But with a direct brain neuro-interface hookup, it might be usable, and even nice to use?

You mean like Windows TP?
Windows for Telepaths

...You open the box labeled "Windows TP", carefully extracting the pouch labeled "License Agreement". You examine the contents of the pouch, finding an inflatable beanie bearing the Windows logo rather than the familiar 3.5" diskette package. You inflate the beanie, insert two "C"-size batteries (not included), and carefully place it on your head.

You press the Start button.

Immediately, the image of an hourglass comes to your mind. You find yourself trapped; unable to move anything in your body save your eyes.

After an indeterminable delay, you regain control of your senses. You are suddenly compelled to speak your name and business affiliation. You then retrieve your Windows TP package and chant the Product-ID number.

Suddenly you see the words "Windows is detecting new hardware" flash before your eyes.

You crash to the floor, writhing in agony. You feel every muscle in your body contract and retract in turn. Your mind is filled with the image of a blue inchworm, creeping slowly across a grey field...

I'd like to see Ralf re-write that article for Vista...

The point was that a whole bunch of shell extensions haven't been released in 64bit versions yet. Using the 32bit version of xplorer2 lets you use 32bit shell extensions on a 64bit windows
You know, I should have seen that from the context of the discussion.

Thanks for that one, f0dder. I'll use it wisely...

Also, the IcoBundle utility can take multiple .ico files and "bundle" them together.
http://www.telegraph...com.au/sw/#icobundle
2009
1- Rip the icons: http://www.thugsatba...ab/?q=other_tabiripp
2- Manipulate the png's with Gimp or ImageMagick or PIL (whichever works best and fastest)
3- Pack them back together with your favorite icon editor. I've been liking IcoFx lately.

If you want a command-line tool for the re-packing, Matthias Brenkmann's png2ico doesn't do 32-bit icons, so go to http://mattahan.devi.../art/GANT-3-15364715 and download the icon package. Inside is a nifty utility named png2ico written by Andreas Verhoeven (of AveDesk fame...) that does 32-bit icons. It takes a trip through the help to get the hang of it, but basically it takes all the pngs in a folder and transforms them into bundled ico's at different sizes. The only drawback is it starts with a png and resizes, so start with the biggest one you can extract.
Here's the batch file I use. Just drop a file of 128 px pngs on the .bat :
png2ico.exe -s 128 32bpp -s 64 32.bpp -s 48 32bpp -s 32 32bpp -s 24 32bpp -s 32 16bpp -s24 16bpp -s16 16bpp -i %1 -o %1\icons\

Oh, what have we done?

Then one day at DEVCON, while the Sneetches of PC
were moping, just moping after Jobs' keynote at three,
sitting there, wishing their bellies had logos,
up zipped a stranger in the strangest of Volvos.

"My friends, " he announced in a voice clear and non-heinous,
"My name is Torvalds, first name of Linus"
I've heard of your troubles; I've heard of your burden.
But I can fix that; I've got a new kernel version.
I've come here to help you; I have what you need.
My prices are low, and my licence is freed,
and my work is one tenth of one cent guaranteed."

Careful now... It took at least 3 accidents with copy and paste to make that (and a perspective tool).
Taking on such a project would involve me actually learning something!  :o

(though I think it's a good idea too...)

p.s. Anybody have scans of the book, maybe I'll give it a good running start and see if I can actually complete something.

city_zen said that Microsoft would prefer you steal Windows that use Linux. I don't seem to have the link bookmarked any more, but I read an article a while back about that.
I think Mouser posted about that here: https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=765.0

Since we're dreaming, I'd like an Edirol UA-101 (or FA-101) Computer Recording Interface.
Ten channels of 24-bit audio goodness. It doesn't get much better than this.

How about decent USB audio support on Linux? Would that count as 'better'? ;D

OK, I had a look-see and it looks like speakerplans.com has more about designing folded-horn bass cabs than anything.
Should be great for what you're planning, 40Hz.
I've found a lot of great resources at Parts Express regarding speakers and components, but the best is their DiY Projects section and the pages on speaker and crossover design. I found a design that uses the same size of speakers I'm planning to use, so I'll do a mashup and see if it flies or sinks.

Living Room / Re: Uncomplicated speaker design, please

A lot of it is determined by what speakers you're using. Different types/brands/sizes have different physics behind them.

Which is why most speaker design schemes need at least the basic Thiele-Small parameters. I totally understand why and what for of all that. If I wanted to tune my speaker cabinets down to an nth degree, I'd just buy new speakers with a spec sheet included or even a kit of pre-selected parts.
My problem is I have some consumer-grade (read: ripped from busted boom boxes) speakers that I have no idea what the Free Air Resonance, Electrical Q or Tesla-Meters they're capable of. They're still good (as in operational) but are cluttering up the place. The set I plan to use are the best of the bunch so I hope to get at least better-than-dirt performance and I know that part of that involves a properly built cab and crossover.

I'll look over speakerplans.com, I think I was there already, but it looks like I'll have to go over it a little closer on the second run. Thanks for the tip!

Living Room / Uncomplicated speaker design, please
« Last post by Edvard on November 26, 2008, 12:22 PM »
This one is a VERY loaded question, I know...
I'm looking to build some cheap speakers with some odds and ends in my shop, and looked around the web at different methods for figuring the best cabinet and crossover designs.

What I found was an overwhelming plethora of softwares at various prices and each following different 'schools' of speaker design, online Java apps, whitepapers full of algebra, software packages ranging from freeware to thousands of dollars, you name it, but nothing I found actually useful.
If you're an audiophile, you know what I'm talking about, and will probably cringe at what I'm asking for.

What I want is some kind of software or even basic mathematical models in which I can ignore the technical details that I have no way of knowing, like every last Thiele-Small paramater, Flux Capacitance, Ad Nauseum, etc.

All I need is a ballpark figure for how big to make the enclosure and a general idea of what frequency to cut the crossover and I can take the lumps from there, but I KNOW the speaker design professionals would be all over my case for even considering such a thing.

Can you help?

Living Room / Re: Open DNS is s***ware
« Last post by Edvard on November 24, 2008, 12:08 PM »
Surprisingly, it was the only tool I could find that allows you to test the response time of different DNS servers.
Looks like a nice tool, as it measures actual url resolution return times rather than just ping responses.
Ping was how I measured OpenDNS vs. NoCharge, BTW.
OpenDNS came out 5x faster when I last measured, so that's what I'm using.

If all you need is a DNS faster than your ISP's and a public server will do it, then go ahead.
I use OpenDNS because of the services they offer besides (filtering, dynamic ip, etc.) and running filters locally takes up more resources than I'd like.

Books that changed my life: (i'll leave out the religious stuff...)

Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television
A dry read, but as relevant today as it was in 1977 when it was written. I read it in 1988 and never watched television again.

Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business
More of the same, but an easier read.

I also recommend almost anything by Neil Postman, Marshall McLuhanand Umberto Eco.
Notice I said "almost" and I didn't mention Chomsky (his stuff on linguistics is interesting, but I disagree with his politico-social philosophy) or the larger topic of Semiotics.

Also, Robert Anton Wilson's Cosmic Trigger, which probably had the opposite effect on me than the author intended...
