Apple Computer.jpg

For every positive thing people say about Jobs, I can list at least one negative. For me, his legacy will be one of suing every other company on the planet ad infinitum and taking the patent mess to a power of 10. Fifty-six seems young these days, but quite a few Foxconn workers never lived that long (and don't tell me Foxconn isn't an 'Apple' company, since 90% of its business is from Apple). I've already seen people all over the web today attributing quotes to Jobs that others' have written (Steve Brand, being one). Yikes. Google has a link under its search box today. I guess that's classy.

This is why I love Brazil these days; they tell the truth:

Brazil Drafts An 'Anti-ACTA': A Civil Rights-Based Framework For The Internet
http://www.techdirt....ework-internet.shtml

One of the striking features of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement is that it is mainly being signed by Western/“developed” countries – with a few token players from other parts of the world to provide a fig-leaf of nominal inclusiveness. That's no accident: ACTA is the last-gasp attempt of the US and the EU to preserve their intellectual monopolies – copyright and patents, particularly drug patents – in a world where both are increasingly questioned.

Carol's anger is righteous. It's 2011 and the planet, countries, currency, and economies are more connected than ever in history. Virtually every gadget is made in China, so there's no good reason for it to cost more, not even £12 or £25. I order things from the UK all the time and I get the VAT removed at checkout. It's silly.

G+ Stream Pause
https://chrome.googl...cjfcfcmkoeldfobapohe

This one works great, and I've no idea why Google doesn't include a simple function like this to start with. It pauses your stream with universal PAUSE/PLAY symbols on your toolbar. Now you can read a longer post, extended comments, or compose a comment yourself without new posts continuously bouncing your cursor point offscreen.

CAVEAT: This extension pauses -- or rather freezes -- your entire stream "page," temporary disabling G+'s autopagination. Reactivate the stream and the "More Entries" bar at the bottom works again.

Great article because some things you want to really really try, and then hope they're as good as advertised. If so, fine. If not, I don't want to pay to give it back. Now if only more stores would bring like Layaway like Walmart recently did.

Replies and More for G+
https://chrome.googl...jhchgcjlfldjiepcfpea

Improve the G+ reply mechanism immensely by grabbing the Replies and More Google+ Chrome extension. The extension puts links throughout G+ that let you reply to the author of any post or comment with a single click -- and without all the "+"-typing hassle. This one actually allowed me to drop two other extensions since it did a better job.

Good points mahesh. PCs are for production (and anything else), whereas gadgets like phones and tablets are mostly content consumption devices.

Women in Tech and Media
https://plus.google....35/posts/AQjL31jgUX8

A thriving online community is the product of the people participating, the content being shared, and the technology that makes it all possible. For me, the active women on Google+, particularly those who live tech and media, play a major role in my stream. I'm happy to share with you a list of active women on Google+ who make tech, talk tech, or live tech.

Plus Minus makes Google+ rock. It lets you select which Circles show up in your Google+ Stream, allows you to easily mark individual or all posts as read, offers a wide-screen view so you can see more content without scrolling, and loads more posts automatically as you scroll down.

General Software Discussion / Re: Couldn't be more disappointed in Windows 8 :(
« Last post by zridling on September 26, 2011, 12:24 PM »
I have used my CR-48 Chromebook as my only computer for many months now.  I don't miss my PC one bit.  My next device will be a Tablet because I can do 95% of everything that matters to me.... <> Most of what I do is consumption.  When I feel like creating a blog post, I can always dock it to a keyboard.

I'm just about there, Proximo. I want either a Chromebook or tablet next year (probably a Sept. '12) simply because my current machine is old and most of what I do is content consumption, not creation. I'll keep this one for that. Frankly, I'd like to have a tablet I could take to breakfast, since there's almost no newspapers sold in print form in my town anymore. And on the lazy side, it'd be nice to have one when watching something on TV, for either stats, reviews, or to see their YouTube vids. I wouldn't do Windows, but it's great that Win8 is fully ready for the mobile/tablet side.

Change the motivational to any social platform you want; G+ is no exception except it doesn't have corporations (yet). But it will eventually.

Look around folks: software lost. A very few mega-corporations control your computing, even your access to data and information. Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Apple, AT&T, Nokia, etc. Uninstall your browsers and play those games by yourselves and then see how much fun "computing" is.

-- You buy Apple, you're buying all in.
-- You buy Microsoft, you're buying lock-in, and with Win8, that too, means you're all in for Redmond.
-- Linux gives you a few choices, but given that most people use their computer to access and share information, the OS is a forgotten layer (as it should be).

By locking (the Win8) OS to the hardware, they also get to prevent anyone from running an older version of Windows. Like Apple, maybe the only way to get Windows in the future will be to buy a new machine.

Living Room / Re: A Religion for the 21st Century!

Given that patent wars are grinding innovation to a halt -- at least sucking an increasingly larger amount of money out of innovation, the GPL doesn't seem so bad. (Unless you're Steve Jobs and wondering how to take all those billions with you.)
219
The problem Microsoft is introducing with Win8 is that it will wall-off Windows 8 not only from Linux, but from earlier versions of Windows from being dual-booted thanks to its UEFI. This effectively locks the machine down and out and turns it into an Apple-like brick. As someone said, "there goes the 'personal' in PCs." Maybe firmware hackers will suddenly make a lot of money! But you'll also being buying a dead box -- no new graphics cards, no new network cards, or any other upgrades unless provided a signing key by Microsoft. As Carol points out, Microsoft is saying OEMs don’t have to go along with the Win8 license; they just have to do it if they want to sell PCs with Windows on them. Paging the anti-trust lawyers!

Macs have about 5% of the desktop market and Linux hangs in at 1-3% depending on how you measure it, so hardware manufacturers can't help but go along with Microsoft's craziness here. What's confusing is that if Linux only has 1% of the market, why lockdown the machine at boot level? How do they see themselves threatened by a Linux desktop "market" that persistently hovers at 1% share? Maybe the reason is that they want to force the Metro UI on users, which in turn might help Windows mobile/tablet sales over Android. It's not Apple they hate, it's Linux. Thus the emulation of Apple in response to Google and Android.

unity-multiple-desktop.jpg
Ubuntu's Unity desktop (four workspaces).

Centralization of distros will put linux in same queue as that of apple and windows. There will be more people unsatisfied with the choices made by council before final OS release, take example of ubuntu unity window manger move or monthly release move. So my view is that it doesn't matter which distro user is running on desktop. They need apps to get their work done. Non-developers are concerned about getting work done and developers are interested in platform stability and ease of development. Linux has ability to balance this need without losing any popularity factor.
You'll never see that centralization either. At least you hope not. It's just not needed. You already have most desktop users running (1) Debian/Ubuntu/Mint, (2) Fedora, (3) openSUSE, or (4) Arch under two (app) installers. If you've used one, you could use any other without a learning curve.

There is also a huge inertia in the software market. How many professional products (such as photo/graphics or video editing, or a decent word processor/DTP) are available for Linux? And who writes games for Linux?
They're coming, but they need more developers (who as you say, can code for more users!). I've been doing some HD video editing with OpenShot and it's very smooth.

Until corporate users and power users can use some of their past investment in a Linux environment they are going to be more than reluctant to move. If you have worked for years with Qurk as your publishing package and can no longer even open Quark files why would you consider changing to Linux. Mac maybe since Windows/Mac both have compatible product catalogues (MS Office, Adobe, Quark etc.)
What you're working in has become a niche market! All I need an OS for as an end user is to get me to the cloud, to my browser, and from there I can do the rest in HTML5 and beyond. Adobe is still building 20th century apps.

Maybe Ballmer/Sinofsky think that by making Win8 more exclusive, more people will want it?

If Walmart was smart, it would set up a counter station in each electronics department just to sell computers.
(1)... "You want no OS? Here, take your machine and go."
(2)... "You want Windows installed? Give me $$$ and wait a few minutes, thank you!"

Under #1 they make pure profit off the hardware. Under #2 they make more money off of Windows customers. Win-win.

Carlo Daffara's well-argued and brave riposte to Richard Stallman's Android FUD attempt.
http://carlodaffara....ree-and-generic-fud/
______________________________
I hate FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) whether it is spelled from proponents of proprietary software or free software loyalist. I hate it because it uses half-truths, innuendo and emotional traps to prevent readers to form their own opinion using rational means.

Having said that, I have been already skeptical of the previous attempt of the FSF to declare that the GPLv2 is “dangerous” because it has no explicit reinstatement clause, piggybacking on posts by popular Android doomsayers that (wrongly) claimed that Android tablet vendors “lost their rights to the Linux kernel”. Now, RMS clearly aimed with bigger guns at Android, that is clearly irking to his freedom-loving personality and probably seen as a plague barely better than Windows. In doing so, he unfortunately reached the same level of his hated proprietary vendors, using a barrage of arguments that show little attention to the reality.

Given the fact that RMS cares nothing of me (I still remember the disdain when I suggested that “Libre” may have been a better word than “Free”) and I am tired of being hated only by academics, I would like to dissect a few of the points raised by our beloved Richard.
