I really want one of these boxshot programs.. I compared a few of them today and my conclusions are as follows:

TBS Cover Editor seems like the most powerful tool, with basically a full editor that lets you place text and clipart exactly where you want it.  Most boxshot editors require you to create an image file for each side of the box shot and use those.  While that may be ok much of the time, it does make it significantly harder to tweak things and deal with odd proportioned areas like the spines of boxes, etc.  The graphic editor in TBS is extremely impressive, and the real time preview is fast and snappy.  Big thumbs up here:
sMainWindow.preview.jpg

The commercial box shot programs use templates that have different objects (like a box, a book, a cd, a dvd case), so all have the potential of supporting more fun designs.

However, the only thing causing me to hesitate in purchasing TBS Cover Editor is that they are missing some object designs that would be really nice to have.  For example Insofta Cover Commander has must less control over placing your graphics and editing, but has some really neat object designs you can use, including a spiral book, and several designs which show a cd/dvd box with a cd standing next to it or half removed, which i personally like better than the designs in TBS:

Compare this to the meager collection of object designs in TBS:
Screenshot - 4_6_2009 , 1_19_54 PM.png

And it should be said that the lack of a graphic editor has an unexpected benefit for a program like Insofta, which is that you can easily switch between different object designs and see how your box images would look on them, which you can't do in TBS because each object design template requires different graphics layout.  However this may be less useful than it seems because its not often that the image files will be the right proportions for multiple object templates, which requires a cumbersom editing of the graphic image files in a separate program.

So my conclusion:
TBS Cover Editor could be an easy pick for top Box Shot Tool on the planet, if they created more object designs.  Even without them, it's right up there at the top of the heap -- the only reason to choose another tool would be if you really wanted one of these other objects (like a box+cd combo image, which i think is pretty nice looking).

If and when TBS Cover editor adds some of these fancy object designs it will be an easy recommendation.

For historical purposes, we better show the DC banner at this time, so people know what everyone is talking about:

DesktopCoral / Re: Widgets?
« Last post by mouser on April 05, 2009, 09:58 PM »
it might help to see a screenshot of the before and after of desktop coral before and after exiting.

the problem is:
i may be able to fix desktop coral when starting up to not affect placement of anything already on screen.. but how to stop the widget from readjusting when desktop coral exits is out of my control? actually i suppose i could..

can you confirm: if instead of exiting desktop coral, you simply right-click and say "undock" does the widget still readjust itself like it does on desktop coral exit?

And if the first program doesn't help, neither will chameleon.

can you explain a bit more what you say is happening when you exit.. you're saying that if you exit desktop coral, that act pushes your widget out of the way? even if you exit desktop coral manually?  that confuses me.

Site/Forum Features / Re: March 2009 Fundraiser Wrap-up
« Last post by mouser on April 05, 2009, 12:19 PM »
Ok in seriousness:

A good portion will be given from users to users in the form of donationcredits (remember every donation during the fundraiser is still deposited into the user's account for them to decide who to allocate to if they choose to; many don't).

Much will go into bank, and will be used to pay hosting costs and server administration costs, and other expenses over the coming year.  Some will get spent on some fun new member kit things i wanted to get to send out (bookmarks and stickers), to pay for upcoming event prizes (we spent about $1000 in January on NANY mugs and stuff).  Some will get eaten by taxes.

Because people don't always take the time to allocate their credits, i'll send some out to people on the site like mods who make this place better.  Some will go to help me pay my student loans!

We can watch over the course of the year to see what continuing donations look like, and based on that keep our eye open for anything we as a site would like to spend some of the money on, whether it be prizes for the next programming challenge, etc.

What the heck happened in October '08?

i assume you are referring to the "Most Online" column.  This isn't a very useful column -- it simply tells you the most # of people who were ever online "at the same time" (within a small window).

so that giant number for october 08 reflects some post that was big on digg or something, and so suddenly got a lot of traffic on one day.

Ok I thought I would use this new thread to post some summary info about the fundraiser.
(for a more fun thread that discussed the fundraiser while it was in progress with lots of comments by everyone, see: here).

Note: I have family visiting currently which is why my posting has been a bit sporadic recently, so i'm going to post this info in several bite-sized junks.

So first some quick stats (these numbers are approximate):
  • Total money donated: during the march fundraiser: $13,844.
  • Total # of donations: About 659.
  • Of the people donating during fundraiser, this percent had already donated in the past: 29% (189)
  • Average donation: $21 (which is a higher than during non-fundraiser)

is there a ff extension (i'm sure there must be) that lists open tabs in the sidebar?  that would be another way to tackle the issue since you should be able to show many more tabs lines there.

We have a section where people can post requests/ideas for relatively small tools here:

For larger ideas, you could just post them in this General Software Discussion if you are comfortable doing so, and at least get a discussion going about it.

DesktopCoral / Re: Widgets?

Have you tried checking the option in Desktop Coral marked: Preserve Desktop Icon Locations (experimental)?

It was designed for similar purpose, but it probably won't work, so..

I think your best bet might be to get yourself a startup manager tool that let's you set the ORDER of startup programs and put desktop coral before your widget tool.

Utilities that let you change startup order:

I'll give some thought to adding an option in Desktop Coral to protect position of all windows.. it could be done.
