General Software Discussion / Re: What Android Apps Do You Use?
« Last post by ewemoa on March 31, 2011, 05:09 AM »
I'm afraid I can't help with any of these questions. To be honest, I'm not listening to music on the device very often.
Thanks for responding any way :)

RealCalc (free/donation): A calculator that does it all, including conversions.
Ahhh, the SHIFT key and then the 0 key for conversions.  Nice.

Wifi Analyzer (free): Essential for locating and evalutaing hotspots.
I like the graphical depiction used - nicer than the one in Tricorder ;)

  • Aldiko (free): Excellent ePub and pdf reader. I have several others of each, but find I now use this one almost exclusively.
Didn't know that recent versions supported PDF.  Hmm, no non-multi-touch zoom at the moment it seems:

AdFree
I had avoided rooting until I read about this incident...I didn't succeed in determining whether my device had any relevant updates and this led to rooting the phone and creating an empty /system/bin/profile file.  I don't suppose there's a list of mobile device sellers who are known to be good at providing security updates...

As a side benefit I get to try things like AdFree :)

Thanks for mentioning it!

Now if I could find some screen capturing app I could download...

Audiobooks - Quick access to LibriVox's entire catalog.
Nice!  I was able to try it out (I assume it's the same thing) via Android Freeware.

3 (Cubed) - Cool music player with widget (but lacks EQ)
Trying this out now - do you happen to know if it's possible to display the time elapsed so far of the current track?

Also, is there "sleep timer" functionality?  I have SleepTimer, but it seems more convenient for this functionality to be built-in to the audio player.

On a related note, I'm also trying MortPlayer Music - have you tried that out?

What's your reason for not using the market?
Originally it was because I didn't know how to use it without a Google account -- and it didn't sit well with me to have to make an account which might be associated with a device like a mobile phone AND applications.  Another way to put it might be that I feel pretty uncomfortable from the perspective of privacy.

File Expert - Excellent file manager plus one touch HTTP/FTP server for managing via PC.
Didn't know about the one touch HTTP/FTP server -- handy!

Thanks for pointing that out :)

Eager to try out some of these apps, but not being a Market user, I was happy to find Android Freeware as it appears to provide a fair number of .apk files for download.

Prior to using this site, I'd been using SlideME and AndAppStore -- neither seemed to have RealCalc or ASTRO File Manager but Android Freeware did :)

Some fun text in the description for "Change Search Shortcut":

Allows to change the search shortcut. After the comedy with Panorama taking over CTRL+E, then switching to CTRL+SHIFT+E, without restoring CTRL+E, I've decided to make this very simple plug-in to allow people to choose their own shortcut.

Nice

I lightly tested Ctrl-Clicking and Shift-Clicking with success :)

Hi lanux128 :)

Thanks for both tips

I hadn't heard of the "restartless add-ons".  Looking forward to more add-ons going in that direction!
1987
Had been using the QuickRestart Firefox add-on:

  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/quickrestart/

but it doesn't seem to be working currently for Firefox 4.0.

Just installed and tested (at least it worked once...) an alternative add-on Restartless Restart:

  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/restartless-restart/

Copy-pasted description:

This very tiny (7KB) add-on will add a "Restart" menu item to the "File" menu, and a ctrl/cmd + alt + r hotkey to Firefox or Seamonkey which will restart the program. It can also be installed/uninstalled/enabled/disabled all without requiring a restart, hence the name "Restartless Restart".

Restartless Restart is similar to the QuickRestart add-on except it doesn't work on FF < 4, it does work on FF 4, it's restartless, it's 7KB instead of 34KB, it works for Seamonkey, it doesn't have a toolbar button, and it's not localized.

sighing
Too bad it appears that we still have to restart FF for add-on installation...

Just installed the following one here:

Call Confirm (asks if you really want to call someone)

Looks like it may help reduce the number of accidental callls  :-[

Thanks!

Thanks for posting about Sigil.  I've been trying it out and though it seems a bit rough around the edges, it seems to be coming along ok.

(Just wish there were a way to provide feedback to the developer without having to "sign in" to Google -- may be there is a way and I haven't found it...)

skwire:
  Indeed it has, sir :)

phitsc:
I was surprised too.  After some pondering it occurred to me that perhaps a project the size of Firefox has just too many details to attend to with the kind of care one might otherwise want...

General Software Discussion / Firefox 4 (4.0) and Shortcut Key for Search Bar
« Last post by ewemoa on March 24, 2011, 06:19 PM »
Trying out Firefox 4 here and noticed that the Ctrl+E shortcut key for the Search Bar from the 3.x days seems defunct (Ctrl+K seems to work).

Checking out:

  http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/764069

led to a work-around of installing and configuration via the following extension:

  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/customizable-shortcuts/

Configuration was done via the Shortcuts tab of the Options dialog:

options-shortcuts-search-web-search.png

Once a row for the action/shortcut in question was selected, clicking on the 'Edit' button or double-clicking on the shortcut key name made it possible to type a replacement shortcut key.

This topic was inspired by phitsc's Android apps micro reviews :)

So, Android users, what non-bundled apps do you use?

Below are some free ones I've found handy:

Updated: Added links to AppBrain pages.

Something atypical for GeoGebra perhaps...

Thanks to app103 ;)

About the .zip attachment
The .zip attachment, if renamed to use the extension .ggb, should be viewed/used in GeoGebra.

Made mostly with GeoGebra:

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR plugin: FarrWebMetaSearch 1.6.0
« Last post by ewemoa on July 16, 2010, 11:40 PM »
Yes, I confirm this. It seems like FARR does not replace the %PLUGINDIR% variable correctly.
It is strange to me because IIRC in some of my plugins I use "resolve:%PLUGINDIR%" via callback_get_strvalue successfully.  I wonder what's going on...

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FLua: FARR Plugins Using Lua
« Last post by ewemoa on July 09, 2010, 08:39 PM »
FLua-2010-07-09.zip contained a lua.exe (for interactive fun and testing) which might lead to problems.

The following has a (hopefully) fixed lua.exe along with a lightly-tested LuaSocket:

  http://ewemoa.dcmemb.../FLua-2010-07-10.zip

SHA-1: 2dd74629b0f8487444214dfdac1ae548880dff98

Short sample of LuaSocket use:

Code: Text [Select]
  1. http = require("socket.http")
  2. print(http.request("http://donationcoder.com"))

For more details, please see the reference.
