General Software Discussion / Re: Scripting vs. Programming
« Last post by Rover on July 25, 2006, 09:20 AM »
I was thinking about the origins of scripting.  I think that Unix shell scripting would be among the first scripts.  I'm open to correction on that.

As I think about things in that light, scripts are special purpose, automation tools.  Think "Read from the script."  They tend to much less user interactive.  The purpose is to automate a routine or tedious task.  ie: start my web server with all of it's command line parameters.

There seems to be a fuzzy line where a script can become an application when you start adding more options and/or user control.

I must be up to 4 cents by now.... :two: :two:

I acquired a lot of the generic systems from customers who didn't want them anymore.

The monitors are all very nice on purpose.  If you're going to spend many hours a day staring at a screen, it had better be a good one or else you'll go blind. :)  Seriously, your eyes are important, I'd prioritize a monitor or CPU, RAM and/or HD space.

Living Room / Re: Quck change artists — WTF?
« Last post by Rover on July 21, 2006, 08:22 PM »
I saw a magician do a similar (1 change only) trick at Comdex '89.
Side note: Comdex used to be really cool... do they even have it anymore?
Also:  That was last century... eek!

She was about 3 feet away, and I didn't see the change happen!  No hoops either.  She just jumped off a 4" platform and landed with a new dress.  I was able to see that the dress was 2 colors and was designed in some way to release at the shock, fold over itself and change.  Pretty cool even it you know how it's done.

All of that still doesn't explain what they did in this video.  Cool Stuff.

Programming = Cooking.

Scripting = Short order cook
Application Coding = fine food chef

Easy.  :D

Microsoft and XenSource Join Forces to Aid Server Virtualization
http://news.yahoo.co...MTA0cDJlYmhvBHNlYwM-
Microsoft is living up to its promise to reach out and build bridges with the
Linux and open-source community and will on July 18 announce a strategic relationship with XenSource for the development of technology to provide interoperability between Xen-enabled Linux and Windows Server virtualization.

The move means that when the technology is available, those enterprise customers deploying Novell's SuSE Linux or Red Hat Linux, would have two world-class virtualization solutions built to take advantage of all the things that Linux has to offer, along with the assurances around that, said Bob Muglia, the senior vice president for servers and tools at Microsoft, ahead of the announcement.

As requested:
Another intresting option is to use a sandbox tool, for example the free Sandboxie.

Once an app is run trough Sandboxie, all disk & registry access go trough a transient temporary area.
That is, if you run Notepad trough Sandboxie, open a file, modify and save it, that file will results modified for that Notepad instance, but the "real" file (outside the sandbox) will remain intact.

You could also run a virus trough it, without worrying about it infecting/modifying the registry or any files, so it come handy if you need to run some EXE that you don't trust too much.

Topic: better than using an unistaller? Altiris SVS
https://www.donation...76.msg22102#msg22102
This is nice if you test many new apps a day. it does not change your system, as all the changes are captured in the virtualization layer. I guess it is safer than writing to the registry etc and then undo the changes *using e.g., your uninstaller 2006). It's kind of like UT3 but clearer (to me).

As a follow-up to a recent ICQ discussion, mouser asked someone (I volunteered) to write up the status of the Virtual Machine Software in the world today.  Or at least the world as we know it.  :P

VMware has several offerings, both Free and Not Free.  Their list of Free Virtualization Products can be found here:
http://www.vmware.co..._virtualization.html

The summary of which is:

VMware Player
- Run, share and evaluate pre-built applications and beta software in virtual machines with VMware Player.
- You cannot create VM's with the Player.

VMware Server
- Runs on Windows or Linux, i386 or x86_64
- Create Virtual Servers and/or Workstation (No sound support)
- VMware Server replaces VMware GSX which requires an Operating System to install.

VMTN Virtual Appliances
- Download pre-installed and pre-configured applications that run in a virtual machine. Provided by VMware partners.

NON-FREE VMware Products
VMware Workstation
Use the VMware virtualization platform for development and testing and see immediate improvement in time to market, costs, and quality. Enterprise development organizations can consolidate servers and desktops used in test and development; copy exact multi-module production environment into virtual machines for testing; eliminate repetitive configuration tasks from development and testing cycles and simulate complex multi-tier applications on a single physical platform.
-VMware

VMware ESX
This is VMware's serious enterprise stuff.  Create Virtual Servers and Manage Virtual Servers from your web browser.  Cluster physical servers to increase reliability.  Add VMotion to migrate Virtual Servers from one physical system to another while they are running.  Includes built-in cluster file system for simultainous access to data from different ESX Servers.

Microsoft Vitrual Server 2005
In conjunction with Windows Server 2003, Virtual Server 2005 R2 provides a virtualization platform that runs most major x86 operating systems in a guest environment, and is supported by Microsoft as a host for Windows Server operating systems and Windows Server System applications. Virtual Server 2005 R2's comprehensive COM API, in combination with the Virtual Hard Drive (VHD) format and support for virtual networking, provide administrators complete scripted control of portable, connected virtual machines and enable easy automation of deployment, and ongoing change and configuration.
-Microsoft
Free.  Currently at Beta 2.  See more here: http://www.microsoft...lserver/default.mspx

Microsoft Virtual PC w/ SP1
Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is a powerful software virtualization solution that allows you to run multiple PC-based operating systems simultaneously on one workstation, providing a safety net to maintain compatibility with legacy applications while you migrate to a new operating system. It also saves reconfiguration time, so your support, development, and training staff can work more efficiently.
Free.  See the site: http://www.microsoft...rtualpc/default.mspx

From Xensource
Industry leading open source hypervisor virtualization technology. The Xen 3 hypervisor has the features and performance for production environments. Supports Intel VT, AMD Virtualization, 32-way SMP, PAE, and 64 bit addressing.
-Website
Free, but requires a modified kernel to run.

Also from Xensource
Xen Enterprise -
XenEnterprise™, the first commercially packaged and supported Xen solution, enables you to easily get Xen up and running. It’s an integrated package that includes a comprehensive tool set to simplify deployment, provisioning and management of a Xen-based virtual infrastructure.
Not Free.  See Xensource for details.
http://www.xensource.com/products/

To Sum Up
VMware has 2 Free offerings:  A Player that plays pre-created Virutal Machines, and VMware Server, a free Server oriented virtualization product.  They also have VMware Workstation and ESX Server as commercial products.

Microsoft has a free Virtual Server and Virtual PC.

Xensource has a Free and and Commercial Enterprise version.

Virtualization is here to stay.  I have used VMware Server since the early betas and it is very fast and stable.
I have not used the others.  Give them a try and let us (all here at DC) know what you think.

Please feel free to add or correct information here as needed.

[Edit Note: Thanks to Mouser for pointing out the Missing Virtual PC - d'oh!]

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows XP Myths
« Last post by Rover on July 16, 2006, 12:35 PM »
Myth - "The Windows Platform has more Security Vulnerabilities than the Linux/Unix Platform"

Reality - "Between January 2005 and December 2005 there were 5198 reported vulnerabilities: 812 Windows operating system vulnerabilities; 2328 Unix/Linux operating vulnerabilities; and 2058 Multiple operating system vulnerabilities" - Source
I hate when people quote stats like this.  (The author, not here on DC.)
2 points:
1 those are unix AND Linux OS vulnerabiliities.  So I claim that Windows and Mac have more than OS/2.  What the hell does that mean?
2 what that hell does Unix/Linux vulnerabilities mean?  All of the software that runs on *nix included?  Just the kernel?  What?

That's like saying IE has less vulnerabilities that FF.  On what OS?!!!  FF supports several.  IE only 1.  Is that any kind of real comparison?

99% of all stats are made up on the fly....

Sorry for the rant.   :-\

Ok i can understand searching for terrorists. However those of us that are not terrorists, will have our stuff gone through same as those that are guilty.

But if we don't treat everyone the same, then people (not everyone) start screaming about Profiling.

Bottom line is that it's a tough nut to crack, and the terrorists are the ones to blame.

Personally I don't care who looks at my stuff, as long as they don't steal anything. :)  I respect the opinions of those who feel differently.  I also understand that allowing that kind of thing opens a can of worms...

Finally, just because you are paranoind, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.   :D

mouser, et. al. - While I agree that your examples of bad code are indeed bad, I don't condem the language for it.  Just becuase you can use it to write bad code, doesn't mean you should.

Given the right "bad" attitude I think you can make any language look like that.  Not exacltly mind you, but there's always something you can do that just as bad.

So a year ago, I bought a set of Audrey Hepburn movies.  Beautiful Audrey  :-* is and was too old for me :(
So I just watched J. Love Hewitt :-* play Audrey in The Audrey Hepburn Story.  Where in the heck have I been?
Oh yeah, she's about 15 years too young for me :(

So, I've decided I was born in the wrong time, either 10 years to early, or 30 years too late.  Bummer.

At least Cody is ageless  ;D
