I used KAV6 and switched to NOD32 a little before my subscription was up. Kaspersky always gets top marks for its protection scheme - you really can't beat it!

I was a little put out by its behavior at times though. (BTW, I hated the sound with a passion! Though that wasn't what caused me to lose KAV6). KAV's version of Threat Detection or whatever they call their heuristics for malware was a little too over the top for me. Extremely aggressive and it ate up a fair number of good applications I like to use. I got an inordinate number of false positives from it. I spent a lot of time on their forum trying to resolve the problems, but in the end it was either "live with the issues or turn off that part of the program". Since the heuristics is part of what makes KAV good I didn't want to lose it, but I couldn't tolerate the unannounced quarantines and/or deletions that it did.

I just rechecked what it did: On a few occasions it grabbed emails that I was composing on another computer in my network that wasn't even using Kaspersky! In one case it was a forward of a phish email I had received that I was sending to the financial institution to alert them. As I was composing it, the email just suddenly disappeared. I was running Trend Micro on that computer and I thought that was doing it. I found the quarantined email on my desktop computer the next day. I wrote Kaspersky about it and they said "If it was a phish email then that's correct behavior". Bull! Then it started eating up my MediaMonkey scripts. Three of them I had written myself - VBS scripts. I had seen this early on and so placed them in the Exclusion section. After a couple months all of a sudden they would all disappear suddenly. If I was at the PC of course the screeching noise would alert me - and cause me to pee myself at the same time!   :o  Since they were supposed to be excluded I was baffled. Kaspersky did not reply to submittals for analysis, but a forum member told me that when new signatures are updated oftentimes they ignore the exclusions. And then I was told that the script protection module did not use the exclusions. As to why they would be safe for months and then suddenly delete them (Yes, NOT quarantine, but delete!), my best guess is the "new definitions" explanation.

I stick with NOD32 now. It also has quirks, but a lot less IMO.

What make? I read that HP has a known issue and requires mobo replacement. Mostly occurring with DV6000 notebooks and Broadcom cards though other combinations have been reported.

Numbers 1 and 2 in appyface's post above would be super, TJ. Let's face it, unless you only intend to use it for one and only one repeating task, then you have to right-click, 'Change Log Text', and then type in your log text. Much easier to just left-click, tpye your short note, and then click OK. The way it is now, I find I don’t use it much.

I really think that you should have an attorney write it up for you. Actually I'm sure they have standard templates for just this kind of letter and can quickly modify it as needed to fit your specific situation. No matter how well you word it yourself, remember that the courts expect to see certain words that make the thing legal, and just putting common sense words/thoughts on paper does not necessarily protect you.

You know as well as I do that some people will sue no matter what kind of wording you have in the agreement with them, and you can be sure that they will have an attorney scrub the agreement. If the wording in it is non-standard, their attorney might be able to have it invalidated.

I don't know how much additional revenue you stand to bring in from the new contracts, but I would think that an attorney could draw up a simple letter or attachment for your repair/service agreements for a relatively small fee: maybe $100 to $150 all in.

Just my opinion, anyway.  ;)   :)

I tried to print this page that we are posting at right now, and you are right; the right margin is being cut off. However, I am on my way to bed (3 at night around here!), so I am not sure if the error is on Polestar only, or if Firefox has a part in it, too, but I don't have the time to test it further.

The one I posted are from their pre-printed PDF file, so unless they did that themselves in Firefox, then it wasn't Firefox.

Not sure what happened here, but I went to their screenshots page and clicked on the link to see an example of a PDF document created with Polestar.  Here's the link:

Gave me a download dialog for the PDF, which I downloaded and then viewed in PDF Converter Pro. Here are a couple of screen captures of problems in the document:

Anyone else used this for any other printing?

Ahh, I killed my cache again. Seems like I have to do this a few times a day, but only for DonationCoder. Weird!

As for the Canon inks, I get them very reasonably at Amazon - multi-paks. Better than the HP cartridges I used to purchase. I print a LOT of hi-res photos and actually find that using the Canon PIXMA ink and Canon Pro photo paper gets me the best results. YMMV, I guess.

Don't get me wrong - I really love the Canon PIXMA MP830. Best color photos I have ever printed. Easy and fast duplex printing - both side of the paper. Automatic Document Feeder that takes about 20 - 25 sheets. And the Canon ink is relatively inexpensive.

Just hate it when it doesn't recognize a new cartridge!

I have used Dragon NaturallySpeaking Pro version for a few years due to a disability that makes it difficult to type on a keyboard. Dragon has been the best speech recognition/dictation software for some time. However I have tried the Vista speech recognition yet. I do have a notebook running Vista Ultimate but to be honest I never input a lot on my notebook. Since I have the Dragon SR software on my desktop and if I do use the keyboard I prefer the larger full-size type. But I am going to have to give the Vista software a try - heard a few people talk it up!

Of course dictating commands is one thing; trying to input a lot of text using SR software is a different animal! BTW, the quality of microphone that you use makes a HUGE difference in recognition accuracy.

Well the search engines are shown in your FF Profile folder, correct?  And FEBE claims to back up the WHOLE Profile, as mentioned by mwang, so that should do it. If you are still suspicious of FEBE then you shouldn't use it, I guess.

You can always go to the Firefox user folder and make a copy of the search engines there. Or make a copy of the entire folder and store it elsewhere, on a CD, an external drive, online data storage, etc.

OK, OK...  How could I not be convinced with these recommendations? I signed up last night and am now waiting for my first shipment. The only bad part is that enrolling on a Friday evening and with a holiday weekend - Labor Day is a holiday for most, including Netflix, here in the US - means that they won't ship until Tuesday. So Wednesday is the soonest I can expect my initial DVDs; Thursday is probably more likely.

And since the first two weeks are technically the "Trial Period" (No way I found to directly subscribe without going through the "Trial"), I imagine that Netflix tries to ensure that the top three DVDs in our queue are available. I remember reading about two years ago that if a subscriber is getting more than a certain limit of DVDs monthly that they consider high usage, they stop sending them their top selections, instead reserving those for the less frequent users. I actually do understand that policy, though that's not to say it is necessarily correct.

Anyway, thanks for all the excellent and comments!

I tried EN3 - I really did. Just cannot like it much. I don't need the convenience of web access and actually much prefer to have all my data local. USB Flash drive works for me. I still find EN2 much easier to use, and I don't use all the power search options that most EN 2.2 users use. I have a very fast internet connection but EN3 still moves way to slow for me. I also have OneNote 2007 and Ultra Recall and find myself using those more than EN altogether. OneNote is noce but very different - and so I use it differently. Ultra Recall is much better for some things, but its web clipping is extremely poor.

I use Scrapbook with Firefox 3, OneNote 2007, and good old Screenshot Captor for grabbing web data I want or need.

I use a Canon All-In-One - the PIXMA MP830 - and it truly is the best all-around printer/scanner that I have owned.  And this after 11 straight HP's. It uses five separate ink tanks (inkjet) and the printer pops up a warning when one needs to be replaced, which is a nice feature. Except that it does this long before the ink cartridge will actually run out of ink. The good part is that you can just ignore the pop-up, or close it, and continue printing until you wish. I used to change them as soon as the warning hit - the HP's I had used previously were a bit more accurate with their ink warnings. But you can usually print on the Canon for a solid week past the warnings if you are printing mostly text pages. I guess I can understand why the warning starts so early: If you are printing very high-resolution images - like large photos - the tank really could get low enough to distort the photo's colors, which would waste that photo paper and the ink from the other cartridges that went into that unfinished photo. But I was tossing cartridges that had a good week or more of printing left in them.

One other thing that plagues the Canon PIXMA printers that is much more annoying and frustrating is that sometimes after you put a brand new cartridge in the printer will not print and claims that you removed a cartridge and did not replace it with a new one. It actually can't read the new cartridge and refuses to try without another cartridge being inserted.  Which leads to a shelf full of new cartridges that won't work!

Canon claims that they will replace such cartridges but only if you send in diagnostic logs, proof of purchase, and a few other bits of documentation. Much more trouble than it is worth sometimes. (I couldn't always find everything they wanted, and I really don't wish to set up yet another tracking system at home for something stupid like "Ink Documentation". (Honest, it IS my ink cartridge!  See...  It has my nose!)

My other complaint (I guess) is that in order for them to recommend other movies to you, they ask you to rate a bunch of movies you've seen. Well the obvious problem for anyone actually using the service is that we would get some movies that my wife would love and I would hate, or vice versa, but they apparently didn't take into account the idea that multiple people in the same household might have different opinions, so you can only rate the movie one way for the entire account. Naturally my wife would rate movies she loved with 5 stars and then it would recommend many similar titles that I had no interest in at all. :-(

Shouldn't be a problem - just hack her email account and trap all Netflix messages - forward them to yourself!   ;D ;D ;D

(Of course even as I write this I am peeking in the "Behind Me" parabolic mirror over my desk to make sure that MY exceedingly lovely, brilliant, and most benevolent wife is not peeking over my shoulder!!  (Emphasis added 'cause that's all she can hopefully see from way back there...  hehehe  OOPS, Bye!)   :rip:   8)

J-mac, the calculator says that the 3 movies at a time plan is your best value, and here's why. Get AnyDVD and CloneDVD and just copy the movies to your HD or to a disc, then watch them at your leisure. I've done that for years and now have over 1400 movies, series, documentaries, fantastic foreign films, Trailer Park Boys, music, all kinds of things I would have never watched, given the time. I have not, however, tried watching a film online.

I've never had a problem with Netflix. Some weeks their delivery seems slow, but then they make up for it the next couple of weeks. And as mouser mentioned, one of its coolest features is that Netflix allows you to suspend your account for up to 3 months each year. During this time of year, I don't have the time to watch movies, so I put my account on hold. I can still add movies to my queue and so on, but I'm not being charged during that time. Pretty cool.

I don't know how I missed your post - and you have me laughing here! 1400?!? Wow - that's a LOT. You must have more time on your hands than me - and I have a lot, stuck at home forever now.

As for AnyDVD and CloneDVD, I have had both since shortly after they were initially released; 2002 or 2003, I think. I actually haven't copied many rental DVDs or anything, but I do copy all of my own DVDs and CDs. Lost more than a few in DVD players gone bad and that will never happen again!

Your plan does sound interesting, though, especially since Netflix allows you to keep DVDs as long as you want, so you're not really doing much different there.

I'd love to place all DVDs on my hard drive, but up to now all I can do with the ones on my HDD is either burn them later or watch them on the computer. I have been looking for a decent way to be able to stream DVDs from my network to our TVs, but there are so few devices that can do that, none are inexpensive at all - quite the contrary, and the streaming part is at best unreliable and not very high in quality, from all that I have read. If anyone has found a good way to do this, I'd appreciate some advice!

I do like the categorization feature.  I am now using SoftCAT Plus, and it does have categories, but I don't particularly like how they have implemented them.  The choices appear to be hard-coded; I cannot customize the categories or sub-categories and I don't really like how they are worded.  I could use a user-custom field - they allow you 18 of those.  Not sure how yet but I'll look into it.

Reminds me of the web host I used for a few years, Pierre.  Page-Zone.  Very small company, but really excellent for about four or five years.  Then it all seemed to crash at once. I don't know what happened there, but suddenly the incidence of servers going down and no response from their support system or emails was wild.  I had to dump them for another - and the new one wasn't nearly as good as Page-Zone had been, but they were more reliable than Page-Zone after their mysterious down-turn.
