Adding to rjbull's previous comment... one of the reasons note taking software programs started using a tree-hierarchy is because it is convienient and is a good way of displaying data.  There will always be a need for rigid tree structures.  It's just that they should be supplemented with filters etc.  I think a filterable tree structure would be a great complement.

Ways of finding data:
- You know what you want and where to find it
- You know what you want but not where to find it (search)
- You dont know what you want and you dont know where to find it (browse, bookstores are great for this!)
- You dont konw what you want but you know where you want to look.

Trees are good for the first way.  Filterable trees would work for most of the other ways.  Combine the two and you have a very powerful program.  The idea is not to give up on structure, but to allow multiple ways in the SAME program.

This may not fall into the scope of this program, but what about a color coordinator?  I've seen various ones for website design... the features already in place are handy, but having some additional features for picking a scheme would be pretty cool.

A quick comment:  you and I are on similar pages superboyac.  I agree with your primary needs and also your admitting that there are other needs out there.  Have you looked at NeoMem (http://www.neomem.org)?  I dont use it because it is deficient in some areas but it is an interesting example of an information manager.  Like you said before (I think it was you), we want our cake and eat it too.  This genre could be so powerful... it's just so hard to fit everything in!

I mostly agree with you... except I think that trees should still be an option.  If you're trying to write a book or write an outline you want only certain nodes in a certain order.  The final implentation should allow both.  You should be able to throw things in, but then "hard assign" them as needed (they would still be in the database pool for other groupings, but that one group would always contain it).

Sorry if I misunderstand your sentence here, but I'm interpreting it as you want to know more. (?)  If you already know or have since found out, please disregard this post!

If you go into the Keynote options, there is a whole panel for clipboard capture.  Basically Keynote watches the clipboard and captures the clip as it comes in.  There are some format modifying that can be done, and then the clip is sent straight to the active Tab in a new note.  My main problem is that the new node cannot be named on the fly.  Even if a dialog box popped up that you could type the name in would make it more useful in my opinion.

I like where this discussion is going... because I too am in favor of the note-side of things!  Real quick note:  Keynote did have capturing capability.  It was a fledgling start but compared to many other apps of it's time it was special.

But, I have to jump back on my soapbox, sorry!  Note programs need to be able to store and relate information... this ought to be the primary function.  I should be able to build very rigid structures (a la Keynote) but I should also be able to build weak relationships and strengthen them over time.  And now, before I go off on a wild-eyed tangential dream (and repeat myself!)... I go.

Tags are what note taking programs need most!  I use Opera M2 for email and they use a database approach to email also.  It's awesome to just create a filter and look at the mail that fits the criteria... no moving, no hassle.  Note taking software ought to allow the user to throw stuff in, make a few connections, then allow the user to go back edit those relationships and create new ones.  The same bit of information should be able to be viewed from anywhere the user determines it's useful.  That's the biggest problem with Keynote now (though i still use it everyday!).  I have posted on this subject so much I'm probably boring those who have seen it before, but this is one feature that note-taking programs should implement soon!  Take a look at Novo Libero, or Neomem for examples of programs going this route.  TreeDBNotes has a limited function called password/contacts which mimics in those two special cases... they ought to expand it.  They already use a database backend, let's use it!!

Just saw XpAssociate over at shellcity and gave it a quick try.  It's not bad... does what it claims!  While the overall GUI is not too impressive, the tree pane is pretty cool because of the "quick filter" at the top.  Give it a try!  mouser,  I thought of your recent treks into hierarchical structures when I saw it... pretty nifty idea!

Heh heh... it's only a matter of time.  There are a bunch on the site though that are supposed to work on 9.  I'm still using 8.5 at home (9 at work though)... I just can't justify using it since I use Opera for my email.  I don't want to hose something because I used a preview version!

Also, just to avoid confusion, this plug-in is NOT strictly for coders.  Anyone who has a lot of data in Excel files and wants to sort will find this useful.  It's supposed to be user-friendly... supposed to be!

IF you downloaded before 12PM EST (10 FEB 06) please redownload... I forgot a function!

Pros:
- Sort using natural sort order (10 comes after 9!)
- Sort on cell color
- Sort on font color
- Sort on more than 3 columns or column colors at a time
- Casse sensitive option (all sort columns or individually)
- Ascending or descending sorts on any individual column
- Keeps many cell formating features (cell color, font color, indent 
level, number format)

Cons:
- Slower than excel native sort (mainly in applying the formatting... 
sorting is actually pretty quick).
- Can't sort horizontal (I have no need to do this).
- Cell formatting has no options (unless you edit the script!)

Install:
- Download the file and change the extension from "txt" to "xla"
- Put the xla file where you can find it.
- Open Excel and go to Tools -> Add Ins.
- A GUi will appear.  Go down the list until you find "NaturalSort" and 
put a check in the box next to it.  Click ok.
- A toolbar should load with an icon and the word "sort."

Usage/Syntax:

There are three main ways to enter the sort and they depend on your current 
selection. Click the sort button on the new toolbar.
* If you have one cell selected, the script assumes you want to select the 
entire used sheet (sorting one cell would be pretty dumb!).
- An input box comes up that asks for the number of header rows.  This is 
your chance to NOT sort the rows at the top of your sheet!  If you have 4 
rows of header and your information starts on row 5, enter a 4 in the 
box.  If you have no header rows, enter a 0.  The script will check every 
column to determine the last USED column and last USED row.  These, then, 
define the selection.
- The main sort input box comes up... see below.

* If you have selected ONE row with multiple columns, you are asked for the
number of header rows as above, then the script chooses the max number
of used rows in JUST those columns.  The main sort input box comes up...
see below.

* If you have selected a region that is more than one row, the sort only 
applies to the selection and the main sort input box comes up... see below.


The Main Sort Input Box.
This is where you decide how you want things sorted.  The syntax is as 
follows:

a,b,c or A,B,C or 1,2,3 are all acceptable column designations.  Just be 
sure they are comma delimited!!  The order you put them in determines sort 
order.

@ :tells the script to ignore formatting... sorts data values ONLY!  This 
symbol can go anywhere in the input string (beginning or end make sense, 
but are not necessary).

^ :tells the script to sort Descending (ascending is default).  If this 
symbol is BEFORE the ENTIRE string (ie, ^a,d,f) then descending sort is 
applied to ALL sort columns.  If the symbol is placed AFTER an INDIVIDUAL 
column (ie, a,d^,f,i^), it applies ONLY to that column.

% :tells the script to NOT sort case sensitively.  It follows the same
conventions as ^ above with regard to all sort columns vs individual
sort columns.

(a) :tells the script to sort on the cell color in column "a."

{a} :tells the script to sort on the font color in column "a."

Some Syntax examples:

@k,(a)^,b
Ignore formatting, sort on k, descending sort on a's cell color, sort on b

(a),{a},%a
Sort on a's cell color, a's font color, and a's case-insensitive value

a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j
Sort on a bunch of columns!  Don't know why you'd do this... but maybe you 
have a lot of data!


Support:
I will NOT be very supportive!  If a bug is found I will try to correct 
it.  If functionality is requested that I think I would find useful I may 
try to implement it.  Bottom line is that this script is written for me by 
me and I have "real work" (hardware engineering) to do and I make it a 
point not to code at home!  Feel free to modify things on your own, or ask 
for how I implemented things.  I will try to help there.

Credit:
I must give credit to one site in particular since I used their VBA 
quicksort routine... then modified it to work with my natural sort 
algorithm.  Specifics are changed but the overall structure is the same.   
Go to http://www.vba-programmer.com/ and do a search for quicksort.  To 
sort on more than 4 columns I iteratively call the Two Column Quicksort (I 
ALWAYS have one column numbered in the current sort order so I don't lose 
current order (ie, if I sort on the same columns back-to-back I get the 
same sort... without this numbering scheme I get a different sort 
everytime due to how the quicksort works.).).

Another cool tool (though it isn't the Cat's Meow!) is an auditing add-in I found yesterday.  Go to http://vangelder.orcon.net.nz/ go to his Excel page (using the bar on the left) and look for "AudXL 1.10 Add-In."  I dont like the way it formats formulas, but it's a cool idea and has given me some of my own.  Excel is extremely powerful, a cheaper replacement than MatLab in any event!

Incidentally, if anyone is tired of the Excel sort order I am almost finished with a module that does a natural sort in excel.  It can also sort by cell or font color and allows more than four columns (no real limit...).  Let me know,

Is the qsort an API call?  Does it do a natural sort?  Or does it sort like Excel by default 0,1,10,2,3,4,5 etc?  (Natural sort would go 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10)
