I'm not sure it's worth looking at the RRER unless you find that the HDD is repeatedly taking to long to serve some data.

I have 1 x WD, 2 x Samsung, 1 x Seagate HDDs, and 1 x Sandisk SSD in my machine - only the Seagate and Sandisk report anything other than zero for RRER and they are the youngest of the HDDs.

The Samsung's and the WD are each 5+y.o., the Seagate ~3 y.o., and the SSD ~3y.o.

Maybe it's better to just use the same metrics that BackBlaze use unless you notice there is a problem with data communication for the HDD.

SMART stats are inconsistent from hard drive to hard drive.

Addendum: On another machine I've got a Seagate 500LT012 (2.5" HDD) that is less than a month old, it reports 34024025 for RRER.  It also has a Sandisk SSD that is about 2y.o. which doesn't report RRER at all.

I think the comment above from the BackBlaze blog is pretty much spot on.

I see one potential problem so far. If the app itself associates itself with the registry the DISM app doesn't add the location of the application to the "ProgID".  When I export and import again on a fresh install one would reasonably assume it would know to open INI with Notepad++ but wouldn't know where N++ is.

Edit the XML file to change the default program for a filetype, (make a backup first), for example:

Code: Text [Select]

1. <Association Identifier=".nfo" ProgId="Applications\notepad.exe" ApplicationName="Notepad" />

Will redirect *.nfo files to be opened in Notepad rather than SystemInfo.

Then import using DISM, log out then in and see what happens when you open a .nfo file.

If an extension doesn't appear in the XML file it probably means that it is set to the default as when Windows was installed, (eg. .txt doesn't appear in my exported file because it still points to Notepad, even though Notepad itself has been replaced by Notepad2).

I'm interested from a purely objective point of view, do you know for a fact that:
a) Where he lives/works/whatever is subject to the same corporate laws that govern the good ol' US of A?
b) He doesn't have permission of the content provider to modify the content of whatever he has got for whatever purpose he's putting it to?

Or have you just jumped to a conclusion without any facts?

If I can instigate action in others by my laziness, well that's a win/win situation in my books   

I didn't want it to make more and more duplicate backups, so I studied the script, downloaded AutoIt, tinkered around, and finally made it so that uninfected files wouldn't be backed up.

It only affects that first sign in screen, (one would hope that you'd be hanging around the minute or so waiting for the computer to boot), any time after when you lock the computer or log out it'll drop back to the lock screen (with whatever wallpaper you've chosen), from there you'll only get the solid colour when you enter your password to unlock/log in again, a matter of a few seconds.

That's the way it's working here in W8.1Pro.

Freakin' escaping DOS characters is nuts  

Couldn't quite get that to work so here's a quick'n'dirty alternative:

RemVBSfHTM.cmd
RemVBSfHTM.exe

The command file walks the directory tree for .htm and .html files and passes them to the executable which writes out a new temp file up to the point it finds <SCRIPT Language=VBScript> (case insensitive), it then writes out the remainder of the line, closes the file, renames the original file to name-old+vbs, and then moves the temporary file into it's place.

Seems to work here OK but I can't try every possible combination of screwed up file.

Put both files in the same directory somewhere, open a CLI and run using: RemVBSfHTM.cmd <path>

Where <path> is the full path to the top level directory of the tree, quoted if it has spaces in the name, eg. RemVBSfHTM.cmd "K:\html junk"

It'll write out to RemVBSfHTM.log if it can't open either the original file for reading, the temporary file for writing, or renaming the original file (in which case it won't rename the temporary file).

So it might pay to make sure all files are not read-only and that you have permission to write to them before running.

Also, even if the HTML doesn't contain the relevant line it'll still get replaced, (I'm lazy).

Just asking but if this is the first sign in screen you come to when you first turn on the computer then you can effectively bypass it by having auto-login set, is that an option or do you want to keep the computer password protected at boot?

Correct me if I'm wrong but if it's added after the </HTML> tag then you only need to read through the files to that point writing each line to a temporary file, then replacing the original at the end.

I could probably do this in a batch file, having it recurse through the whole drive, you'd hit problems if there were any restricted permissions but it seems simple enough.  Might have a look later for the intellectual exercise

More information required, ie. video format, codecs, etc.

eg. I've used this method successfully but it's only good for AVI files which are getting increasingly rare.  But you can always convert to a RAW video AVI, process through VirtualDub, and then encode to final format.

ffmpeg also has a builtin delogo filter if you want to give it a try, I've never used it so don't know how effective it is.

I installed it and deleted one photo from gallery.

Try it with a file deleted from the MicroSD card, (if you have one installed), since KitKat allows files operations on internal storage without too much in the way of problems.

And just as a matter of interest, what version of Android is it running, (Settings->About phone->Android version) ?

Yes, F-Droid is fine if you don't want to be dragged into the Play store all the time.

Agree with eleman here, but I do run a firewall mainly ensure apps do not access networks they're not supposed to, eg. VPN, LAN, Roam, Data.  The one I run is of limited use to you as it requires root access.

Don't know if it's specific to my phone, (which is basically the same as the A6000 with a lower screen resolution), but if you go to Settings->Networked apps you can set which apps you've downloaded have access to Mobile Data and/or Wi-Fi.
