Regarding TC's looks: everything you see on the screen can be changed. Fonts, icons, program elements, and even the menus. If you find something to be ugly then change it. First thing I always turn off is those ugly brackets around the directory names.

Kartal, I'd suggest the last freeware version of PowerFolder (PowerFolder Basic), but I just found out that it doesn't have the encryption features that one can only get from the commercial Pro version.

I've never used Acronis True Image, but they have a very good reputation and they are at the top of their field with satisfied customers (unlike Ghost).

I think we're getting to the stage of the game, though, where I think it'd be a frugal decision money-wise to hold off buying anything like this until these products support Windows 7. The release to manufacturing date is rumored to be scheduled for mid-July and could be on store shelves in mid-October.

Oh man, what lanux said! Session Manager integrates perfectly with Tab Mix Plus. It's a perfect solution to the limitation I was running into with Tab Mix Plus only keeping track of the last two sessions.

In other news, I'm running Firefox 3.5 b99 and it's very snappy. It's working great with the 27 extensions I have installed thus far.

Out of curiosity (I'm not this insane/worried), could one create a TC volume contained within the hidden TC volume? (Thereby making a volume, in a volume, in a volume - it would be interesting )

I know TrueCrypt was not designed to do it and if you were to try it even if it did work it'd be an unsupported scenario. I could see some kind of obscure, esoteric infinite-loop bug popping up.

just other overly-curious kids at school that have the want and knowledge to rummage through my data like it is a toy store (we have some high level tech classes that can be twisted to assist in hacking and the like, and I had a 120GB hard drive stolen (at school!) last year with some data on it), as well as simply losing the drive and not having to freak out because of the couple GB of personal data on the drive is now in someones possession.

Then TrueCrypt will serve you well. I don't think anyone's been able to hack a TrueCrypt volume besides brute-force methods. Your data would be safe.

Off-topic: I'm really absent minded... I started typing this reply about 12 hours ago and completely forgot about the tab

And how is an absent-minded person going to remember his TrueCrypt passwords? Forgetting those would be a bad thing.

f0dder, I wasn't sure of the details that it required hardware as well (magnetic tips on cantilevers scanning drive platters. Ooo..fascinating), but i was trying to make wreckedcarzz aware that wiping a hard drive isn't going to save you if you have attracted the attention of The Man.

Now if you are trying to just keep parents, spouses, significant others, siblings, and friends from sticking their collective noses into your stuff then wipe away.

The only reason I brought this up at all is because he was talking about creating a container in a decoy container with a decoy password. That's usually only done for plausible deniability when you figure you are going to be demanded to give up the password and you figure you are going to have to do it or face significant consequences not like a friend wanting it and you can tell them to step off. Well, unless he's just trying to hide his midget porn from his parents or something similar.

Even PowerFolder relies on online storage to achieve its functions. The only difference is you are using their servers instead of your own FTP server or a webDAV-type account.

It seems that in this corner of the software market the simpler and more intuitive you wish it to be the more you are going to have to pay. I've searched pretty extensively over the last couple days. What you want, with the ease of use you want, coupled with what you want to pay does not appear to exist.

Modern-day forensic data recovery software is making remarkable strides in being able to recover data on drives that have been wiped. However, if you come across someone with such software and they have a keen interest in what is on your encrypted volume you will have far larger worries than worrying about someone checking out your passwords.

As long as you are not doing anything illegal you should be fine with a standard wipe. I recommending using DBAN (Darik's Boot And Nuke).

No extension recommendations at the moment because I am redoing my Firefox setup, but working on this project this morning reminded me of two tips that every Firefox user should keep in mind.

1. Do a fresh, clean re-install of Firefox every once in a while or at least start fresh with a new profile. Over time extensions leave obsolete files and settings behind and uninstalling extensions doesn't always remove everything that was added when they were installed.

2. Every so often set aside some time to go look at the homepages of the extensions you are using. Some extensions don't have auto-update routines set up properly so new versions may get released and you'll never be notified. I found three extensions this morning that had new versions that the Addons dialog's "Find Updates" function never knew existed.

So very true, f0dder. One misstep in the registry and your computer is not going to boot anymore. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see what the allure is with editing the registry on modern Windows systems. Vista and Windows 7 have optimized defaults for most things and mucking around in there when you only have half a clue (I'm looking at you, Black Viper!) is just going to degrade system performance.

Back in the days of Windows 3.11 and Win95, sure...if you wanted a decent performing system you were tweaking the crap out of the registry, but these days it's just not needed unless you have specific wants/needs.

That's right. They are going to re-imagine the classic sci-fi TV series (their words) and it's going to be aired sometime in the future. ABC says it's part of the fall lineup, but IMDB says don't expect it till 2010. The clip on the above link looks good, though.

Since they are using the word 're-imagine' I'm thinking they are looking to cash in like the Sci-Fi Channel did when they 're-imagined' the old 70s TV series Battlestar Galactica.

katal, the core engine is freeware & I think it only costs money to use if you use it with the LogMeIn service. You can always get an older version from FileHippo or OldVersions from before LogMeIn bought them out.

I've got nothing against Eudora. I used it for a long time, but stopped right after 4.0 and I moved on to PMMail 2000 for a long time. Looking back I must have really been odd...first I was using Eudora (a Mac program ported to the PC) and then moved to PMMail 2000 (an OS/2 program ported to the PC).

The secret to finding the best email program is you have to find one that works the way you do and has the same workflow reading/sorting/deleting mail you do.
