know that the Dutch postal system only requires the zipcode and house number.

Same is true in the UK (except we have postcodes not zip codes). The postcode is unique to a handful of properties and then the identifier for the property is sufficient - at least in theory. In practice I guess most postal workers use the full address once it has got to the nearest delivery office.

That's what I figured but I can't see why the VM disc image files (and all other files too) aren't showing up.

I am using Windows XP Pro SP3 as my network destination and I have tried both simple file sharing and proper file sharing and in both cases only the folders appear on the machine run PVM WinPE disk.

Hard disks in particular should only be shipped in a way that prevents all six sides from drops by the carrier.

To be fair - the manufacturer should provide adequate pacakaging for the product. I was pretty horrified recently to receive a WD OEM internal drive in its antistatic bag just inside a card mailer. If you have to use RMA services they send you massive amounts of packaging to return the faulty item - why the heck have they started distributing new items with no more protection than a plastic bag and a sheet of cardboard. I have also received WD drives in 'bubble tube' packaging which is probably good for protection but you cant get the drive out without a pair of scissors - not good if you need to return the item.

No haven't figured it out yet. Dropped Paragon an email and awaiting reply.

Had a series of replies which didn't seem to make much sense ...

Apparently I need to install LAN drivers when using the WinPE disc. I find this slightly odd as I can see the workgroup computers when running the WinPE disc and I can also see the folders but I can't see any files at all. Surely if I need drivers I wouldn't see anything at all?

Having explained all this the conversation dried up. Anyone got any ideas?

If I do need drivers for an integrated ethernet port how do I extract the correct drivers for WinPE? The only drivers I can find are motherboard drivers that come in a Windows .exe package?

Hand-me-down furniture won't exist in the future in the same way. Out culture (I'm talking about US and Europe here) is too much based on disposable. Not to mention built-in-obsolescence.

For example I have a freezer in my garage that is at least 25 years old and still works perfectly. New freezers won't work properly in a cold environment and if my experience is anything to go by now have a life expectancy of around 5 years.

As for furniture ... who will want antique chipboard or MDF furniture?

They also do price matching with other internet companies. In the UK you can almost guarantee that Amazon products will be 1 penny cheaper than play.com.

The local daily "The Northern Echo" published in Darlington has some good (local) stuff in it, and we always buy the "Darlington & Stockton Times" - a weekly - for the local area's news, and the abstruse farming information which we do not understand but enjoy reading.  Each week they do a review of a local pub or restaurant which we can criticise if we know the place - or add to our list if we don't.

I thought the Northern Echo was produced in Leeds? Anyway I get the D&S every week - mainly because there is a fair amount about people I know (so there is the gossip factor) and you get to know what is going on in local villages.

By the way "zxcvbn" (good name by the way are you originally Polish?) where about do you live - can't be far from me in Wensleydale ;)

They always throw their own spin on it and I have come to the conclusion that my husband only knows crackpots

Have you read ANY newspaper recently - they are all written by crackpots with an axe to grind over something.

In the case of UK papers the so called 'serious' papers just toady up to one party line or another and the other newspapers just print comics for adults with lots of breasts and talk about celebrities (who are often only celebrities because they bared all in one of the tabloids).

What strikes me as most strange is that the political allegiances of the 'serious' papers are far more extremely differentiated than the political parties' policies they appear to be supporting.

When you say jack up the price do you mean they generally increase prices (not my experience almost everything is about at the lowest price I can find) or that when you log in as a Prime user you experience higher prices?

Wow, I guess I am the only dissenter here....

I can't stand Amazon.  I used to love them for many of the same reasons you choose, but I have since learned to hate them for the following reasons:

  • Few, if any, items they sell are actually sold by Amazon.  Instead, they are a gateway for other stores, not unlike Ebay.  They do not, however, generally make this obvious or well known.
  • Frequently when I tried to order something that is supposedly in stock, I get confirmation, then, a few days later a cancellation because the object wasn't in stock.  I realize this isn't directly Amazon's fault since they are not the store, but it is problematic when you are trying to find and buy a specific item - I mean not so much as an email asking how to proceed, just a flat out cancel!
  • Lastly, if you are looking for information about something, particularly technical or specific details, you might as well go somewhere else - you won't find it here.  It is a search to find something that *might* fit, then another search (via google) to find details, then a search back at Amazon just to buy it from someone else.  For all that annoyance, I will just go to the manufacturer, find exactly what I want, then Bing or Fruggle it to find the best price.  If Amazon happens to be it, good for them, but I am no longer looking there.

Enough of my rant though, I do see what many see in them, particularly for books and/or music.  However, I rarely buy these items and if I do, it is rarely online.  Those are impulse buy types of things for me.  So as for me, adios Amazon....

Must be a different Amazon to the one I am used to ...

Every listed product says "Sold by ..." near the top of the page and I would say that 95% of products I have looked at (that are still in production) are sold by Amazon (at least in the UK).

I much prefer Marketplace Sellers on Amazon to eBay simply because Amazon actually do support the customer if something goes wrong (rarely in my experience and you look at the seller ratings). I have used the A-Z guarantee on a few occasions (over the last 10 years) when something hasn't turned up in the quoted time frame and Amazon have refunded the money without question usually within 24 hours and with a grovelling apology.

No shop site has 100% accurate information on every product but I do find Amazon has a reasonable description and technical info on products and if they get something wrong it is pretty straightforward to get it corrected.

I am not an apologist for Amazon but I do find Prime delivery in the UK is pretty impressive (eg. I ordered a box set of books yesterday at 7pm, it was delivered today at 2.30pm - 19.5 hours from placing the order to getting it in my hands). They are also the only seller I have ever come across that will send out a replacement for a faulty item whilst waiting for the damaged item to be returned (damage usually caused in transit or the fault of the manufacturer - eg. I bought a laptop and the touchpad didn't work - I had the replacement within 24 hours and they sent a courier to collect the faulty goods on a day of my choosing).

They aren't perfect by any means but they make a good stab at it and are prompt with customer support (even calling you back within a few minutes when you ask them to online).

I use Amazon a lot (in the UK) and have a Prime subscription (£49 in the UK but is next day delivery). It is pretty good value and even heavy items are mostly better priced at Amazon than other online retailers even without taking shipping into account.

My only very minor gripes with Amazon are:

  • They have introduced a new feedback system in the UK which means if you leave honest feedback the seller can trash you with no ability to respond or have the offending item removed. For example I gave a seller a 3 star neautral rating because it took them 2 weeks to get round to posting the item and 5 days after that to get it delivered. In response I got a feedback as a buyer of 1 star "Awful" even though my only contact was a request for information. Amazon were unhelpful in the extreme.
  • They sometimes use a courier for quick delivery which is admirable but the delivery options are non-existent and I can't afford to wait in all day to receive a cheap DVD. The courier refuse to leave items (even when they fit through the letter box) with someone signing for the item and they won't accept a pre-signed sticky label. Amazon don't offer any help with this. Personally for cheap items I would rather have the option to opt out and wait an extra day for the normal post.

The best illustration of this was the UK release of Charlie Wilson's War - there was a 10 minute film about UNICEF before the menu appeared (along with all the other crap mentioned above). Not only was the film unskippable but you couldn't fast forward it or even stop it (apart from ejecting the disk) - plus if you press title menu it played again before the menu!!! This was so irritating the only solution was to look for a ripped copy so that you can actually watch the film you bought without having to cook a four course meal, eat it, spend the eveing in the local pub getting pissed just to avoid the crap. Maybe the DVD designer was just saying get a life - in which case he is probably correct.

Don't get me wrong I think UNICEF is a great organisation but it had absolutely nothing to do with the film whatsoever.

The thing I love about UK releases are the hilarious 'Don't be a pirate' clips that come up. They are set in Hades with a red faced torturer and they blame video piracy for everything from the worldwide economic collapse, teenage pregnancy and drug abuse to funding terrorism.

I'm pretty sure terrorism would mange on their own without worrying about pirating Home Simpson DVDs! DOH!

I think the problem might be that Windows file sharing is based on user ID. Booting from the CD means you haven't got the correct user credentials but I can't see any method within the software that allows you to enter any sort of user ID.

I would have thought proper sharing giving everyone full access should work but that seems to work even less well - you can't even see the shared folders let alone the contents.

Can someone else try this and see if it just my system with a glitch - but given that file sharing works properly in all my XP Vista and 7 installations I can't see why it should be a problem.

Just bought a copy to play too (at £13.99 UK).

I am trying to use the network features to do a V2P transfer from one machine to another.

I can't see any way to acheive this. In order to do V2P you have to use the boot cd but the boot cd won't let you see files in shared folders.

This is what I did ...

On an XP machine I used simple sharing to share my VMWare machines folder. I can access this on other workgroup machines fine but when I boot from the CD all I see is the folder and I can't see any of its contents. This means I can't access the files in the folder.

I tried switching off simple sharing and using proper sharing but that doesn't seem to work either.

Anyone got any ideas to get this to work or do I have to go to the hassle of transferring the machines to an external drive and physically moving them?

One final question - if you move installations P2V or V2P I presume it kills activation status in Windows and all other software or are there any tools to avoid this?

And for a social networking website have you ever actually tried to make contact with Facebook themselves? There is absolutely no point of contact.
