My experience with soundcards is somewhat limited, but, i run all the sound thru a 100w amplifier and the difference between the on-board sound and the sound card (I use a creative USB live thingy) is quite noticeable even to my jaded ears, so if you can borrow one for a trial you can check it out, since they aren't all that cheap and if it makes no difference to you then its obviously not worth buying.  Ramble ramble ramble lol

Screenshot Captor / Re: Latest Screenshot Captor Version's Tiny Initial Window?

I was using chameleon startup manager for a while, I use winpatrol now, not quite as configurable, but it works!, and it suits me fine, it also provides some added security to your system if you want it to, which I like (and by default, but you can configure that to what you want) you might like to look at it.  http://www.winpatrol.com/

And a web browser that doesn't let you browse the web seems to me to be not very good software.  It may have all the potential in the world but if it doesn't do even the basic thing a web browser should do then its not really much good.

Actually, lanux's script does all I need or want, perhaps if you were to change FARR then a button to toggle it could be the way to go.  Thanks for the script lanux  edit: And Nod5

I've been using Stardock's multiplicity for quite a while for what input director does, it isn't free but from all the reviews I read about it it is perhaps the easiest to set up and use.  I've only changed the setup once in 12 months or so, I keep my laptop on a different side now  :)

well, it was in my first full time job after leaving school, I was a computer operator, not a programmer, we wanted a printout that said merry xmas and I got the job of doing it, in COBOL, and I even punched the cards myself  ;)

Living Room / Re: Favorite part of the Beijing Olympics so far?
« Last post by Grorgy on August 13, 2008, 04:30 PM »
I think swimmers, and no doubt all athletes, are improving for a number of reasons, there is the technology they use, but lets face it, how much help is a swim suit really going to give you?.  Then there are improvements in diet and exercise/training methods, improvements in sports psychology and money.  People are now able to continue in sports long after people in earlier times had to go out and get a proper job.  This allows them to be full time athletes with the advantages to their performance that comes with that.

I think faking the fireworks and not letting the little girl singer sing because she wasn't as pretty as the other at the opening ceremony were the highlights, captured the modern day Olympic spirit perfectly I thought.

I'm pretty happy with Win XP and can't really face the thought of having to learn something different... I must be getting old!

Me too Ampa  ;D , though I will upgrade to Vista when I get a new computer, unless Vista's replacement is out and about!

Living Room / Re: Skimp or splurge?
« Last post by Grorgy on August 03, 2008, 06:35 AM »
I really like my gym membership  :)  For me its money well spent, they provide a comprehensive service and plans tailored to you individually for your age and general health status, when I first started going I was approaching 50 and was just out of hospital and could hardly walk far enough to do the shopping.  So I think gym membership will be one of those that depend very much on your situation and needs.  They are also a great way for some to get a bit of social interaction, a friend of my mothers, he is now in his 80's wouldn't miss his days at the gym, loves every moment and is happier and fitter than he has been in years.

Skim milk, well, again thats a life style choice, and will depend on what you need.

If you can find what you need at Army surplus stores they have some great deals, I like them.

I tend to splurge on books, love books, and shoes, as app says, ya need happy feet  ;)

Thanks for the post, I like the cheat sheet.  It has a lot of stuff that I've always known, read in books and then forgotten to use and dont have time to reread the book, a couple of pages is a great tool.

General Software Discussion / Re: Merging Word documents
« Last post by Grorgy on July 30, 2008, 08:08 AM »
I dont know if you can still do it, and i cant find it easily now, but you used to be able to use an include command, include and the file name, we used it to set up chapters in a user manual, each file could be updated individually, and each was quite small, 10 pages max, but the whole document once combined was 500 or 600 pages long.  ahhh here it is, it doesnt mention it as working in 2007 but it may

http://wordtips.vita..._Word_Documents.html

Word provides a very easy way to combine documents, without the typical cut-and-paste routine. This is great for boilerplate text in your document. All you need to do is use the INCLUDETEXT field within a document. Follow these steps:

   1. Insert a pair of field braces by pressing CTRL+F9.
   2. Within the field braces type INCLUDETEXT, followed by a space and the name of the document you want to include. For instance, if I wanted to include MyFile.Doc, I my field would look as follows:

      { INCLUDETEXT "MyFile.Doc" }

   3. Press F9 to update the field.

At the point, the specified file should appear within your document. If it doesn't (for instance, if you get an error message), then make sure you typed the document name correctly, and that you included a full path name. (You must include the full path name if the document is in a directory different from the one in which the current document is located.)

It installed ok for me, but excel 2007 wouldn't close properly and on occasion crashed while trying to close.  Others may fare better.
