Deo beat me to the post, but I'll just add that the member map doesn't answer this question directly, but it is relevant to the discussion, and there are over 800 people on it so far:

its a great idea, but i believe it does exist, and i think we discussed such a program before.
i really like the idea though, so if the existing programs dont do a good enough job it would be a nice one to implement.

can anyone remember the existing tool for this that we have discussed before?

It took me a while to add the new troubleshooting log system to FARR, but hopefully it will provide useful in my other programs now as well. it will make it easier for my programs to log info that users can inspect for troubleshooting information, and can be used to autodetect and autodisable crashing plugins.

Will be uploaded with next release.

After over a dozen years of non-driving, i've reacquired the skill and discovered an amazing car sharing service that is in my town and in many other big towns/cities, called ZipCar.

As someone who grew up in a city that where the most common means of getting around is mass transport, not driving was no big deal.. But in most places, having a car is important.  Still, even where I am now i get to most places on public transportation, and having a car of my own seems overkill and way too expensive, especially with insurance costs.

But this ZipCar thing is perfect for people like me who would still like to do some occasional driving, to go shopping or pick people up at airport, etc.

Basically it's about $50 a year, and then you pay $8/hour or so for when you actually use a car.  This cost includes good insurance coverage and all gas costs.

All reservations can be done online, and you get a key card that unlocks the car during your reservation -- so you never have to deal with an actual human.

Pros:
  • Completely automated system.
  • Cheap if you very rarely drive.
  • As a member you can use zipcars in any state.

Cons:
  • Useless unless ZipCar operates very near you -- within walking distance; so only useful to a small fraction of people on planet.
  • They are strict about reservations (since others may have it reserved after you); so when you say it will be back by a certain time, it MUST be back by then.
  • Expensive if you need to use the care for a full day (then a standard car rental becomes cheaper)

thanks -- i think i messed up the ontop behavior in the last update, going to upload a new version this week.

Living Room / Re: Tell me what your software DOESN'T do... (a rant)
« Last post by mouser on May 11, 2009, 08:09 PM »
I think it will never happen. No one will ever point out all weaknesses of his software
which is why it's a good idea of a feature to look for on review sites.

Then I read this and remember Mouser's recent wail and I think maybe I'd better leave it alone

make sure you read the later pages of posts where i start to waiver and decide to use drupal again as a programming platform.

however, i still say it's a truly evil nightmare from an end-user perspective.

Dear mister generic developer, please tell me what your software does not do. Upfront-like. Thank you.

great point -- we would all be better off if programs gave us some bullet points of what they don't do, or don't do well.

one thing that might be nice skrommel, is if you can support the file formats i use in my various quote programs (popup wisdom and multiphoto quotes).
you can download quote files here:
https://www.donation...pUpWisdom/books.html

there are basically 2 formats:
1) standard fortune file format, which uses % on newlines to separate quotes
2) single quote per line format (and i use first line of file for extra info)

Great work skrommel, and much credit also to r0bertdenir0, who basically showed the way.

I saw it with an old friend, both of us are pretty big fans of star trek, though not trekkies/trekkers.  I thought it was flawed but quite good.  He hated it.

UrlSnooper / Re: Source IP not matching URL hostname
« Last post by mouser on May 10, 2009, 12:00 PM »
that might make some sense -- sometimes urlsnooper has to guess about the source ip or hostname i think.. if you go to advanced mode and actually click on the url found, it will show you on bottom the complete url in context -- from there you will see if the ip is actually part of the url, or if urlsnooper basically added the ip based on a guess from something scanned earlier.

The Form Letter Machine / Re: Problem with TFLM
« Last post by mouser on May 09, 2009, 11:20 PM »
i looked over heidi's files and determined that what happened was that the .dat data files were almost certainly messed up by a tool that treated them as text files and converted CRLF pairs to LF characters.  i suspect this was done by a zip program.  more investigation will reveal and i will report.
19620
my experience with sourceforge is that they are very generous and trusting when it comes to giving out sourceforge accounts and web/ftp space, and probably don't have the employees to police these accounts very well.
19621
It's definitely worth a try though.

i don't know if it really is.. but it's at least worth thinking about.

i mean there may still actually be a way to investigate the memory used by windows system and find out directly which programs have registered which global hotkeys, though obviously not easily.  i wouldn't start implementing this other method just yet -- but at least it's something to consider for the future.
19622
If one *wanted* to discover what applications the hotkeys belonged to.. you could have a special mode that starting closing/killing applications and watching which hotkey assignments were released, and keeping that on record.

Hi Heidi,

We have talked over email but didn't quite figure out what was up -- let me contact you again and see if i can understand what the nature of your problem is.

note to anyone who is impatient to read stuff and  makes same mistake as me -- the download tranglos just attached above (controlStopWatch) is *NOT* the stopwatch utility!!! It's an optional helper script you can use to control it.

You still need to download the main utility from the first post.

thanks for the info Brahman, i didn't know anything about secure cookies and now i'm off to learn a bit.
