Official Announcements / Re: Upgrading forum Dec 28, 2019
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on December 28, 2019, 11:25 PM »
The site is still not behaving correctly, however, mouser has gone to grab some shut eye so he can hit this with fresh eyes in the morning.

For the moment the server seems to be stabilising but as mentioned earlier there are still some things that shouldn't be happening.

If the website does for offline in the meantime then don't panic because it will be fixed in due course.

That being said, whilst posting this the server SEEMS to be holding up, so let's hope it stays that way so mouser doesn't lose his mind!

N.A.N.Y. 2020 / Only 2 Weeks (appx) Remaining!
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on December 13, 2019, 09:20 PM »
This is a casual reminder that there are only roughly 2 weeks left to post your NANY 2020 Submissions!

Remember, NANY software doesn't need to be huge, it just needs to work!  If you have any idea, big or small, then now is the time to get posting!

To get inspired, why not check out the previous NANY entries?! You can find them here: https://www.donation...pps-for-the-new-year

Also, don't forget that everybody who submits something will receive their very own NANY participant mug!

Let's see what you have got!

T-Clock / Re: How to install
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on December 13, 2019, 09:12 PM »
Before I start, let me add the disclaimer that I am not a user of T-Clock and nor have I actually looked into the Github for more than 10 seconds before posting this.

Now that's out of the way:

The Github seems to be only the source code, and not the compiled version.  This means that anything you get from Github will need you to compile it yourself.

There are installer versions available here: https://www.donation....msg197200#msg197200 - This is if you don't want to/Don't know how to compile it yourself.

----

This is simply to give you a quick answer whilst you wait for somebody more familiar with T-Clock to come along :)

Either they do not accept germans or no temp mail  :-\
Just wanted to drop a "Hi!"

It's probably the temp mail thing - I know plenty of Germans on there haha - If you don't want to use your real email for whatever reason, then just quickly make a throwaway gmail account xD

Also, Welcome back!!!

Not sure how Telegram supersedes Discord for the majority of what people are using it for lol.

A: You don't host the Discord server...so it's really not an issue that it uses them
B: It's free...completely
C: It doesn't need any of your real details (just an email address you can access to verify your account)
D: Completely X-Platform (also available from the browser)
E: Posts are editable by the OP
F: Has Voice, Video and Screen-sharing
G: Channels with the ability to set permissions for each
H: Posts can be deleted by you (or a moderator) at any point you want.
I: Thousands (literally) of bots to choose from (or just make your own)
J: Content can be embedded (links, music, videos, GIFs, images, etc etc)

That's just the stuff I could be bothered typing.

If you're using Discord to chat, then having your stuff hidden from "the NSA" (why would you even care about that?) isn't really an issue...

So yeah, not entirely sure what point is being made  ;D

Yo!

Sorry, been super busy with uni haha

As for "how many languages", I'll leave that up to you - Italian is the only one that matters to me, so anything more is something I wouldn't personally use...but someone else might! :D

Well, it doesn't really need TTS, so this may actually be helpful: https://pdfs.semanti...41c29bc3e63a6212.pdf

The results for RAI (Italian) is the ones I really need - I couldn't care less how long my speech would take in English haha

On a side note: There is utterly no rush with this - I'm not back in university until next year now anyway :D
210
The only "UI" it needs, is a settings window to set your languages (native + chosen foreign), and to change between slow-average-fast (spoken word speed)

Other than that it just needs to spit out an info window with the numbers :D

(Also, it must stay hidden in the tray until called on...I wanna start it with Windows and just ignore it 99.9% of the time lol)

Looking forward to checking it out :)
211
I forgot about this topic lol

I mean "How long it would take to literally speak this segmentr of text, at an average native speaking rate (possibly variable)"

Living Room / Re: Buying a 2TB SSD to replace my 2TB HDD
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on August 17, 2019, 09:33 AM »
It's usually a good idea to try to separate your OS drive from any other files, that way if Windows ever has a hissy fit and decides to die, it doesn't really matter - a quick reinstall of Windows later and you're back in business.  System clones (on a different SSD/HDD) make this even easier because if you keep on top of it (maybe do it weekly or before any major changes) then if Windows dies, you can just plug in your clone drive and get back to what you were doing...wipe the one that Windows crapped out on, then use that one as your new clone drive.
I've tried putting Windows OS on one partition and program files on another - but this is a PITA to keep separated.  There are so many programs that WANT to be on the C drive no matter what, even if you manage to keep some on another drive, there are always others that won't go there.  So, long ago I gave up on that idea and don't split the OS.

I'm thinking of getting a 2TB SSD (if I can get permission for it :) ) and simply clone my HDD to it and swap it out.
@tomos - I only use the D drive to store files for Virtualbox VMs.  I use I and K for files, and C for everything.  I really only partition to make it easier for me to be organized; there's no computing reason behind it at all.

The OS drive should be on it's own drive, not partition...that way if the drive goes bad, the only thing you lose is your OS install which is easy to get back.

I personally have the following setup:

C: 120GB SSD ==OS Drive==: Specifically for the OS, but some other oddball software refuses to install elsewhere so I went with a bit of extra space for those
D: 1TB SSHD ==Data Drive==: HDDs are fine and everything, but this was cheap enough so I figured why not. I use this to store random stuff I haven't sorted through yet.
E: 2TB HDD ==Game Drive==: Purely for game installs
F: 2TB HDD ==Download Drive==: Anything I download gets dumped on this drive, then anything that needs installing gets done so on the appropriate drive
G: 3TB HDD ==Program Files==: I got this drive for super cheap (<£70) so I figured I'd use it for Program Files and other installed things.
H/I: 2x 2TB HDD ==Media Drive==: I have H and I available on my network to share media (Music/Pictures/Movies/TV Shows/etc) to my devices around the house.
M/N: 2x 120GB SSDs ==Backup Drives==: Placed inside the computer for safe storage, but never connected to the power or SATA unless I'm running backups.  One of these is a system clone, the other is for misc backups.

DC Website Help and Extras / Re: Handling spam on forum
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on August 16, 2019, 05:32 PM »
I'm seeing more spam on the forum than ever before, mostly in the morning UK-time, i.e. 5 to 8 hours ahead of US-time.  I wondered if spammers were particularly busy then, vomiting as much as possible in the small hours US-time, hoping for the spam to stay on the forum longer when there perhaps aren't as many moderators about.

You won't see any now (unless it's not from a first-time poster) :)

@everyone
I know I am not such a frequent user as I used to be, but it always feels good to visit. It's like a home away from home (eeehhhh actually I don't have a home any more, since I became a nomad - Hahaha)

Greetings to @mouser and all the lovely people at Donationcoder - one of the best software communities on the web!
same here!

dc has clearly suffered as social media has taken off in past 10 years.  I know what affected me the most...reddit.  and changes in life.  but this is still the OG home!  much more civilized, we are not trying to get points and stuff so we have more honest discussions here.  mousey got married, ha!  anyway, glad to be back.

Nice to have you back!

It is kind of strange - a poster with just one post saying that there ought to be more control over posting!  haha!  He registered on August 5, and is posting today, the 14th.  Maybe he saw a bunch of spam.  I receive the rss feed for new posts and there IS a lot of spam.  Maybe MichaelLal's idea isn't so bad?

To be fair, we catch most spam within a few minutes of it being posted and it gets zapped.

The issue really is that a lot of spammers register then keep the account dormant for months before using it to go crazy with.

The new correct link is: https://www.donation...ng/get-a-license-key

However, the old one (/Keys) does still redirect you here :)
219
Step 1: Create your own version of WhatsApp.
Step 2: Don't include that feature.
Step 3: Upload it to playstore.
Step 4: Install it on your phone.
Step 5: Make a call.

TL;DR:

You don't.
220
I don't know if it's just me (based on my browsing history or other shit google tracks), but the search term "Get a license key" actually brings up DC as the top result.  Is this true for anybody else?
221
Maybe they think Cody is a new Pokémon?

CODYCHU!

Oh, also, Shift+ESC (in chrome), brings up the Chrome-specific task manager (which shows usage of tabs and extensions).
223
Thank you, Stephen66515; I am relieved to hear it's not the entire world, that has been taken over!

... check to see if you haven't been hijacked by a rogue Chrome plugin...
-Stephen66515 (April 18, 2019, 04:16 AM)

I have several times been wondering how to do just that, because my Chrome.exe is using too much CPU for too long, when launched. But in Task Manager all the extensions are also named chrome.exe, so how do I know who is who?

Your best bet is to disable all of your current plugins, and try the search again (after clearing your cache/cookies etc), then turning them back on 1 by 1 and trying to find the culprit.
224
I also just tried several test searches for random things...and not one of them came up with anything unexpected.  The odd advert here and there for something I wouldn't click (which goes away if I turn on my AdBlock), but again, nothing unexpected.
225
I just searched for "Britpop" on Google (via Chrome) and every single result was relevant and I see no ads or anything unrelated, and I went to page 5.

An Image search for the same thing brought up pics of Britpop bands and artists as well as posters and news reports about it.

Further to that...I turned off AdBlock Pro, refreshed, and still see exactly 0 "Sponsored" or unrelated results.

(With and without AdBlock it shows "About 8,500,000 results")

Perhaps you should check to see if you haven't been hijacked by a rogue Chrome plugin or something?
