Post New Requests Here / Re: So, about wallpaper changers...
« Last post by ConstanceJill on December 25, 2013, 05:15 AM »
@ skwire : I tested the prototype, pointed it to a folder with a few pictures, set it to change every 1 minute and clicked start, but whether the exlusionary process I added is running or not, it doesn't seem to actually change the wallpaper even after waiting several minutes ^^'

@ Shades : I've been using John's Background Switcher for a while now but the resizing of small pictures is pretty bad too :/
I'll take a look at the other two you've mentionned.

@superboyac : Wallpaper Master is cheap enough indeed yet I don't like that the freeware version doesn't allow PNG images, even though these would be the ones to choose for testing the quality of its resizing :(

Hello there :]

I just tested the Lite version and it seems to be doing a good job as for the resizing of pictures without noticeable quality loss :}
However I didn't find where I could specify to stop when a specific program is running. I've read on its website something about CPU load, but Diablo is such an old game it will probably never load the CPU enough to trigger that feature ^^'. The reason why I want to prevent the wallpaper from changing when it is running is not because of performance issues but because if the wallpaper changes while the game is running, it will corrupt the game's colors.

So I'll still wait for skwire's prototype, but I'll keep this one in a corner of my HDD just in case, thank you :}

Edit: now that I think of it, I might just use this program you told me about and run the game using a script that kills/exits the wallpaper changer before running the game and runs it again after the game exited… that probably would be a simple solution for everyone.

Post New Requests Here / So, about wallpaper changers...

Hey there .o/

I have a kinda specific request, for after trying various wallpaper changers I can't find the one that perfectly meets my needs.
It seems simple (at least from a user's point of view) yet from all the programs I've tried, all miss at least two of the following features :
- randomly chooses a picture from a folder (and its subfolders) to set as wallpaper and repeats the process after a user definable delay
- provides good quality picture resampling¹, keeping aspect ratio no matter what, including support of PNG files ; I don't mind if that requires another freeware (such as IrfanView) to be installed
- can be told to suspend its action if some specific process (in fact any one from a user definable list) is running²
- stay "simple": I don't need such things as automatically get the pictures from social networks, rating pictures or dozens of options...
- be freeware? :D

I took a look at several threads around here (such as https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=210.0 and https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1008.0 ) and it seemed that probably could be done by modifying aCkRiTe's AutoHotKey script (which unfortunately I don't feel able to do).

So, does anyone know of a program that does what I want, or can make one? Please? ^^'

¹: because Windows 7's method, as well as many freewares out there, make very ugly artefacts on smaller pictures that didn't have any before upscaling them to the monitor's size, even though it would seem to be common sense to resize before converting to jpeg
²: because some older games such as the first Diablo (and most likely the first StarCraft, though I don't play this one) don't seem to like the wallpaper changing at all when using Windows 7, and I think killing explorer.exe before playing is not an acceptable option :p

Hi again :)

Yes, it also does it when the command/program to be launched is Firefox.
Tried it on 2 computers at my work, one running Windows 7 x64 and the other one running Windows XP.

Hello there and thanks for the update :]

I think I noticed some minor (one could qualify it of "cosmetic") issue with the new version though: it seems that, when launching a GUI driven command (such as mstsc for example), the CMD window stays open until either the user closes it himself, or the program which it launched is closed.

Hey there .o/

It may not be exactly what you asked for, but you may be interested in Visipics ( see http://www.softpedia...thers/VisiPics.shtml for example).

Yeah but they won't run as great as with the 1.19 patch :p
You should take some time to read what it does ;)

Also, as for Thief 1, only the Gold version is available on GOG and Steam — though I recently made a downgrade patch for those few people who may want one.

Hey there, I had not paid much attention to this part of the forums until now ^^
Thiefw  :-* :-* :-*
How could I forget about that.  That's one series I hope they re-do. […]

By the way, do you guys know about the unofficial 1.19 patch for Thief 2 yet ? :}
It can also run on Thief 1 / Gold with just a little more 'work'.

Hey there .o/

I've been using version 1.0.89 build 1 this week and I saw the window about being allowed to run only one instance.
However I didn't find an option in the GUI to choose whether or not to allow it.
Also, in my opinion, it would be better if possible, when only one instance is allowed, to make it so that, when trying to run another instance, the window of the existing instance would come up on top of other windows which may be hiding it, instead of displaying this warning window.

I love the resize helper, btw  :-*
And yes, the vertical scrollbar thing definitely seems fixed. Thanks again :Thmbsup:
212
Thanks, looks like a very nice update :}

Hello there .o/

Indeed, in my idea, the program should not add a space by itself. It would be a big problem when trying to use various commands such as :
mstsc /v:variable
mmc c:\windows\system32\compmgmt.msc /computer:\\variable
explorer \\variable\C$
shutdown -r -t -0 -m \\variable

However, I've been thinking that maybe it would be possible to make the blank spaces somehow visible in the button edition form, like in the old days of DOS apps, where you had a font with fixed width and a repeated background of characters such as "░" in fields, where nothing was written.
214
Cool, sounds like good news :}
215
Hello there .o/

Hmm I think I found a minor interface issue in version 1.0.75 build 1 : if one opens the program window and sets it in any way where there is no vertical scrollbar, then reduces the application to taskbar by clicking its button, and restores the window by clicking the taskbar button again, then a vertical scrollbar appears.
216
Well I've been using it this week and it works pretty fine :}
I've been thinking however, that an option to restrict the number of instances of the program to 1 may be a nice addition, if it can be done.

Screen Casting Application Robot, Yo!

Or "SCARY!" for short. :Thmbsup:
I second that :)

Thanks, will do next week as I'm currently on vacation ^_^

Hey there .o/

How about using Pearl Crescent Page Saver Basic ?

Also, are you sure you actually need an image capture, or wouldn't it be better, depending on how you plan to use it, to save the page as an archive (MHT file for example), so the links on the page stay functional ?
220
Yup, it works just fine now :}
221
Hmm as I've posted on my last message on the original thread, it looks like this new version is broken :'( : whichever button I click, it just opens a cmd.exe window in the directory where the program's exe is.
222
OK, thank you again :]

Edit : hmm, new version seems to be broken ? =(
Both on my home computer (running Window 7 x64) and in XP Mode, I can't get any command to work, even though I do have the .net framework 4 client profile installed, whenever I click a button it just opens CMD in the program's folder.
223
Thanks a lot again :}
224
I'd have a few more small modification requests, which follow :
 - the tooltip displayed when mouse is over a button seems to have an unnecessary empty line at the beginning : can you please remove it ?
 - also, the tooltip includes a line saying whether or not variable is ignored : since it displays a preview of the command, I guess this line isn't necessary either
 - while the "&" character is now properly displayed in the status bar, it appears doubled in the mouse over tooltip
 - would it be possible to let the custom and settings files have the xml extension instead of dat, since they appear to be xml ? :]
225
Thanks again guys :}

I think I'll stick with hamradio's implementation, since it's the one closest to the idea I had.
