Thanks for telling. That's a good deal for quality dl I suppose.

Though I have to say, I'm such a cheapskate that if I produced a coaster I'd still really be depressed.  ;D

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: GAOTD Wondershare Time Freeze 2.0
« Last post by sajman99 on August 26, 2010, 06:42 PM »
Well, I hope somebody had more luck with Wondershare Time Freeze than I did.

On XP Home I still had GUI anomalies which prevented me from activating the system protection.

Upon installation I was notified there was a possible conflict with Acronis True Image (actually Seagate DiscWizard is installed)--specifically with the driver snapman.sys. Since I have no intention of uninstalling Acronis/Seagate, that was the end of my Wondershare experiment.

No Time Freeze for me.  :(

Found Deals and Discounts / GAOTD Wondershare Time Freeze 2.0
« Last post by sajman99 on August 25, 2010, 07:23 PM »
Today's (8-25-10) Giveaway Of The Day is Wondershare Time Freeze 2.0-- a system virtualization software regularly priced at $39.00.

http://www.giveawayo...are-time-freeze-2-0/
Wondershare Time Freeze 2.0 is easy and effective virtual system software. It creates a virtual environment for your system partition, on which you surf online, run applications and test game installations. All changes (computer history, new installations, infected virus) occur on the virtual system will disappear. So your real system is protected and your privacy is safe and can’t be peeped by others.

Succeeded the easiness and effectiveness of 1.0 version, Time Freeze 2.0 adds support to 64-bit OS, enhanced MBR protection, adds Physical Memory Buffer mode which speeds up virtual system performance at 60%. The improved GUI also brings you better using experience.

It takes 2 clicks to enable virtual system protection. And when you return to the real system, you have the flexibility to save or discard virtual system data. Use it together with antivirus software to safeguard your computer!

I tried the free version of this program some while back, but I experienced some GUI issues and I couldn't activate the system protection.

If anybody has impressions/opinions on this software, please post 'em here. Gotta go...the clock is ticking.  ;)

Same here, I still use Cathy (though not nearly as much as I used to).

Just about every other disc cataloger looks better than Cathy's minimalist design. BUT for its simplicity, size, speed, and portability, Cathy reigns supreme IMO.

General Software Discussion / Mouse Jiggler
« Last post by sajman99 on August 25, 2010, 03:57 PM »
Mouse Jiggler is a free and tiny Codeplex utility which some users may find useful.

http://mousejiggler.codeplex.com
Project Description:
Mouse Jiggler is a very simple piece of software whose sole function is to "fake" mouse input to Windows, and jiggle the mouse pointer back and forth.

Useful for avoiding screensavers or other things triggered by idle detection that, for whatever reason, you can't turn off any other way; or as a quick way to stop a screensaver activating during an installation or when monitoring a long operation without actually having to muck about with the screensaver settings.

Requirements:
Requires .NET Framework 2.0, nothing else.

The security company Sunbelt Software is establishing a DNS Server named ClearCloud DNS which can be used to block malware sites.

This is a free service (currently in beta) which is designed to add an additional layer of security.

Details can be found here:  http://www.clearclouddns.com/

I am trying to figure out if the HOST file is a good way to prevent malware on computers??

Apparently folks aren't using the HOSTS file as a malware blocker as much as they used to. Perhaps many users now more effectively rely on sandboxing and virtualization software for malware protection.

In this Wilders poll "Do you use HOSTS file?", the majority of respondents (60.90%) indicated they no longer use it. Many folks indicated maintaining the HOSTS file is a futile exercise.

Also, I checked the iCare Giveaway URL at LinkScanner Online. No exploits detected there.

Then I checked WOT online to see if there are any issues with the iCare site's reputation.
No issues detected--green lighted in the sub-categories trusworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy, and child safety.

Hmmm...that's strange. :o  I have Avira AntiVir Personal and it doesn't indicate any problem here.

tomos, do you have the paid version with active webguard? Or have you increased the "heuristics" and/or "threat categories" settings?

I'm reasonably certain there's no issue with the software, but if anyone knows otherwise please tell. :tellme:

Today is the last day of this contest for Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder.

I know you cannot wait to give them your email.  :P

btw I never knew about Smashing Apps before, but I find it's a nice site.

Those who want a full version of iCare Data Recovery Software (which includes several modules including Format Recovery) can go here for the download and registration code.

Note: I am aware the site indicates this offer expired on July 15th, but I am telling you that it still works.

I just discovered Bvckup and really like what I'm seeing with this beta synchronization software. Seems the features are well thought out and implemented in a simplified GUI.

Bvckup is currently free during the beta stage and will be $19.95 for a personal license/$49.95 for a commercial license.

BUT take note Bvckup beta testers are appreciated by the author. 8)

Hi,

Have you tried the open source Mixxx?  http://www.mixxx.org/

I honestly don't know much about this type of software, but the website indicates this mixing software is quite powerful.  :-\

Hi,

EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard Standard is worthwhile software IMO. I was happy to get it in one of these promotions a while back.

I've not had to use it yet, but it's nice to have available if needed. The version I have has three modes: Deleted File Recovery, Complete Recovery, and Partition Recovery.

Regards.

Jibz, if I understand correctly that a simple folder synchronization utility is what your'e after, I can definitely recommend the freeware Karen's Replicator.

http://www.karenware...ols/ptreplicator.asp
Automatically backup files, directories, even entire drives! Karen's Replicator copies selected files from one drive/folder to another. Source and Destination folders can reside anywhere on your network.

It is very easy to setup and use reliably, and it even has scheduling functionality.

No doubt there are more powerful and elaborate tools, but simplicity is the focus here.

Here's a free tool with an alternative approach:  Meerkat - Disk Space Monitor.

http://meerkat.codeplex.com/
Project Description: Meerkat sends admins an email alert whenever a disk runs low on free space. Written in C# .NET, Meerkat is a tiny unintrusive service configured by a separate small GUI. From the GUI you can set which disks to monitor, the free space threshold, who to notify, and the location of an SMTP server. Runs on Windows Server 2000/2003/2008 and Windows XP/Vista. The project is a Visual Studio 2008 project.

Why?: Why write another disk space checker when there's already quite a few out there? I guess there are two categories of checkers - suites like What's Up Gold that perform all sorts of checks and cost plenty of cash, or shareware apps that do exactly what Meerkat does but ask you to pay for it. I couldn't find anything that was simple, small and free. So I wrote Meerkat, and it's been monitoring a variety of servers in the workplace and at home for almost a year now.

Haven't tried it--thankfully I've got plenty of free space on this machine.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Zoner Photo Studio Free
« Last post by sajman99 on August 16, 2010, 04:50 PM »
Yep, the free version of Zoner Photo Studio is pretty nice. I'm not sure it's as great as Gizmo's rates it :-\ (they rate it #1 over XnView and FastStone Image Viewer), but it's plenty good for a free software.

One negative I've noticed so far (and other folks have mentioned this in the Gizmo comments) is that Zoner's thumbnails generation is quite slow. Even with the catalog (aka thumbnails cache) enabled, there is always a lag of 10+ seconds before any thumbnails are displayed.

I haven't used this program in years, but I had a freeware named FreeMeter on my old computer.

IIRC FreeMeter allowed me to configure assorted displays and notifications (including disk space usage), and it provided this info. in the system tray.

http://www.tiler.com/freemeter/features/
Runs on Windows 7, Vista, 2008, 2003, and XP. Works with all language versions. It has not been thoroughly tested on 64-bit versions of Windows, but some users have reported it works.

Regards.

Thanks anyway Curt for the courtesy. :)
