And here I am going back and forth, highlighting absolutely nothing looking for this "invisible text"!!  ;D

(I figured it must be something "juicy" to hide it that well! - Got me!)

(EDIT:  BTW, gotta learn me some Regex! I always skip it figuring I don't have the time. But I realize I am missing lots! Any decent learning resources? Thx!)

I'm still using Firefox 3.01. I have learned throughout all the initial FF beta versions to NOT allow Firefox to automatically upgrade; I have the upgrader configured to find and notify me about new releases of Firefox and extensions, but not install them - I do that manually when I feel it is safe.

Too many times I have upgraded right away and then found that many of the extensions don't work. And I really love the response you get on Mozillazine if you inquire about it at all - "I don't use ANY extensions. Why do you need extensions?" Ha! As I often say: The best thing about Firefox are the extensions. Ans the worst thing about Firefox are the extensions."  To be honest, I wouldn't even use Firefox without extensions. And I hate when they release a new version and most extensions stop working. Hate it!

I always wait now until I see that there are no big bugs, and until all my extensions catch up with the new release.

i used to use WipeOut but then i found out about Reveal Desktop which is an AHK script that does almost the same. very handy when in 'click' mode. :)

Hold down the Right Mouse Button while clicking the Left Button to slide open, visible windows off either side of the screen until the next Left Click, which will bring them back. A sliding/transition effect.  Allows you to click something onthe desktop when the screen is cluttered.

The Reveal Desktop link brings me to a parked, unused GoDaddy domain page.

I couldn't stand WDS3, and I also cannot stand WDS4!

Copernic is out too. I used v2 for a while but then the indexing suddenly lost control. Never could get it to work well again.

I'd consider X1 but I cannot even write them - won't accept my emails. I thought they didn't like me anymore or something but now it appears that it is because they will not recognize my email as valid. (?!?) I'm using Fastmail which uses the ".fm" domain, and I have found others with the same problem.

Well, though I have lifetime licenses for Total Commander and XYPlorer, Directory Opus  - even with its high initial cost and upgrade costs - is my keeper for as long as I am using a Windows box. The longer I use it the more indispensable it becomes.

It is a matter of policy. I am not allowed to run executable that aren't installed on the computer by the IT department.

Now I understand, nothing more than "Do what I say not what I do" kind of thing.

Have you thought of putting up a website with nothing but things that actually demonstrates the insecurities of a standard IE installation and then innocently suggesting to other work people that they visit it.

Possibly after a few dozen toolbars have been installed they may get the point  ;)

But then again....we are talking about a government department.....they never get the point......

THe "point" is that when companies allow employees to install programs on company-owned computers, the IT department spends more time cleaning/disinfecting machines than any other activity. Understand that most employees are not as knowledgeable as DC members, and do not see any harm in installing HotBar, CoolWebSearch, Skype, etc.

J-Mac, I'm not sure I fully understood your comment.  But the beta is still going on, so you can still claim your free license right now (with free upgrade when it comes out), in exchange for your feedback.  You can use it for personal/home use etc.  Anyone can give feedback to receive the free license.

Sorry Daniel. I didn't follow the first link in your post, as I saw the "download" and thought that it was a direct download link. Instead I clicked on the parent link in your signature and then looked at the Fast Math Parser pricing. Sounded like a standard beta version and would be free until you released the full version, after which the price appeared to be $600!

So I misunderstood your intention.  My bad. Sorry!

J-Mac: whether such a service will do any good depends on the knowledge of the criminals (or the people they sell the laptop to). I've never touched "hot goods", but I know I'd definitely not start by going online with a stolen laptop. I might snoop through the data, but I'd do that offline (probably creating a mirror of the disk), and then I'd certainly format the system clean.

But I guess your average criminal doesn't think that far?

In my experience (and, believe me, I do have experience with such cretin!), no, they don't think that far! Either looking to sell it off or scan it for useful booty. And, yes: most will just fire it right up, and who doesn't immediately go online?

Just an update: received an upgrade e-mail from Corel this morning - they're offering the upgrade from PSPP X2 to PSPP X2 Ultimate for $29.99 (CDN or USD). Only mollifies me a tiny amount...

Why would they make such an offer:
    • Transfers a bit more of your money to Corel.
    • Keeps you there as a customer - most people are apt to stay with a known "evil" if offered a "deal".
    • Keeps your attention on their product.

    Have fun!

    Codebyte,

Take a look at The Laptop Lock. I have it installed on my own notebook. You register your laptop at the web site, download and install the client on your computer, then you configure exactly what you want done to the contents of your laptop in the event it is stolen or lost. From their web site:

"If the computer is stolen, login into your account, mark the computer status as stolen. As soon as that machine connects to the Internet, the actions you set during setup will execute. The LaptopLock will also try to find out as much as possible about the connection to help in recovery of the machine. THE LAPTOPLOCK DOES NOT MONITOR OR RECORD USER ACTIONS. THE LAPTOPLOCK DOES NOT ALLOW ANYONE ACCESS TO YOUR COMPUTER OR DATA. THE LAPTOPLOCK CAN ONLY EXECUTE ACTIONS THE USER HAS PRE-PROGRAMMED IT WITH."

I have it set up on my notebook. Just make sure that you keep good backups - and NOT on the computer itself!

    Jim

EDIT:  BTW - Free for the time being. I guess it could become a For Pay solution in the future.

Ouch! If I liked it, I wouldn't be able to do anything about it after the beta period. Apparently not for the personal/home/casual user!

    Deozaan,

Folks were posting about specifically wanting to use a "rocker" gesture to go back and forward, mostly used in browsers. That's the only reason I mentioned A-I-O Gestures. It's perfect for that feature alone! And Opera already has that feature built-in.

I don't see why the computer would need to run all day. My brother has MagicJack. It's just a little usb device that you plug in to your computer, and then you can make calls. I guess the only reason you would have to leave your computer turned on all the time is if you are stupid and ditch your home phone service to use this instead. I wouldn't recommend using any voip service as your main service, especially if you have suddenlink! suddenlink has problems with randomly being slower then dial-up (BAD for voip), and I also have problems with randomly loosing my internet connection completely. I guess that is the only reason you would need to leave your computer on at all times with this. BUT anyways, like I said, my brother has MagicJack, and he says it works perfectly.

I use VoIP phone service and ditched my home phone service -- why do you call me "stupid"? A little arrogant, or possibly ignorant, methinks!

I have two separate wireless mobile phone accounts to fall back on. I used Vonage for 3 years and then switched to Comcast's VoIP service last year. I'll be moving back to Vonage, however, when the Comcast contract expires - Vonage has a much better service IMO.

To be perfectly honest, my Vonage line was OOS exactly two times for a total of 45 minutes in three years, which is significantly more reliable than Verizon's POTS line was.  My Verizon line always had static and was down about a dozen times a year, sometimes for days at a time. I feel stupid for having relied on it for two years after Vonage service was available here!

The advertisement style certainly makes it look like a scam.
However it was reviewed positively several times.

My problem is that seems to require running a PC all day and night ?  (wasting tons of energy).
It is possible to plug something similar into the network directly?

I don't know, but I do have a PC running around the clock - I have a surveillance camera system that is accessible via the Internet going to/through it. So that wouldn't be an issue here. Actually I think a lot more people have their computers always on nowadays with broadband connections, right or wrong though that may be.

    Thanks!

If anyone is interested, there's a new free application for mouse gestures, which unlike StrokeIt works fine under Vista: gMote. Works well with Google Chrome, too. Unfortunately, it also lacks flip back/forward actions.

If you are using Firefox 2 or 3 try the extension All-In-One Gestures - that does have the "rocker" back and forward feature plus you can configure just about any other gesture you wish.

I agree that I could undoubtedly adapt to Photoshop but, yes, I would have a large learning curve.

J-Mac - I have used both PSP (up to v. 9, I had v. 10 but unistalled it almost instantly) and PhotoShop and I really don't think the learning curve between the two apps is that much different.

The great advantage of Photoshop (apart from being a fantastic app) is the huge number of free tutorials on the internet, loads of sites dedicated to Photoshop, thousands of books on the subject and courses galore. It is expensive but you can get it cheaply by registering as student at a recognised institution (it doesn't have to be long term or full time - just an evening class will do at a recognised college - find a photoshop class!. Do check the local conditions at adobe.com by going to the academic shop for your country) and then buy the academic edition which is identical to the commercial product.

    Carol,

I admit that it was quite a while ago that I tried it. I had a very scaled down "Home" version that came with a photo printer or scanner and naturally it kept nagging me to upgrade to a full version. I downloaded the trial then and had a lot of problems getting the hang of it. About a year or so later I ended up going with Jasc PSP7 (Pretty sure it was 7 then). That was a long time ago - maybe 5 or 6 years.

Since then my Vista notebook I got earlier this year came with Photoshp Elements 6 and Adobe Premier Elements 3(? 4?). That looks nice but I keep all my digital pics on my desktop PC. I did move over a sampling of them to the notebook to try out Elements - and I am so accustomed to PSP that I often find myself "lost" in Elements! Oddly I cannot just have it scan for images or import my library of images. It seems that I must import only a folder at a time. I'd have to study the manual to soo if I'm missing something, but it is not very intuitive if you are familiar with working in Paint Shop Pro for years!

    Thanks!

I would love to get BB Flashback, but that initial price - even with the DC discount - is too steep for me, unfortunately. I do have a need for screencasting software but I don't have a big need. And at that price I would pretty much be wasting the license. I won't spend anything for the Express version because it is limited and I would hate to get it because of price alone and find out the limitations are too great for me. (You never really see how the limitations affect you until you purchase, in my experience).

As it is I have to get by with Jing.

I had (and still have) PSP 7, 8, 9, and 10. 7, 8, and 9 were all by Jasc and very good. 10 was Corel's first version and it really sucked. I use 10.3 currently and that's not too bad. I had dropped back to 8 but I actually missed a couple of the effects that I grew to like in 10. And the 10.3 patch pretty much covered most of the really irritating screw-ups from 10.

I hadn't used any Corel software prior to PSP 10, and I sure won't use anymore! BTW, one problem with having to reinstall any of those is that they require you to have the previous version installed in order to register the current version. E.g., PSP 10 will not install unless it sees PSP8 or 9 on the computer already. You can get around this by placing just the .exe file from PSP 8 or 9 into a Jasc folder in Program Files - that's apparently what the PSP 10 (or as Corel likes to call it, PSPX) installer looks at.

I would have jumped to PhotoShop right away but for two reasons: Cost and complexity. PhotoShop is too expensive for how I would use it, and it has a large learning curve, IMO. I also use ACDSee for my photo organization, though that's about all it's good for.
