General Software Discussion / Re: Auto-download from DC with WinSCP
« Last post by kyrathaba on August 11, 2011, 02:59 PM »
I've been experimenting with WinSCP, but so far haven't figured out how to connect to my DC ftp account.  I dunno if I'm entering the connection string wrong, or if WinSCP doesn't support secure FTP.

It looks like Command Line FTP would work too.

And what about the current scores already there? Is my 2nd place one going to get removed since it was an older version potentially taking me out of -> "The top-three high-scoring DC members will receive an additional prize from the site." as you posted on the first post?

Sorry, I should have been clearer.  No, your existing high-scores won't get culled.  But any scores you may submit that exceed your existing high-score will be checked by the PHP script to ensure that they were submitted by a patched version of the program.  If they weren't, eventually the sweeper will get them.

General Software Discussion / Auto-download from DC with WinSCP
« Last post by kyrathaba on August 11, 2011, 11:49 AM »
I wonder if this is permissible and possible: I'd like to automate something that, currently, I'm doing manually.  I backup my Flatpress Blog by downloading it to my MyBook using Filezilla.  I understand that WinSCP can be used in console mode with an associated text file acting as a script.  I'm wondering (1) if this is permissible even if I get it working and (2) if permissible, does anyone have any experience and can provide a sample script.

All I want is a WinSCP script to automate downloading my /flatpress/ directory to my MyBook.  Then I can use Task Scheduler to automate this.

About half of the people favor progressive programs and half want government to get downsized and stay the hell out of their lives. Your hubris at the righteousness of your side vs the other half of the people is amusing. Squawk all you want, but the next election will turn out like the last ones; split right down the middle and decided on statistical error. Someday, real compromise and sanity.....someday. Michael Moore aint it.

Agreed.

Where does QuickNote store user's notes?

Found my own answer:

C:\Users\[your user-name]\Documents\Quicknote

Version 1.0.4.4 is available and this is a required update if you wish to compete via the online high-score database.

This update patches a potential exploit discovered by thancock20 (many thanks thancock20 !!)

The easiest way to update is to run the existing installed version, and use "About"->"Update".

Please note the following from the Help text file:

v 1.0.4.4 (released 8-11-2011)

fixes an exploit found by thancock: this update is required if
you want to compete using the online high-score database. Although
older versions will still submit highscores, the database will
not retain them long-term because there is a PHP sweeper function
that will periodically cull the database of scores submitted
with older versions which have not had the exploit patched.

Still, I noticed that there is no way to reset it or retrieve it.

PM me your Hangman username and desired password and I'll reset it for you.

I became a bit frustrated that using the Search box on my Flatpress blog only turned up results in which the search term was found within post titles, not within the actual contents of the posts.  Found that by modifying the SearchBox plug-in, I could repeat the search and, although it at first shows "No Results", it also gives you a "Search again" link.  Clicking it, it produces an advanced search interface that allows, via radio-button, to select for search within posts.  I've attached the modified plug-in, which should be placed in flatpress/fp_plugins/searchbox/

Thanks wraith!  That does look like what I'm needing.  I'm only wanting a select few pages to be passworded.  Can I set up PMWiki in a subdirectory and just password-protect access to web-pages in that directory only?

I'll read more about PMWiki tonight.  Right now, I've got to leave for work.

Thanks for the info!

I envision my blog becoming a sort of centralized information-store for me, although I've not quite figured out how I'm going to handle sensitive information, such as addresses, phone numbers, etc.  There are three approaches I've thought about: (1) use a PHP password-protection scheme to protect certain pages, (2) encrypt the data (but that sort of defeats ease of access), and (3) obfuscate the data in some simple way that I can mentally decode it on the fly -- I dunno, transpose digits in phone numbers or shift them all by 1, for instance.  I'm posting this here for feedback, because the community always proves fruitful when you're wanting to do something without reinventing the wheel.

I suppose the obvious answer is: memorize the most critical data, or keep it on my person in a passworded PIM device.  I'm open to people shooting down this idea of putting semi-sensitive stuff on my blog in a semi-protected format.  Obviously, I'm not going to put any seriously sensitive stuff up, like financial info (credit card # anyone?)

For any of you who may give Flatpress a try, there is a bug in the ReadMore plug-in.  I have fixed it, and the corrected file is attached to this post.  It should be placed in flatpress/fp-plugins/readmore/

To elucidate, the plug-in, as it was in the install archive, didn't reliably cut off text where I placed the [more] tag.  I rearranged a couple of if/then blocks within this particular plug-in file, and now it works reliably.  Note that once you click the 'Read more...' link that is created by the placement of the [more] tag, your post will no longer be truncated until you clear the Flatpress cache or else click on your Home widget.

You can see examples of the corrected plug-in in use here, by taking note of the "Read more..." links at the bottom of truncated posts.

Agree with rgdot.  Also, apathy is the worst enemy of the common weal.  People as a whole are tremendously apathetic, and willing to tolerate an absurd level of B.S. from [employers, governments, insert others here...] If it weren't for this chronic apathy, we'd have seen real change in the U.S. by now.  Even I am a hypocrite, because although I recognize this truth intellectually, and am posting about it here, I haven't done anything constructive about it.  I can't even say that I vote in every election.

+1, Deozaan.

I think it's due to two primary reasons: (1) laziness, and (2) incompetence.  There's a third factor involved, too, though: we live in an age where cliches and sound bytes have become the "meat and potatoes" of our news, both on television and in the printed word.  A lot of authors seem to feel that if they can introduce a goodly supply of buzz words, and the tone of their article is sufficiently critical, it's "good enough".

Ah, but slow relative to what?  I can't imagine PowerShell programs being speed-critical.
