Living Room / Re: Soliciting feedback on website

Thanks for having a look, mouser. I think they're planning to list it on one of those For-Sale-By-Owner sites, which will allow them to post the url.

The whole thing is sort of crazy - my Dad is turning 70 this year, and his dad built this house (or part of it) 61 years ago. So neither of my parents have ever bought or sold a house.

Living Room / Soliciting feedback on website
« Last post by ayryq on May 29, 2015, 08:24 AM »
Hi,
My parents are selling ("by owner") their home in Peoria, IL, and they asked me to create a website for them. They supplied the text and the pictures; I made the single-page site.

I'd appreciate any feedback on how it looks on your browser and screen size, how it seems to be organized, or if anything seems to be missing or broken.

I'm not a "real" programmer; I made it all in notepad++ with a few jquery plugins.

Thanks

General Software Discussion / Re: Free Simple RSS Editor
« Last post by ayryq on May 29, 2015, 07:33 AM »
I used to maintain an RSS feed; I used Notepad++. Once you've got the first story in there, it's pretty simple to copy the code for the next story. Of course, mine updated weekly, which isn't very often, and very little changed from week to week - it was a church service audio podcast, so I mostly had to change the date in a couple filenames.

Here's one I found that might do the job:

Edit: There's an XML plugin for notepad++ — I haven't used it but it may make generating rss code simpler.

I bought this during the Steam winter sale. My 6-year old loves it. It's great with a touch-screen, especially. He can get the "easy" and some of the "medium" puzzles. It's from the same guy who made "The Incredible Machine" back in the day. You should see some of the "contraptions" that people have submitted - the detail and intricacy boggles the mind.

News like this makes me frustrated. Out-of-the-box, Pale Moon doesn't support, for example SSL3 because it's not secure. But guess what, my bank uses it still. So I have to disable security features in my browser so that I can go on doing business. None of the browser updates in the world will help if the effect is broken websites, so people have to set up security exceptions (and security exception or policy changes have to be permitted, because otherwise users get PO'd at the browser, NOT the server). And you get into a habit of clicking "Allow" any time it asks (much like windows security prompts). Which is the same as no security at all.

Practically speaking, people don't know--or care--what sort of security websites use. It just better work. But the burden is on server admins to get it fixed, so browsers can stop supporting vulnerable technologies without making everybody angry.

Try printing it as one long PDF, and then upload to http://www.splitpdf.com/ —notice the "more" button to get multiple splits.

For me, Opalcalc sits nicely between the input complexity of the calculator (infix or postfix? Do I start with a number and apply a trig function to it, or start with the function as if I were writing the formula on paper? How do I get at the stats functions again?) and the big iron of the fullblown spreadsheet, and it needs me to have a full-size keyboard I can use with it without having to grope for symbols.

And some of the things it can do would need Google, otherwise. How many days to Christmas? (@ 25 dec 2015 - @ today as whole days) What's $15 in euro? ($15 as euro) How many centimetres in 12 fathoms? (12 fathoms as cm)

Now I'm thinking "this sounds like a FARR plugin." How cool if you could use the syntax from Opal in FCalc?

And the developer is still tinkering with it, and that $15 is a lifetime license. Personally, I think it's worth every cent. But then, I'm a bit weird.
You—and most of the community here at DC—are not typical in your willingness to pay for software you find useful.

UrlSnooper / Re: How to download from multiple bitrate/resolutions?
« Last post by ayryq on May 16, 2015, 03:53 PM »
I've never used URLSnooper, so this is a stab in the dark.

I would try guessing. Is there anything in the url that indicates size or quality? If so, change it. videofile-240.mpg becomes videofile-720.mpg for example.

Here is the jwplayer info on multiple streams. Looks like there's some sort of ".smil" file which will contain the list of available options. Maybe try to find that file on the server?

just btw:

He suggests that an easy alternative to using the "+" (shift + "=") symbol is to simply press the "#" key - not sure what keyboard layout makes that easier.

on the qwertz keyboard (German language), the '#' key is easily accessible without qualifier keys
I tried to figure out why this would be - I found an answer in the British keyboard: Shift+3 gives you £ - a necessary character there, and so an extra key was added, making the enter key smaller, to still have #. In German it looks like Shift+3 gives you § . Not sure what use they have for that, seems like a € would be more useful.

I used shared hosting at bluehost. I'm not at all sure "Let's Encrypt" will be available for shared hosts. To buy a certificate through bluehost, I'd have to have a dedicated IP ($3.99 / month). Then, the cheapest option (no subdomains except for www) is $4.99 / month (from Comodo). To get all subdomains it's $12.42 / month. But I have several different TLDs I use for different things.

So my total cost per year is $47.88 + $59.88 per TLD = $107.76/year for one domain with no subdomains. This is substantially more than the cost of hosting.

And as Stoic Joker points out, it's not at all certain that SSL really would stop a malicious government, for example.

Living Room / Re: Implications of a global market on random success
« Last post by ayryq on May 16, 2015, 07:07 AM »
So here's a semi-off-topic reply. I was thinking about the advantages of homogeneity. And while the article was really more about the poor process that leads some song/show/game to become popular, I was thinking about the effect of having a universally popular or known song/show/game rather than fragmentation.

Thinking of TV, I guess I'm comparing the situation today to that when I was a child, and there were four or so networks in everyone's home. You could go to work, and everyone would have watched "the game" or Bob Newhart or MacGyver or whatever, and there was a shared cultural (if I use the term broadly) experience. Similar, I'd like to think, to the folks in Cliffski's article who all heard the same lutenist.

Now I go to the barber and the conversation goes like this:
"So have you seen {random Netflix show}"
"No. But I was watching {random other Netflix show}. Have you seen it?"
"No."
"How about this weather?"

So I'm happier when I'm consuming media - I'm watching what I want, on my terms, because of the huge profusion of choice. But I miss the opportunity to connect with other people as a result.

Likewise, my sister-in-law is a gamer. It is literally the only thing she and I have in common. And I follow RockPaperShotgun often enough I can engage with her in conversation. But we have very rarely played the same game. Yesterday I opened "Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight" and "Cities:Skylines." She posted on Twitter about NBA2k, a game I can't really talk intelligently about.

So I think to some extent the segmentation of media (for example on Steam, as mentioned by Cliffski) has served to segment people. And I'm not sure that's all good. Maybe if we all played flappy bird we could connect a little better with fellow humans, instead of (as I'm likely to do) feeling smug and superior for making better, less popular choices.

Anyway, that's not exactly what he was talking about, but the article was a jumping-off point for all those thoughts.

I guess it might not be the most traditional looking calculator, but I discovered OpalCalc here

Wow, at least from the screenshots that looks very handy. And as for "power under the hood"... I didn't even know there were different kinds of modulus. He suggests that an easy alternative to using the "+" (shift + "=") symbol is to simply press the "#" key - not sure what keyboard layout makes that easier. I poked around the site to see if I could guess, but all I found was that the author is a really eclectic, interesting person. He's got a program that converts any picture to sound, for example.

I'm not sure how many licenses OpalCalc is going to sell at $15, though, even with evangelists such as yourself.

Living Room / Re: Gadget WEEKENDS

Does this count as a gadget? I always have a pencil or two in my pocket, and I get holes in my pockets. This is a cap for a pencil, with a built-in sharpener.
It works on any pencil, but it's best on a shorter one. My plan is to find another solution for multiple pencils (bic pen cap, maybe?), but having the sharpener along is sure handy.

They make beautiful metal versions; I bought the $12.99 plastic one.

I found techdirt through the list here on DC and often find interesting articles there. This one had some good points that I hadn't thought of. I have quite a few https sites that "seem" broken because the domain (mine) doesn't match the certificate (box-something-or-other.bluehost.com). I'm with you, though, I'm serving random content to basically myself, so why bother? Although it would be nice when I set up an email client, I only have to click "remember this exception" once.

I'm a nerd, though, so if it's free, I'll probably do it. But free is exactly how much it is worth to me to have a REAL certificate. Not $419 for sure!

Since it turned it to that sort of thread, the calculator I've used for years is Calcute (http://calcute.com/).

Most of the time, I admit, FarrCalc is enough, so I just use that.

Microsoft Streets and Trips had that function.

I just got a notification from you, tomos. I had just whitelisted the address cranioscopical provided (I use SpamAssassin through bluehost). So probably that was the problem.

I have SpamAssassin set to automatically delete. One of the perils of having my real email address all over the whois registry is spam volume.

Thanks,

Thank you, glad it's so simple (so long as I don't need that feature!)

Let me know if I can help with further testing.

I'm using the 32-bit version for addon compatibility.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Pale Moon\palemoon.exe"

edit: I tried it on my other PC, running windows 7 and pale moon 25.1.0 (x86), with the same result (garbage url being opened by browser).

OK, found a workaround in SC preferences.
Basic Capturing -> Capture Options -> untick "retrieve and store URL string from browser..."

Now it works fine.

If I click the "notify" link in the blue bar at bottom right, I get a message "Are you sure you wish to disable notification of new replies for this topic?"

So I presume the forum knows I'm supposed to get them. And the "Notify me of replies" box is ticked as I type this.
