General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox Nightly Builds : Windows
« Last post by dantheman on July 13, 2015, 07:58 PM »
@MilesAhead,

You may be right! I may be wrong! (sounds like words for a song).  :D
Nightly 64bit seems to be much perkier than what i would expect.
Don't know if it's the new default tab look, but i do like to see them compacted.
This version doesn't like (incompatible with) my default theme FT DeepDark, neither does it like Bing extension (wonder why?), and it told me that Diigo extension might slow it down.

Not bad! 3 out of 24!

"Flash issues" you say?
Having just re-installed my laptop, can't say i've noticed any particular hic with stable.

Have been testing Vivaldi's latest and i find it pretty good.
Still not ready for the road, but it sure looks promising!
More than Windows 10 Edge which won't even have extensions support by official release date of July 29.

Might give that Nightly Build a spin.
If my computer breaks, it's all your fault MilesAhead!  :P

Latest 39 stable is doing good for me.
Don't dabb with betas or nightly versions of FF anymore.
Besides, this fast release cycle hasn't really been doing anything more than frustrating faithful FF users.
Recent Pocket and Hello are a perfect example of Mozilla that no longer seems to know what to do to get back its lost users to Google Chrome. First Australis... then down hill...

Although i do like the new Onenote they offer, i'm not so sure about the rest.
The shareware/freeware i presently have don't all work with Windows 10.
So, i've gone back to Windows 7 for now.

Don't know if you have had a chance to glance at new desktop version in present Windows 10 Preview releases.
Looks nice! Reminds me a bit of Evernote with its preview icons.

At basic level, it's a good alternative to Acronis True Image 11 which is incompatible with Windows 10 Preview.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Panda Free Antivirus 2015 anyone using?
« Last post by dantheman on May 26, 2015, 09:02 PM »
Was recommended to it by a friend at TechSupportAlert.com who uses it for Windows even if he is mostly a Linux user.
But i did use it in the past, especially after dropping AVG and ESET (the later to my regret - but no free version there).
Presently using 360 Total Security (even in light of latest negative press) but that doesn't take away my appreciation for Panda.

BTW, i skip toolbar installation etc. when i do install Panda.

Never had any issues with Panda AV free version.
An occasional ad popup, otherwise very light and pretty fast for scans.

ESET was my fav but have gone over to the "free" side with Panda or 360 Total Security.
Have just re-installed pc and debating between the two.

Don't think it makes much difference between free or shareware AV since from my past experience, they often fail to neutralize attacks all the time or in real time if you prefer.

I find something like MalwareBytes to be the best complimentary asset to conteract nasties.
Would be nice if ESET had a minimum free version though.  :)

Good for you!  :)
Have you tried Opera's latest chromium based?
Here's what GHacks reported in a recent article.

Was wondering about just that this a.m.!
Actually, why Vivaldi didn't do the move yet.
So, Opera beat them to it.

The beta or "next" version should install all Chrome extensions without any hassle.

Maxthon has been a funny adventure.
They've got 4 different browsers and none are finished enough to say they are polished products.
They made this MxNitro 'cause their users voted speed as their top prefered feature in a new browser.
Go figure!

Maybe no.5 will be one with decent addons...

Speed enhancement seems to be the big promise with Windows 10 as per this article, but the free upgrade would appear to go back to Windows 7 only:
"Pour la première fois, Windows 10 sera pendant un an offert comme une mise à jour gratuite pour les utilisateurs des deux versions antérieures, Windows 7 et Windows 8.1."

It's interesting to note that Makulu's dev has recently taken the Ubuntu Unity direction why Linux Mint seems to be planning the opposite. With Ubuntu's ongoing expansion efforts you wonder what Clem has in mind for the long term?

@MilesAhead, didn't know Windows 10 could be installed on old PCs too.
If so, then that would be a first for sure!

As expected, this latest LM distro has its quirks too.
Tweaking Linux distros i find almost endless compared to what you can do with Windows.

What is nice with LinuxMint and Ubuntu is that they work pretty well out of the box, have drivers for most important peripherals and can thus revive old PCs for a few more "miles ahead".  :P

Ya, and i was almost first to post on LM's blog too!
Have been patiently waiting for this version.
Always liked LinuxMint and Clem sure is doing an excellent job!

Not sure if this is an issue but CPU has been hanging around 50C

Otherwise, this distro was a piece of cake to install and it is truly fast!!

True, but we all can see the need of an occasional fable...
The other day i went looking of a song i enjoyed as a young boy, something that had the words "sunshine, lollipops and rainbows everywhere." A childish song for sure, but as a boy it just uplifted my heart and filled it with joy as i contemplated a blue sky on my uncles backyard swing.

I don't know how people can spend their time watching stories about living dead... must be true stories since these programs are almost everywhere on tv.

Not that i believe in the scientificity of it all but i did enjoy some like:
30. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
Helps us to keep things in perspective.

Then again, do you believe in the scientificity of all the information the mainstream medias bash out at us everyday?

Living Room / Stuff you need to know
« Last post by dantheman on March 10, 2015, 08:01 AM »
A friend fooled me with the title of this composition.
What did you think it was about?

Stuff you need to know

1. Your shoes are the first thing people subconsciously notice
 about you. Wear nice shoes.

 2. If you sit for more than 11 hours a day, there's a 50% chance
you'll die within the next 3 years.

 3. There are at least 6 people in the world who look exactly like
you. There's a 9% chance that you'll meet one of them in your lifetime.

 4. Sleeping without a pillow reduces back pain and keeps your
 spine stronger.

 5. A person’s height is determined by their father, and their
weight is determined by their mother.

 6. If a part of your body "falls asleep", You can almost always
"wake it up" by shaking your head.

 7. There are three things the human brain cannot resist noticing
 - food, attractive people and danger.

 8. Right-handed people tend to chew food on their right side

 9. Putting dry tea bags in gym bags or smelly shoes will absorb
 the unpleasant odor.

 10. According to Albert Einstein, if honey bees were to disappear
from earth, humans would be dead within 4 years.

 11. There are so many kinds of apples, that if you ate a new one
everyday, it would take over 20 years to try them all.

 12. You can survive without eating for weeks, but you will only
 live 11 days without sleeping.

 13. People who laugh a lot are healthier than those who don’t.

 14. Laziness and inactivity kills just as many people as smoking.

 15. A human brain has a capacity to store 5 times as much
 information as Wikipedia.

 16. Our brain uses the same amount of power as a 10-watt light
 bulb!!

 17. Our body gives enough heat in 30 mins to boil 1.5 liters of
 water!!

 18. The Ovum egg is the largest cell and the sperm is the
 smallest cell !!

 19. Stomach acid (conc. HCl) is strong enough to dissolve razor
 blades!!

 20. Take a 10-30 minute walk every day & while you walk, SMILE.
 It is the ultimate antidepressant.

 21. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.

 22. When you wake up in the morning, pray to ask God's guidance
 for your purpose, today.

 23. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less
food that is manufactured in plants.

 24. Drink green tea and plenty of water. Eat blueberries,
 broccoli, and almonds.

 25. Try to make at least three people smile each day.

 26. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires,
issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control.
Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.

 27. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner
like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.

 28. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

 29. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Forgive them
 for everything.

 30. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

 31. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

 32. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.

 33. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what
 their journey is all about.

 34. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

 35. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five
 years, will this matter?'

 36. Help the needy, Be generous! Be a 'Giver' not a 'Taker'

 37. What other people think of you is none of your business.

 38. Time heals everything.

 39. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

 40. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your
 friends will. Stay in touch.

 41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

 42. Each night before you go to bed, pray to God and be thankful
for what you accomplished, today .

 43. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.

Now: Forward this to your friends to help them lead a happier and
 healthier life...

Just installed StartPage plugin for FARR and it is working fine. Just as good as DDG for sure!
But, not as quick as Bing desktop search app.
It's okay.

Didn't want to override you on anything Waith808.
I saw various posts but none that were specific that i was thinking of.
Although it is relatively easy to set DDG as search engine on Vivaldi, i haven't tried it on Google Chrome.

DDG is improving (can't say that much for Yahoo).

We all know how Google made its way to fame and fortune.
We also know that is no longer as "good" as we once thought it was or would be...

How about considering DuckDuckGo as an alternative for better privacy, "open source" as well as a community oriented service? https://duck.co/

That was a full course meal Ian!
A web clipper add-on like Evernotes' for Firefox would be a nice addition.

Thanks again!
