Jaspers, right!  It's coming back.

Would the mold would only grow locally?

I might even have a copy kicking around (if I move the boxes with unfiled books which are stacked in front of the "G-K" shelves).  One way or another, I'll be re-reading this sometime in the next few months...

Chat? What chat?

Oh, there's a "Chat!" tab up top (and it's Chat!, not just Chat), so I better click it.

There's a Frank Herbert book called The Santaroga Barrier.  From a review:

"...the story of Gilbert Daesin, a UC Berkley psychologist during a visit to a Northern California community nestled in the fictional Santaroga Valley. Daesin was hired by a conglomerate of businesses to go into the valley and find out why no chain stores survive there; every time one is opened, it died in a very short time for a near total lack of customers. There was something about the Santarogans that made them able to avoid marketing messages, and the corporations wanted to find out what it was and kill it."

IIRC, it was something in the local soil and thus local crops which made locals unable to lie.  The Want Ads were a hoot, since everyone told the truth.

AutoHotkey / Re: Can AHK cut/paste excel cells into fields of another program?
« Last post by AndyM on November 15, 2010, 06:27 PM »
don't forget about VBA - depending on what you're other application was it may also do what you want
or a combination of vba and autohotkey.  unless the app you are pasting into is an Office app, in which case VBA alone might be easier.

Do you automatically want to do all the rows in the table, or are you going thru the table and selecting the rows whose cells you want to copy and paste, or do you want to hit a hotkey every time  you see a row you want to copy?

---------------------

Your level of expertise is at least equal to mine, and I've had no problem teaching myself enough VBA and AutoHotkey to do this sort of stuff.  You'll have less trouble than I did.

TaskTracker

http://tasktracker.w...rdwisesolutions.com/

Is it freeware? I don't see any license or purchase info.
No, it's $30.  At least I think that's what the cost is after clicking 5 or so links.

I used TaskTracker for several years and it worked well and served a real purpose for me.  Things changed and I didn't move it to my new machine.  I don't think I paid anywhere near $30 for it.  If I needed it again I'd look for a cheaper way first.

It doesn't work inside the Open/Save dialogs, but it does group file types across your directory tree.  It does that well.

General Software Discussion / Outlook Sort/Group question
« Last post by AndyM on November 03, 2010, 08:59 PM »
I own a copy of Outlook, came with Office XP (2002).  I use Outlook Express for my email, but I'm going thru several hundred emails given to me in a .pst file.  I figured I'd be better off loading it into Outlook and keeping those messages separate from my own email.

Outlook is easy enough to figure out, but I'm not able to do something I'm accustomed to (and find quite useful) in Outlook Express.

I want to group/thread the messages by subject, but sort the threads by earliest date.  So a thread that started in 2006 would display before a thread that started in 2007.  But each thread would be together, either sorted internally by date/time, or threaded if there were multiple replies to various messages in the thread.

This is easy to do in Outlook Express: View>Current View>Group by Conversation in order to group by subject, and then click the "Recieved" header in order to sort the conversations chronologically.

I want to do the same thing in Outlook:  Group the messages by subject, but display the groups in chronological order.  Right now the best I can do is sort the groups alphabetically, so a 2010 group can come before a group of 2006 msgs if it's subject starts with an "A" as opposed to a "Z".

What happens if you change themes?

It's just effective marketing, which is about manipulating minds (a good product just makes that easier but is plainly not required).  The system selects mostly by money, which is accumulated mostly by effective marketing.

But I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.
213
If you had two or three machines sitting right there, you could be looking at some of the Networx data while you started and stopped different combinations of streams and downloads on the machines.  Might give you a feel for what's happening in real time.
214
I'm pretty sure Networx (free) will give you the info you want

One corrupted document would have been too easy  :-[

I'm pretty sure the page numbering and toc numbering uses the same numbering system as the field numbering or automatic list numbering.  Also, the problems I refer to were re Word 2002 and maybe 2003.  I don't know if MS fixed it in 2007 or 2010.

When you view the actual page number fields, do you see anything unusual?  I was going to ask you about your toc, but I realize I don't remember enough of what I learned when I was doing them, and I never did that many.  I did do some tweaking using styles.  It might be worth checking that all your headers have the same style/styles however you intended.

Sorry if this one is too obvious - are you editing the document on different computers with different printers?

Have you asked about this in one of the microsoft.public.word newsgroups (microsoft.public.word.numbering or microsoft.public.word.formatting.longdocs - there's a proper way to cross-post)?  The old newsgroups are still being maintained, just not on microsoft servers.  I use nntp.aioe.org.  The "official" microsoft newsgroups, where I think most of the MVPSs hang out, still exist with a web interface, try http://social.answer.../category/officeword
I haven't used them since I haven't had a problem sufficient to register and open an account.  I think maybe you do.

217
I've seen a lot written about corrupted Word docs, but I haven't read much carefully since I've never had one.  I do remember that list numbering was often the culprit.

Are all these problems happening with the same document, or versions of the same document?
218
After a careful analysis of the various methods I've used to maintain numbered
lists in Word, I found the greatest statistical correlation with success to be
the following factors, in descending order of importance:

  - always wear my lucky socks
  - good posture
  - keep coffee:beer ratio between 2:1 and 2.5:1
219
saving-as with different filenames each time i make a non-trivial change, so i can always go back to an older version

golden advice!

superboyac, I feel your pain, having had experiences similar to Mousers'.  Any chance it has to do with eliminating a Section Break?  I still haven't quite gotten my head around which Section's settings prevail when you delete an adjacent Section Break.  Did you delete one when you were fooling with the headers/footers?

Unfinished Requests / Re: IDEA: Copy and Paste from a txt file to a directory
« Last post by AndyM on October 22, 2010, 08:55 PM »
Just to clarify, you can copy files from a command prompt?

So when you type at a command prompt:

       copy "c:\a\1.mp3" "My Computer\Insignia KIX\Fixed storage"

you get a copy of 1.mp3 in the Fixed Storage folder?

If that's so, then Sleeping Wolf's approach would be a way to go.

also check

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

and

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\AltStart

I don't think addins get put here (Local Settings is a hidden folder):

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Office

It's just that Microsoft puts stuff in lots of places, so as long as I'm making a list....

Often when I write, I make lists.  I number the lists manually.

out of curiousity, what software do you use to write the lists?

You could just make a file with your often used objects and drag and drop from there.

If you copy an object to your clipboard, you can just click and Ctrl-V to your heart's content.

Check out

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\Shell

This is where you can add context menu items to all files.  I've added three over the years.  Two of them call batch files (one to reset the selected files' attribute bit, one to create a backup of the selected files) and one calls an .exe file which copies the selected file's full path to the clipboard.

Each menu entry is a key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\Shell which includes the menu name and the executable file to call.
