General Software Discussion / Re: Web Mail Recommendation?

Clicking the icon Yahoo E-mail and clicking inbox is all I have to click.
Don't know what you are saying about all those clicks you have to do dantheman.
Also if you have yahoo messenger up and running it notifies of new mail.
And it has good spam blocking.

There are ads on the email main page for yahoo.
But in the email itself There is like one line at the bottom.
And not on every email.
That's my experience with yahoo.

Hotmail is a waste of good bandwidth imo.
Too many hoops to jump through.
I guess you still have to be signed in with 'passport', I don't know

Haven't tryed Gmail but sounds good.

Roadrunner has a feature to view your emails on their servers before downloading them. But once downloaded they are off their server.

And have you tried this-

Start/run/drwtsn32.exe

Uncheck the boxes & Check the # of errors to 0. I also use X-setup to remove the path for the log files.

Googled it to find it.

And Hijack this is a detailed log of what is happening in your computer.
Though I'm not sure it shows the startup and shut down timing.

Can you disable it in administrative services?

Also Tuneup 2007 helped my start up and shut down times.
The first in the list I posted.
It has a start manager but it isn't as deep as it could be.
But it could solve a problem or two.
The disk cleaner is better then ccleaner.
And the Tuneup Registry Cleaner is superb with conflicts.

Worth a try, it can always be undone.

That link is ok Wordzilla,
But it's dealing with Firefox 1.5, currently using Firefox/2.0.0.3.
Not sure on the updates.
Speaking of updates, I assume you have to update Firefox yourself.
Seems there may not be an auto update feature in Firefox.
Which is no problem.
I check filehippo.com regularly.

General Software Discussion / Firefox
« Last post by cmpm on May 16, 2007, 07:59 AM »
All right, been running Firefox for a few days and am really happy with it's speed and simple design.

The more add-ons I add the slower it is on my computer but still faster then ie7.
Firefox gives many options on add-ons that ie7 does not.
Mainly that the list of add-ons is readily available whereas ie7 you must hunt them down.
Although on both ie7 and Firefox there are add-ons that are not expedient.

Firefox is faster I believe because it uses less internal system resources.
Whereas ie7 is seems tied to everything in the computer.
In other words when bringing up ie7, you also start more then needed.
Firefox is a stand alone application and can run with out additional resources from the main operating system.

With Firefox I have 5 add-ons.
With ie7 I only had a few that I intentionally added-iespell and spybot.
The rest is automatic to use ie7.
Of course there is always java that needs to be there for me.
Not sure exactly what add-ons are inherent in Firefox.
Though I see a spell checker is already there and ready.

In conclusion-
I will use Firefox as my main browser.
At this time anyway...lol...Opera and others are looking for attention also.

Thanks.

O and I got ie7 just to stay secure...lol...it was a security update.
Whereas .net is optional software in windows update.
I hardly ever use the tabs.

I have another computer right next to my main one to run different software so I got it split up between the two. A business upgraded and I got their old computers, and I kind of enjoy seeing how much I can get them to handle.

Thought about using Firefox but haven't switched to date.
My oldest son keeps encouraging me to switch though.

No, lanux, it didn't install automatically with my xp cd.
And I have sp2 also.
Perhaps newer xp cds have it, I don't know.

Thanks for the info app, but I think the 2 or 3 programs I tryed isn't worth the trouble. I had downloaded .net just to see what it would do to my computer before and didn't like the results.

Right now I can surf and use what I have about as fast as a better machine, so I'm not going to change it. Java hasn't even been noticed as a slow down and I use it frequently because I use this machine for chat sessions that are java based.

The only program that overloads it is Skype in video mode. And even then it's only a second or two of garbled talk and video. Although that's enough to piss me off..lol:).

Thanks.

Yeah...lol...I tryed to put an add on in and got rejected :)

Maybe I'll experiment with 2.0 a bit more.
But it sure seemed to be the culprit that slowed my browsing.
Going to get a faster machine soon, on a pentium 3 500mhz right now with 640p100 ram.
So I'm like 2 decades behind in computers.
Actually I have a Pent D 3.0 that never even hiccups at anything and has .net 1.0 thru 3.0 on it and has speed to spare.
But my kid uses it for his games and he plays them a lot which is no problem.
I really don't need a lot of power, but apparently I'm going to have to get a better comp.
Watching the price drops closely....

Windows update shows that I need to install it.
But I haven't yet. Nor is it in add-remove programs.
So I assume it's not on my machine.
And when I try to install some programs that require it-usually .net 2.0-I get a notice to install the .net framework and cancel the install.

It's not a big deal but I wanted to know why it's a need to run other programs mainly.

I suppose developers use whatever it does to help with their programs.

Thanks for the reply, I'll check out the wiki on it.

Ok, what's the deal with this .net framework stuff.
I was told I needed it to run ie7, yet I am running ie 7 without it.

Many programs require it for their programs to work.
What does it do? What's it's purpose?

I've added it before and it slowed my browsing down, took it out and back up to speed.

Anyone know anything about this?

Thankyou.

Well it's on the ms website, but only 130 downloads from there.
If it's the same add-on.
No reviews, I think I'll wait a bit to try it.

http://windowsmarket...3407728#productSpecs

Shoot win xp took like three years to actually get most of it's problems solved.

Now they introduce vista..o boy...

Anyways....I don't understand why all the posting on forums when it's free. What is the purpose? I don't know.

And yes it's a direct connect to the internet as well as Google's toolbar. Google has a good reputation to my knowledge of keeping things secure.

Don't know anything about this IE7Pro deal. But that don't mean much anyway either....lol....cuz I don't know much about what data it will collect.

Think I'll wait this one out. But that's me. Besides all that it does can be done with other programs as well I'd bet.

Most if not all programs here at this site are posted by the author.
When no one knows about it being in existence.

Not putting IE7Pro in a bad light - just cautious.
It's very new and I am too tired to mess with something that is unproven by outside sources.

Though I do respect dk70's posts, I'd like to see more end users report on it's stability and security.

Hi dk70,

Ok....seems to conflict with java run time enviroment.

And it wasn't meant as a warning, but as a problem to solve.
But I do appreciate the notice on my wording.

As with all add-ons they do present various things to deal with.
I am wondering how much more resources it would use since I use a P3 at this time.

The only add-on I use is iespell.

General Software Discussion / Re: Caller Id Programs
« Last post by cmpm on May 08, 2007, 01:22 AM »
Here's a few more to check out.

Initially, years ago I wanted to track and log and put in a phone book all my calls for my business with a couple of clicks.

At the time there was Phone Plus, ID Commander and Call Center.
Call Center - a program I can't find anymore - didn't work very good and ID Commander was rather unreliable back then.

So I went with Phone Plus which was $15 unlimited upgrades, now $25. If Phone Plus would add hyperlinking to it's notes, then with a click or two you could have a map or shortcut to any thing about the phone number.

Anyways here's a list of some more free ones That were posted on this site. Or linked to a page with a list.

Well...Call Alert does not work whereas Yac does on the same computer and modem. Perhaps I'm missing a setting or something. The modem is caller id enabled and Call Alert does recognize it and use it but no go.

Here's another one, It's free also.

ID Commander.
