FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: SendMessage Plug-in
« Last post by Lashiec on July 27, 2007, 04:35 PM »
Umm, the only thing I can think about is setting up some keys in XMPlay as 'Global' shortcuts, and then make the plugin mimic those hotkeys to control the actions. I think it's possible but extremely hackyish (not very elegant, isn't it?). XMPlay can communicate its status to outside applications, just like it's been done with the various 'Now playing' plugins available, but not the other way around AFAIK, unless you talk to Ian to see if there's any solution.

Little trivia for you: GOM is from Samsung...)

Whoa! Those guys are everywhere. No wonder that they have so many lawsuits pending. And we thought Microsoft was monopolistic... Anyway, good to know, it was killing me not to know anything about that player, as the webpage is almost empty of information like that.

So your ALShow looks good. What's up in South Korea, with so many independent developments of multimedia software? I wonder if the ubiquitousness of high-speed Internet have something to do with it... And what's this? Codecs included? Tell me about those :tellme:

« Last post by Lashiec on July 27, 2007, 09:58 AM »
Another vote for WinRAR here, it's simply the best compression app ever made.

BTW, lanux, you could give the passport to better lands to SpinZip, as WinRAR has the same ability. When you're going to compress something, go to the "Files" tab and check "Put each file to separate archive". Pretty useful feature for those long ROM zipping sessions ;D. Although I don't know if it's capable of doing what sri was asking for in that thread

If you have a Seagate or Maxtor HDD (and thus you can install DiskWizard) you can also get the full version of Acronis for less money (if I remember correctly, it was 29$ as well)

Find And Run Robot / Re: new launcher just released
« Last post by Lashiec on July 25, 2007, 10:56 AM »
Umm, I'm going to jump in the FARR looks bashing bandwagon! (Wahey!)

Armadawn is right regarding looks. Skins sometimes doesn't look like part of the interface (that is, not native) but a bit 'hacked' onto it. 'slender' skin, for example, looks good most of the time, and the transparencies sure help, but some of the other skins doesn't look very nice when you compare FARR against other launchers or skinned apps. Other thing that bothers me is that the skinned interface also extends to other parts of the app, like the 'About' box and the 'Customize toolbar' panel, where, sadly, some skinned buttons look like crap.

Another thing regarding looks is icons. The two icons in the 'launch' window are shouting "redesign me!", as they're envious of the nice tray icon designed by Hamradio (now that's a welcome change). Those search icons also demand higher resolution versions.

I know that most of you demand responsive software, but it's a fact that good looking (heck, even amazing looking) is compatible with performance (XMPlay coming to mind). I have the feeling that, somehow, C++ Builder is a obstacle in this, but could be easily overcome (mouser, change to Qt and release FARR source under the GPL immediately!! :D)

Something should be done with the 'Preferences' panel as well, it's flooding with options, but so far, I didn't devise a possible solution.

Perhaps all of this (FARR looks) should be discussed in a separate thread, as this one was, originally, about another launcher. And it's possible that all of these ideas should be disccussed towards FARR 3, as FARR 2 release is imminent? (hey, look, we're like Apple zealots, talking about the next big thing, when the former one wasn't released ;))

*mouser bans user 'Lashiec' permanently*

Well, at least Tech Support is finally useful. Not for computers, but the benefits are far more rewarding ;D

mouser, I've been experiment with FARR this night, and I have a technical question. Does it really make a difference in reaction time to have the heaviest or the lightest memory profile in "Inactive memory use"? I'm not noticing anything, and I remember correctly, I didn't have speed problems in the old workhorse.

Bah! I have to make a donation of 1 cent just to make you lose 1 or 2 dollars, and wait for that survival kit! It's not worth the effort to punish DC, as I wanted you to lose millions. I might as well donate or click that little key generator icon, it's easier ;D

Hey, I have a bright idea! Did anyone check those warez sites to see if they have cracked DC software or key generators for those pesky nags screens? :P

I would go for Total Recorder to minimize the quality loss, and for convenience as well

General Software Discussion / Re: XP or Vista user — take the poll!
« Last post by Lashiec on July 24, 2007, 11:33 AM »
Yes, but I was talking about all the graphics acceleration. WoW doesn't run exactly on yesterday hardware, and is not one of the most demanding. That kind of things can't be done on a server, not only for performance but also because I think is technically impossible.

f0dder seems to agree with me in the convergence of desktop and web apps. But I fear that they turn games and multimedia tasks into niche market with dedicated (and expensive) machines (wait, game machines are expensive right now!), just for the sake of the big slice in the market (casual users).

steeladept, last time I checked, WoW and Everquest needed to be installed on a real computer, not a server. So the main system is doing all the number crunching, the server only functions as a "house". Not even SecondLife (if you consider that a game) can work like that, and it has awful graphics for this time. And if MMOs are the gaming future, I'll stick with Diablo II then ;)

Ah, Carol. Yes, that's what I fear, as I said, that they turn all the gaming into console gaming, which will practically shun certain types of games (think independent games, emulators...). 8 Gb?? How many is that in megabytes? 1 Gigabyte? That's impossible!

Of course, and next year I'll be playing Crysis in Opera :D

I don't know where all this fuss and desire to push web apps comes from. How do you run a browser without an OS? Are they going to transform the OS into a full-blown browser? I've been months trying to imagine a world with only web apps, and I really can't make up one. The future, I say, will be composed of desktop and web apps. Of course, big companies want to go web all the way, for they can charge you dearly for using their apps, and you can't escape its influence. But, what about all the small developers? How do they fund their developments? What about DonationCoder, for example? How do you run mouser's apps on a browser? AutoHotkey? Where do you store your information, in your hard disk, or in the megacorporation servers? I can also sense the FSF feelings conflicting over this, you can't make a web app OSS (unless you get all the code and you modify it yourself in your IDE, I mean, an IDE over a browser)

I'm not even taking into account the massive amount of memory needed to run some of the apps you usually run on your desktop, not all the security considerations. I think that all those articles are written by narrow-minded people (it's my harsh side again!) that really thinks everyone is using his/her computer to write some documents here and blog there, so they don't take in consideration other people needs. The worse part is that the software world wants to move in that direction, and so do some users.

I said it before, I really appreciate web apps. But a synergy between the two models will be better for everyone. After all, considering the amount of work done in different locations by a single person, it's better for this one person to do all this work in a web-running app, instead of carrying that work between different machines. Not to mention the amount of work needed for a web-based world to become true doesn't compensate for a minimum increase in productivity. A paradigm shift won't bring anything really valuable. After all, computers didn't make the world better, instead they made us their slaves! ;)

Bah, I'm sounding like and old jerk instead of a young guy! ;D

PD: I know! All of this is a Apple conspiracy to push the iPhone!

Ssshhh! App, don't give Microsoft ideas! ;)

XP here as well. I just moved from 98 SE a month ago or so, and I'm still exploring XP. I don't have any desire to put Vista yet, and I don't know if I hold on 'til Windows 7, that depends on RAM cost in the future.

For a MP3 collector alternative, you could use one of the many CD//DVD cataloguers around. They probably support Unicode and some of them are free as well. Besides, you'll get freed from Collectorz curse ;)

A question: what is a MP3 organizer? For me, either Mp3tag or foobar are valid candidates to that. They tag files, reorganize folders based on metadata information, they're fast for searching songs, they give a general view over big collections... What else are you looking for in an organizer?

Uhm, reading your post makes me realize that I've been a bit more aggressive than it was necessary in my response.

A switching experience is always interesting, whether is a SO or a GF (*ahem*). But I feel that to make a valuable contribution, not only for the other people interested in the experience, but also for your reputation as a blogger (in this case), a good written article is of more interest. The point I want to make is that you can't switch from Vista to Linux in 1 day and think you can pinpoint your view about the feeling of the latter compared to the former without almost no dwelling in the innards of Linux. Maybe for the casual users is more than enough, but for the power users, the experience is of not that much help, because of all the power inherent in any SO. I mean, I want a real good article about a switching experience, not a quick tour around.

In other words, I want Ars Technica and not SuperSite for Windows ;D

Even you seem to agree with me saying that you're not done learning Linux yet. And you've been with it quite some time compared to this guy. Of course, you don't stop learning something new, even about old things, never, but a time adapting yourself to the new situation is more than necessary in those cases.

OK, this is seriously impressive... let me see what can I say... *faints*

*Recovering time...* Well, now you're extending FARR into broad territory, basically implementing a minor but quite useful function that should be included as a default with Windows. Not only that, but you're also relieving some people of a program in the systray, and you're leaving other ones without a job! ;D (and that includes mouser :D). I say that after this, everything is possible. You have my admiration and gratitude. Just as soon as I can try it, you'll get a token of my appreciation ;)
