Living Room / Tagging Conventions/Folksonomy
« Last post by siouxdax on January 29, 2009, 04:25 PM »
Hello all:
This may seem out of left field, but I know that you folks always have the answers.

I'm wanting to go through all of my bookmarks (Firefox) and give the URLs a tag. I'm a complete dork, so I want to know if there's a categorization scheme to follow. I guess I'm looking for something like the Dewey Decimal System of bookmarks. Also I think I should add that I already do some general categorization of my bookmarks in folders; for example 'art', 'tech', 'games', etc. Also, should my tags be more specific than the folders which contain them? Geez, i hope I'm making sense... :)

PS: What's all this about Folksonomy? I'm reading about it on Wikipedia...

Find And Run Robot / FARR Alias "f"
« Last post by siouxdax on October 11, 2008, 07:04 PM »
I'm wondering about the alias triggered by "f", which I looked through the aliases list to find that it's supposed to look up processes running in the background. When I type in an entry such as "firefox.exe" it takes me to http://file-extensio...xtension_firefox.exe. It says I should click on a link to find out more about that process, but it takes me to http://www.liutiliti...eextensionseeker/rb/, which tries to sell me a product named Uniblue RegistryBooster.

In the alias section of FARR it shows the following in the "results" window.

File Extension Seeker (Example: txt) - $$1 | http://file-extensio.../filename_extension_$$1 /ICON=icons\file_ext_seeker.ico
FILExt / File Extension (Example: txt) - $$1 | http://filext.com/de...llist.php?extdetail=$$1 /ICON=icons\filext.ico

I like the idea of using FARR to look up background processes, but this just seems like spam; and I know that FARR would never intentionally that. So is there anyone out there with the same problem, or have suggestions/advice, etc.?

As usual, any help or suggestions are very much appreciated!

Good idea...
I really hate the idea that Windows XP forces me to use the word "my" in front of all the document folders, but My Library would look nice since the folders are alphabetically arranged.

Thanks for taking the time to answer to such a stupid question. LOL :)

I'm running 0.9.4 on my laptop with no problems. I installed the patch on my desktop to 0.9.4, but it only played audio so I had to roll it back to 0.9.2. Anyone else having this problem. Any fixes?

Surprisingly, I've found Microsoft's PowerToy SyncToy 2.0 to be a great help. I use it to sync up my images, videos, eBooks, et cetera. (Don't hate me for using Microsoft's PowerToys... LOL)

Living Room / Inane Question...
« Last post by siouxdax on October 10, 2008, 04:13 PM »
Hello all:
So I'm doing some spring cleaning of my "My Documents" folder and have decided to combine my eBooks with all my other text files. I have all the child directories labeled as I want them, but I can't decide what to name the parent folder. Maybe "My Text Files", "My Texts", etc...

I know this question is utterly inane, but when I have a question regarding my laptop or desktop, I go straight to DonationCoder.

So, ideas?

Kind Regards,
Daniel in Tulsa

After using it for a while, I've found that CCleaner is great for tidying up my Add/Remove control panel. I like being able to correct misspells and general typographical cleanup. Thanks again folks!

Well folks, I've sifted through the various programs and have decided to use CCleaner. I like that it is freeware and that it has scads of options. I'm not saying that the rest are crap; I just find CCleaner simple and easy to use. I'm pretty nimble with certain aspects of my PC, but things like this, such as messing with the registry, I need a program to metaphorically hold my hand.

I thank you all for your input. You folks are a wonderful, and trustworthy group. You rock!

Thanks again...

Kind Regards,

Hello all:
Firstly, my apologies for my delayed reply; it's been hectic as all hell at this end. I take all of your suggestions as pure gold. I've come to trust all those here at DonationCoder. I know you wouldn't steer me in the wrong direction. So I'm going to sift through all of the suggestions and take action. I just can't stand my Add/Remove list to be untidy. :)

Again, thank you all.

General Software Discussion / CCleaner Or Not?
« Last post by siouxdax on September 23, 2008, 12:26 AM »
Hello all:
I'm needing to remove an entry on my Add/Remove Programs list that just won't go away no matter how many times I "uninstall" it. I found CCleaner (ccleaner.com) as a possible freeware utility to remove it from the registry. Is this a good idea or not? Is there something better out there? I don't want to fiddle with my registry any more than I'd have to. CCleaner also touts to be able to remove unnecessary files, which I would like, but I'm nervous about doing things like this.

Any help, suggestions, etc are much appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Daniel In Tulsa

InputDirector is amazing. It has seamless integration, copy pasting of files-clipboard is well supported! Make sure that you have shared directories enabled.

I must have a look at the Input Director, sounds very interesting. And they say it has the shared clipboard option - I hate the frustration when you want to simply copy a line from one PC to another, and constantly bump into the idea of using the clipboard.

TPR.

Thanks, I'll try that.

Hope I'm not off-topic, but I saw at the top the mention of Bulk Image Downloader. Does anyone know of a freeware version that is similar? I already use FastStone Image Viewer which does everything BUT bulk image downloading.

This is true. I looked up Digimarc in the Adobe Help Viewer. I'm talking about CS3...

I think Digimarc is one of the options in Photoshop.

Yes, it's there.

I'm not the expert here :-[ but when you say install -
is the plugin in the FARR plugin folder?
.....\FindAndRunRobot\Plugins\Character_Table\ ...

Did you restart FARR - there's other ways to reload plugins in options - but restart is the easiest to explain!

Okay, "Character Table" is activated (has a check next to it), but there's nothing in the "Alias (override)" or "Regular Expression (custom override)".

You said:
Go to Options > Plugins, Updates, Fonts > Click to Examine and Configure Plugins...
Is the checkbox next to "Character Table" activated? If yes, click on the text and look whether there are entries in "Alias (override)" or "Regular Expression (custom override)".

I'm no programmer, by any stretch of the imagination. But when I need a simple app to do a simple task I go straight to DonationCoder. Over the past couple of years that I've been using DC I have always found what I'm looking for, and highly recommend it to friends. I don't know how I ever lived without FARR!

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Character Table Plug-In
« Last post by siouxdax on June 15, 2008, 02:27 PM »
I installed the Character Table plug-in into the latest version of FARR and I can't get it to work. From what understand, I'm to type "cc $ a" (minus quotes), and then be given a choice of accent marks and diacritics. No luck for me. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Any help is much appreciated.

Well somehow a connection was made in my brain that allowed me to remember seeing an alias, 'define'. That works just fine for me! But again, Mouser, you rock!

Ah. Plugins. Of course. Well, I did that and then I realized it wasn't the sort of dictionary I would use. I thought it would just look up an English word that I input. Oh well. You still rock!
