Honestly, I don't even see the commercial crap. I love my wife of 18 years, and always try to find something unique.  Last year I had a Barbershop Quartet sing to her at work.  I think a holiday is what you make it, and the only reason commercialism intrudes is if one lets it or is concerned with it.  I do not let it, care not about commercial garbage. Find something local and unique to let your loved one know you love him/her/it.

My wife has just been told she most likely has cancer, so they are even more important to me now.  Remember that folks, you never know, so make them all count.

I went ahead and donated the entire box to our local Family Charities.  I think that they will make great gifts for folks in need at Christmas time next year.  If anyone wants money back, let me know.

At the very least the Windows firewall is yet another layer that needs to be penetrated to allow access to your computer. Whether or not it can be bypassed, as can ANY firewall or software is not a valid point when determining its usefulness.  If you need at least one reason why, it HELPS prevent problems.  I have used the Windows firewall for quite a few years in conjunction with my router's built in security features and firewall, and have found that the Windows firewall, even though it started simple, added an easy to use, unobtrusive layer of protection and sense of security.

From what I have seen above, you have given us nothing but the usual "I hate Windows/Microsoft" diatribe, which always comes with no hard evidence, just empty statements on how useless or horrible MS and it's software is.

Show us facts, reports, white papers, examples or stories?

Oh I see (said the blind man).  Maybe I should pay attention to the IRC channel more LOL.  I was thinking you needed the revenue.  I was actually sitting here seeing where I could save $10 a month to donate here.  Next step was passing it by the wife.  If you guys don't hear from me for a week notify my parents.  :P

I understand the need for adverts on an honest site like DC, but in my opinion they cheapen the look and feel of the site.  Not to mention the fact that any halfway competent ad blocking plugin or software will never see the ads, which renders the purpose behind said ads null.

I would add DC to the whitelist and allow the ads to display, probably even click on a few because I know the people and the site.  It would not bother me other than look and feel to put Google ads here, but maybe a better solution would be to brainstorm a unique and classy, fun, or stylish way to generate a bit of revenue.  If I was able I would easily donate $50 to $100 a month to the site, it is a second home to me on the web.  Since the layoff however...welcome to the economy.

Living Room / Re: Sex Doesn't Sell
« Last post by y0himba on January 03, 2010, 09:23 AM »
One really needs to wonder though, why does sex sell?  Have we, the ones who feed at the teat of the mainstream media whore, become so dumbed down that we allow it to sell? Personally, I prefer movies without a lot of sex.  The implied intimacy is much more effective than just throwing it all out there for the world to see.  If I wanted to see two people having sex in a movie I would rent a porn flick.  Seeing simulated or even partially real sex in a movie is just desperation to me.  I prefer to have the real thing rather than fantasize about having sex, porn or even soft core never made any sense to me.

When I go to a movie I go for entertainment, not to wank in the back row.  Commercials that feature sex or sex appeal just make me change the channel.  You want to sell me a product?  Show me facts, demonstrations, show me it works.  Don't give me smoke and mirrors or try to assume I am some lowbrow wanker that will buy it because of a 'hot chick'.  Look at al the idiots running around using Axe body spray because they assume the smell of musky animal urine combined with laundry soap is somehow going to make them smell good and be attractive, because they fell into the Lemming style trap of the commercials that caused a fad.  Seems that the highly underrated movie "Idiocracy" is more than just a mere sarcastic statement on society?

Sorry folks, I am one person that sex doesn't sell.  Unless it is my wife trying to convince me to buy her something....then I'm easy :p

Can you view the game's key then give it to her, and have her activate it on Steam?

Thanks for the link! There is a link there to download, but this is much easier.  They use redirects to ensure folks download from visiting their site, and don't leech from other sites.

Rather than post a a ton of photos in the thread, I created a small gallery of the box's contents.  http://www.y0himba.net/box

If you would like a detailed review of an item, including pictures of your chosen item being used, list it in this thread.   This will, of course, require me to open said item.  Overall the stuff in the box is unique, and great for party gifts, but I wasn't really wowed or impressed.  I await your opinions also.

I will dole out the loot in order of donations received, amount each person gets is based on the donation amount.

*Mouser was first so gets first pick of the booty. (2nd largest pick of the booty)
*4wd second pick (3rd largest amount of booty)
*ljbirns third pick (4th largest amount of booty)
*cranioscopal fourth pick (YARR! largest pick of the booty)

Thank you for your donations!

The program works and does what it is supposed to do, but the question is, why?

I have never understood the reason for stopping or limiting these options and services.  I don't see the privacy concern?  I purchased and own my copy of Windows, so what is the issue?  The only thing there I would consider stopping because of security or privacy is the Remote Registry Service, which is set to "manual" by default.  I would stop Windows Defender because it is useless and a resource hog, not due to privacy or security. Even then, I can open my services control panel and disable those services then remove the startup entries.

I want Windows to Auto Update, latest security fixes, no identifiable information sent.

Disable "questionable services".  Such as?  With the advent of service pack 2 for XP, many services were put into manual mode.  This carried over into Vista and also 7.  Which services does the author find "questionable" and what exactly is it disabling?  Why are they "questionable"?  "Oh no! The evil MS might know my time zone! The horror!"

Disarm Internet Explorer?  How exactly? What is the software disarming?  You can choose not to allow IE to send usage statistics, not to check web sites, not to check for updates right in the options.  You can even change the default search engine and tell it not to use suggestions from your chosen engine. Other than the usage statistics(which are non-identifiable) there is nothing there that is a risk or privacy concern.

Disarm Windows Media Player?  Again, right in the options, there is the ability to tell WMP not to check for updates, send usage statistics, not update media information.  I see no reason to disable any of these except maybe the usage statistics(which are non-identifiable).  You can disable the running of scripts and more, right in the options, for the super paranoid who buy into the "He-Man Microsoft Haters" or "Evil Microsoft Knows My every Move" hype.

Remove Windows Messenger?  Why?  What if you want to use it so that you can utilize all of the communication features it offers instead of a client that can IM or smiley, but no AV chat?  What privacy risk does this pose?  What security risk? Know who you are chatting to, and don't download or open anything you are unsure of. Just tell it not to run in the background, and not to start with the computer so you can use it on demand.  At best, you can patch it to not display adverts.

I could go on, but the only problem I see with privacy is if someone has an illegal copy of Windows.  I think one should examine what data is being transmitted and do a bit of research.  It is really annoying to see programs like this that rely on the uneducated paranoia and viral web hype.  if it were touted as a tweaker, and freed up resources, that is a bit different, but this one promotes itself by telling you that Microsoft is invading your privacy by offering you free automatic updates, updating your time, trying to defend against malware, checking web sites to see if they are harmful, allowing you to work on a friend's registry remotely, updating music.

I have the box here, but yesterday was Xmas Eve, today is Xmas, tomorrow I am out of town until the 28th.  I will start it on the 28th. :)

The box is BIG, and very heavy.  The stuff that I got for my kids from Archie McPhee went over very well as stocking stuffers.  Can't wait to see what is in there!

Now, off to my in-laws for Xmas dinner.  :'(

They aren't.  The software is fast and versatile, with a lot of ready to use options such as video formats for mobile devices which I use quite often.  I give this one a thumbs up.

Mediacoder's author and software are sketchy.  He was caught serving hidden advertisements in his custom Firefox interface, and is so worried about getting money that in my opinion he should be removed from Sourceforge and stop calling his software Free.

Super is powerful completely free, but has a clunky interface that takes getting used to.  I do love me some Super however.

I also use Format Factory, but the author of the software is horrible at providing any support, and the ability to convert audio always errors out on me, through 3 different machine formats and two operating systems.

The software above has a nice interface and is fairly powerful.  I am always leery of folks who drop in and promote their free software, thinking there is an alternate agenda, but that is just my old man on the Internet paranoia talking.  I like this so far.  Thanks for letting us know about it!

Stick around and enjoy all this site has to offer.
