apple, perfect example of 'branding' meaning everything to the consumer.

remove the apple logo and say it was for some other company and not one single person on the planet would bat an eyelid let alone start drooling over the 'design'.

but mention the magic word 'apple' and all suddenly turns to gold.

presentation = white box with red ribbon with a silver logo - isn't that what they use at every counter for fancy cosmetics - i always thought apple were a bit feminine in their design but this one nails it for it me. (i've stopped wearing lipstick and eyeshadow so no jokes about how do i know about cosmetics, please.)

i gave up using firewalls because of zone alarm - but i won't repeat all that again - oh, okay then, there appears to be a common problem with the ZA firewall when you uninstall it or update it - tried all the work arounds i could find online - didn't work. had the same problem on friends machines - so i gave up.

f0dder gave me good reasons not to bother with a firewall so i won't complain about ZA too much - well, it is pathetic that it can't even update/uninstall/reinstall itself. up until that point i'd been a happy user of ZA for many years.

i wish we could have something like the pc market for this kind of thing (perhaps we will eventually), i mean, something of the iPhone dimensions but with the ability to cherry pick the internal hardware from different manufacturers.

that way you could upgrade through a few years of use instead of being expected to upgrade every year like the mobile phone market.

umm, i've just realised what i've said. it's never going to happen. the market has already proved that suckers, er sorry, i mean shoppers will upgrade every year without a single quarrel.

good idea, f0dder, i should have done that layout originally.

place your imaginery order.

(i'd still go for the one without the background.)

maybe a combination...

fade out the edges of the blue background so it gradually moves to transparent.

binary on top fades out at a slower rate and maybe has a random edge to it so it doesn't look like a rectangle.

kind of like as if the edges of the rectangle had been washed away.

i suppose i better do a few mockups.
2008
i really only meant i'd take the background out if it was printed on a t-shirt - i just think a solid rectangle would look a bit odd, i.e. it wouldn't look like it had been designed for a t-shirt - which it wasn't.

i don't mind revising it so it's more t-shirt friendly. of course, if no one agrees then i'll just go with the flow.

maybe just changing the background from a rectangle to a circle would be enough.
2009
a t-shirt sounds good - i think it would look better with the blue binary background removed though.

fantastic work, jgpaiva.

as i use the revolutionary and always astounding, dialogmove, i don't mind the message boxes appearing  ;) but i may remove them in a minute.

i have named the script "bodysnatcher" as a tribute to the movie "invasion of the bodysnatchers" as this pretty much describes the process that happens to the files.

cody will send you something in a minute.

many many thanks.
2012
that's a clever idea - it would work most of the time.
2013
yes, i see what you mean, jgpaiva.

a gui would be just right though.

how about something like this...

a small window - two panels - left and right.

left panel - you drop the old file.

right panel - you drop the new file.

after the second drop (i.e. both files have been dropped) the auto process takes place - old file name copied to new file, then old file deleted and new copied to old files location.

extending it further perhaps several files could be dropped at a time on each panel - the files remain in the order they were dropped and when you have an equal number of files in each left and right panel then the auto process takes place - or better, you click a button to start the process. important - if only one file is dropped on each panel then the process happens automatically without having to press a button.

are you going to be my knight in shining armour again, jgpaiva?

i'm forever replacing files that are referenced within other programs (eg. swf files referencing jpg's for a gallery slideshow).

for these kinds of things to work i have to maintain the filenames, i.e. the new file and the old file that is replaced have to share the same file name.

i find it an incredibly tedious process having to manually type each file name for each new file.

as the old file that is going to be thrown away has the correct name i'd like an 'automatic' way of taking the old file's name and giving it to the new file's name.

something like a drag and drop process would be great, something like this:

1. i drop the new file with 'randomname.jpg' onto the old file with 'specificname.jpg'

2. the old file is then automatically deleted.

3. the new file has it's name automatically changed to what the old file's name was (so randomname.jpg becomes specificname.jpg).

if there is something out there that does something similar to this then please speak up.

the main point is that i need it to be something simple - i need to pick single files out of a folder that may contain several so the drag 'n' drop process will be the quickest way of doing it. well, anything quicker than typing filenames out by hand would be good.

love you all, nudone.

as the idea of the diagram is to make things 'simple' to grasp then it looks like quite a bit of detail would have to be ignored really.

as for scales being accurate - that could be done by having zoomed in and out views. i had a look through google and i've not seen anything there that looks like what i'm trying to describe.

these are the sorts of things i'm thinking of (as they are easy to relate to).

56k connection - a human hair.

typical domestic broadband - drinking straw.

gigabit - i don't know, maybe a 6 inch diameter pipe.

other stuff i don't know the terms of.

typical connection between isp and 'internet' - pipe with 20 feet diameter.

typical connection between countries - pipe with 1000 feet diameter.

numbers are arbitrary as i haven't a clue.

then, with the general sizes/number/capacities i could put them onto a globe - zoom in and out views with cross sections of pipes within pipes.

any other devices like routers or whatever could be represented in some other quirky form.

perhaps i'll just draw it and ignore the correct scales - then if someone sees it and knows better they can correct me and i'll update it. or i'll just do a really stupid cody version then i can use magic to make it all work.

i guess what i'm aiming at is a colored cody diagram thing not unlike what william heath robinson was so great at http://en.wikipedia..../wiki/Heath_Robinson well, i can dream can't i.

i am my biggest critic, gjehle. or, at least, i try to be. but that's what you get if you are a class A egotist like myself. never let someone else's opinion get in the way of blabbing on for a little bit longer.

let's all hug anyway.

more seriously, i'm now looking at this 'question' with regard to drawing a diagram myself. i would be grateful if anyone can provide useful information that will help with the following:

i'd like to draw/illustrate (with similar graphic style to cody images, perhaps) an 'internet' map or diagram or something. ranging from the domestic level connections up to the network that connects the globe it would use the 'pipe' analogy probably using cross sections and things to try to indicate the scale of the 'internet'.

there obviously has to be known capabilities for the cables that connect countries and similarly the infrastructure that is used within a single state/country must be known. so it should be possible to scale things proportional within the diagram.

if i get get the data to do this then i may also do a 'victorian' style network picture - using technology of that age.

i'm sure you've seen the things i'm talking about - just the stuff you'd find in a poster on a classroom wall. if the data i can work with is sufficient i'll make the image quite detailed and intricate - if not it will have to remain relatively simple.

can anyone help?

i'll add that this could be a cody project - or even an official DC project if mouser would like to sanction it.

haha. thanks for pointing out that it's a dumb question. i appreciate that it is when taken litterally to be a one pipe solution.

i think i better just point out - i've never heard any of these statements or rumours about the interweb being full or about to collapse or whatever. i must live in a very secluded corner of the internet where i don't hear any of the latest gossip, nor do i know anyone that would talk to me about such things (perhaps i should visit digg.com on a regular basis to keep up to date). so, all of this alarmist mockery thing is something i can see the funny side of but it's all new to me.

i see that the title of this post "what is the potential capacity of the internet?" should really have said "can someone please provide a simple analogy to describe the internet."

i thought it would be clear from what i've said above that i'm not talking about whether the internet is grinding to a halt and nor am i asking for the whole internet to be clumped together and then given a number to indicate what it is capable of.

but i will apologise, i have obviously asked a very wishy washy kind of question that does not deserve an answer. thankfully, f0dder appeared to understand what i was getting at so the post wasn't a complete waste of time.

"why do people always seek simple answers to complex problems?" i shall have to remember that - somewhat of a paradoxical statement isn't it? (perhaps that was the witty intention.)

well, i'll just have to accept that the internet is akin to staring at the face of god then.

it is not for me to try to understand but only to wonder and gaze upon with such awe that i forgot any reasoning ability that i might possess.

seriously though, i don't see why it's a bad thing to 'picture' how things work - even if they aren't with perfect analogies. in fact, i find it a bit bizarre that i'm expected to just accept the internet as just 'something' out there that does 'something' and works 'somehow'.

i feel like i've now asked something taboo, well, i actually feel like i'm inside the matrix and i've just been spotted by agent Deozaan.  8)

I also wonder if there's multiple "internets", or if everything is so interconnected today that we only have The InternetTM.

interesting point, i never thought of that.

i see your point, canarsie. but i'd say they are part of the 'internet', but like you said they aren't part of the world wide web.

maybe 'internet' isn't all emcompassing - someone else will have to provide a good definition and the correct terms to use.

hmm, it is confusing or, at least, makes it hard to visualise what things would look like when there seem to be no restrictions for some things and then slow downs for others.

perhaps it really isn't about the capacity of the 'pipes' but the 'pumping stations' that connect everything. extending that analogy too - the internet isn't like pumping water through big pipes - it's more like water ways with boats travelling across them. the water ways tend to be enormous with a great number of boats/ships sailing along them but the stations that reroute the boats from one water way to another can only do things so quickly.

i can see we need a visual representation that would demonstrate the speed at which the water way travels and the amount of traffic it could handle (perhaps the cargo the ships carry is also useful to note as that would indicate the data size maybe). and, we need something to indicate server capability as in the rerouting stations.

or something better...
