General Software Discussion / [How To] Switch tabs in Chrome by using the mouse wheel
« Last post by sri on September 07, 2008, 02:35 PM »
Tab Mix Plus add-on for Firefox has a handy feature where in you can switch to previous and next tabs by scrolling your mouse (with the cursor on tab bar) up and down respectively. We can achieve the same in Google Chrome using AutoHotKey. This post gives the details:

I have updated the script and modified the single key presses so that windows key has to be pressed.

So now using the script:

Win+a: Switch to previous tab
Win+s: Switch to next tab
Win+z: Go back
Win+x: Go forward
Win+c: Close tab

ClassNN value of Chrome's address bar is: Chrome_AutocompleteEdit1

I am a novice at programming but will try to modify the .ahk so that the keys don't work when ClassNN = Chrome_AutocompleteEdit1.

By the way, I've updated the script so that CAPS lock will open a new tab in Chrome. Works even when Chrome is not running or not the active application. If you want CAPS lock to work again, simply press Shift+CAPS. Shift+CAPS toggles between default functionality of the CAPS lock and tab opening in Chrome.

General Software Discussion / [How To] Set keyboard shortcuts in Google Chrome
« Last post by sri on September 05, 2008, 06:14 AM »
Hi guys,

As you already know Google Chrome does not yet offer customizable keyboard shortcuts. In the mean time, we can use AutoHotKey for setting keyboard shortcuts to common tasks like switching to previous and next tabs, going back and forward in the history, closing and un-doing last closed tab. Function keys can also be mapped for these actions.

I have written about it in a blog post. If interested, check it out.

Thanks to Lanux.

General Software Discussion / Re: OperaTor - Anonymous surfing using Opera

A few days back when I tried the latest version, it was painfully slow.

While PowerPro is like a swiss army knife that can handle text snippets expansion, I don't think it can match with dedicated text expansion software like Direct Access and PhraseExpress. I use PhraseExpress heavily. As I mouse over its icon in the systray, I see that I have saved $138.47 by using it. Of course, it's just an indication of how much I am dependent on it.

There is a difference in philosophy of Firefox and Opera. Opera tries to include a lot of features in one package by default whereas in Firefox, the user should install the features that he is interested in by way of add-ons.

Hence, modifiable keyboard shortcuts are not provided by default in Firefox and I don't think lack of them should be termed as a bug. I have set the following keyboard shortcuts in Firefox:

a - Switch to previous tab
s - Switch to next tab
z - Go back
x - Go forward
c - Close current tab
