I haven't had a chance to play with it much yet but it's an *extremely* cool project.

Let's remember, there are some good tools for doing this kind of stuff if your main objective is regular capture of desktop while computer is being used; see for example: TimeSnapper

if you mean to change the default screenshot directory, you can do so by bringing up the main window and choosing file -> Change screenshot directory.

in the future you might want to just attach images to your post -- makes it a bit easier.
but, seeing as how it pushes your widget out of the way on undocking, that's a good sign; that means i should be able to fix.

a compromise might be a hotkey which prompted for a filename/path dialog and then saved clipboard text there.
(in fact i think i'll add this to my clipboard help and spell program).

yep, all the more reason to rely on another job site service and just try to find one that let us create a moderated group on their site.

IMO is would be very difficult to locate an existing job posting website that would allow for a special group to be created and limited to users from DC.   Plus using an existing board means we would be bound by their TOS and payment structures which may not fit into the DC way of doing things.

you may be right -- i'd just like to be sure about this before we went to the trouble to set up our own system.  since DC is not interested in making any commissions or money from this, we don't really need to be involved in the process in any real way, so it seems reasonable to me that we could let another site do most of the job arrangement service, and just add to that experience by providing a few additional features for DC-related people, like provide some moderation over who is in the group, so that when you hired or were hired by someone in dc, you had some confidence both were dc regulars who were known, etc.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA:Auto-boot Up computer after power outage?
« Last post by mouser on April 07, 2009, 05:45 AM »
great question.. i'm curious to hear what others suggest.

i think you are onto the solution already and have most of the pieces of the puzzles figured out.

it seems to me that one solution might be:
  • set up wake on lan/wan on the pc
  • since you have a dynamic ip, you can't wake up your pc from a computer connecting to the pc from OUTSIDE your house, where you might be.
  • BUT you should be able to set up a local laptop which was always on (and having a battery is unaffected by power outages) to ping the LOCAL (and thus always stable ip) address of this pc, waking it up if it shuts down due to power outage.

you could charge a fee, $10 per saber.

Someone asked me about these.. We used to have a larger collection but most were only mediocre.

Here is a small page of the really good ones, for anyone who wants to link to DC and show their pride in the site:

Can you download and backup the data/results?
yes, you can download the result data in csv or excel format.
you can't download the survey itself in any form.

Living Room / Re: TED Videos etc..
« Last post by mouser on April 06, 2009, 04:59 PM »
i agree with kartal -- i find them annoying -- almost like i am watching an infomercial.

note that i don't doubt the value of the speakers or that they have fascinating stuff to tell us.  what bothers me is how the TED talks seem almost entirely designed to get the audience to repeatedly ooh and ahh.. and how the people in charge of TED have specifically set up microphones to capture and let us hear all these loud oohs and ahs from the audience, exactly like an infomercial.  it's just too much for me -- i'd rather hear a calm talk designed to teach.

i wonder if it could be the hotkey combination causing an issue.. if you try changing it to something like F8 or something that doesn't use the ctrl or alt keys, see if it make a difference.

also note that when you use the quick paste menu, it actually puts the selected text into the clipboard while it pastes.. so worst case is if it doesn't auto paste, you should still be able to hit ctrl+V to subsequently paste when you just selected from the menu.

And please check out my post about the idea of adding a jobs board/group to dc forum:
https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=17681.0

My idea was that rather than reinvent the wheel -- let's see if we can find one of these existing job sites, but one that will let me or other programming school mod on dc be able to "manage" a listing of people on the other job site, and make extra comments, and prevent non-dc people from associating themselves with the group, and an api for being able to list everyone in the group on a dc page.

Just speaking for myself, I think I'll probably buy TBS while it's on sale today, and hope the authors get around to adding some extra objects soon.
