that 'e texteditor' looks pretty amazing - check out the main screencast on the home page if you are curious. i think i'll buy it and i'm not even much of a text editor type person.

that's fantastic information, AndyM.

and you hear a flushing sound when you empty it.

sound! now that is going too far.

that's simply great, ak_, the send to method is good enough and the icon is a nice touch - with the dummy ;D.

is it too much to ask how you would use fast explorer instead of the send to method. maybe a screengrab of the settings would be enough???

perhaps someone will be able to modify your script to include the options mouser suggested, like the add date and choose name or type new name.

1956
the ahk and fast explorer combination sounds like a solution to me.

ah, good idea to link to the other grids. and it does make a lot of difference to see the grid layouts - thanks for the images.

Coding Snacks / Re: auto color 'new folder' icon to make it quick to find
« Last post by nudone on July 28, 2007, 12:15 PM »
yeah, i'm just lazy. i've got folder marker installed but i seem to forget about it. i think i'll try folderico as it looks like it's got a more direct access to the coloured folders.

edit:

just removed 'folder marker' and now using 'folderico'. folderico seems to work a lot smoother - it doesn't cause a screen refresh to happen on my desktop like folder marker did. there is also less menu navigation involved with folderico (the coloured folders were at another sub level within folder marker).

so thanks for that recommendation, Nighted.

any chance of a small screenshot or diagram that clearly shows what the grid looks like - please. it will help everyone before downloading the grid(s).

So, right click on a FILE, and say "Make Folder and put file(s) in it.."
and it would make a new folder (maybe just make a folder with same name as program minus extension, OR pop up a dialog with default name being this), and then move the file into that folder.  An option to add the date to the folder might be nice too.

not sure how clear that needs to be - it has nothing to do with zip files or any other archives - zip was just a missleading example for the extension in the original request.

ljbirns, contextmagic sounds like it's almost there. it doesn't do exactly what mouser describes - the crucial thing to me is the number of steps and the autonaming of the folder. my understanding is that the idea is to create a containing folder for a specific file (or set of files) that is at the same level of the file - and it's all done with the minimum number of clicks. contextmagic is perhaps close enough - i think i'll try it.
1962
do you use dreamweaver, f0dder?

it's always been a bit of a moaning swine from my experience. i think i'm right in saying it's a common problem with the program.
1963
it depends on which version of the original request you want to follow.

the extract create folder method is common as pointed out by Clif.

mouser describes how it would work - you have a file, not an archive, and you want the file to be placed into an automatically named new folder - all done with a simple right click menu selection on the file.

so, instead of doing this.

1. create new folder.

2. rename new folder.

3. put file into newly created folder.

(4. perhaps open new created folder to reveal file inside it.)

you do this instead...

1. right click on file.

2. select the 'put file in new folder' option from the menu.

at least, that's how i understand the process.

;D ;D ;D

I wonder why would anyone want an icon of an empty/full toilet. Recycle bin?
that was the idea. but like all of the icons and cursors i did, they were used for about 1 week and then went back to the default plain cursors and icons that come with windows. that kind of explains why i stopped making them.

the type thefritz_j has done are far more practical so i'd favour those over the novelty image ones nowadays.

Coding Snacks / auto color 'new folder' icon to make it quick to find
« Last post by nudone on July 28, 2007, 03:56 AM »
i'll make this request and hope that someone just suggests a util that already does this - or a better method of what i'm describing.

i tend to make a 'new folder' and throw the things into it that i'm currently working on - kind of like a quick temp folder to isolate a few files from a bunch of others.

the important thing is speed - i'm only using this folder temporarily (perhaps) and i just want to get things done quickly so i don't rename the new folder - i just leave it as 'new folder'.

this is fine, except for when there are several, possibly hundreds, of other folders at the same level of the 'new folder'. the problem is when using software and browsing to the 'new folder' i have to scan through the list of other folders until i get to 'N' for 'new folder'. perhaps i'm making a big deal out of nothing but if the 'new folder' was a different colour, i.e. now yellow, then i wouldn't have to scan through all the other folders looking for 'N', instead i'd just look for the different colour.

an alternative would be for windows to name a new folder '! New Folder' with the ! at the front so that the newly created folder appeared first in the list of other folders - thereby making it simple to find.

i appreciate this is long winded. in fact, this is kind of insane, i've just spent more time writing this than it will take for me to manually input the '!' character into the 'new folder' name field when it is created. okay, fine, i'll go and bang my head against the wall for a few minutes.
1967
i'd also like to see this done.

here are a couple of gifs showing the animation in the cursors above:

babycrusher.gif facehuggeregg.gif (the animated cursors move a lot quicker than these gif files.)

here's a set of animated cursor hands. again, they were done a long time ago so they don't have shadows or anything fancy. the hands do little animations with things like the fingers moving. just subtle stuff mainly.

nice cursors - nice and visible, thefritz_j.

you've prompted me to dig up some old things i did when windows 95 was all the rage, i.e. don't expect fancy colours and alpha transparency.

nudcon-set01.png

i'm sure there are millions of these things now but back then i couldn't find an arcade nor a toilet icon :D. there are a few more practical cursors i can upload later but i'm wondering why there aren't any cody icons or cursors - would anyone like a cody set?

(i still think the baby crusher is a classic. perhaps i'll have to upload an animated gif version of it.) edit: gifs posted below to show animation.

;D i think that might be one of cody's relatives, mouser will be probably be able to say which one (looks a bit like cody's uncle but without his hat).

it may well be cody - he does travel far and wide, which many DC members will confirm.

(just a reminder: upload the zip but provide a nice looking png file of the icon(s) and cursor(s), etc. so that we can see ALL of the content inside the zip.)

i'm looking forward to seeing your work.

dreamweaver will sometimes complain that i'm low on system memory - even though i'm obviously not. is this the sort of thing this solution will fix?

General Software Discussion / Re: 45 best Freeware Design programs
« Last post by nudone on July 25, 2007, 04:03 AM »
Nicely laid out. Here are a few programs that are far superior to those listed in the article (imo).

Examples:

Screen Ruler: PMeter
Font Viewer: Font Xplorer
Colour Picker: Color Cop
Screen Capture: Cropper or ScreenshotCaptor

thanks for listing those, Nighted. you are obviously on the lookout for the best in these categories as i remember you mentioning some before - these appear to be new (except for font xplorer) and certainly the best i've seen.

thanks to surftwo also, i think there are one or two things i'll be trying/using from the snap2objects list.

this sounds like it could be a whole new paradigm in software pricing. it's beyond donationware - it's more like revengeware or psychopathware (insert better *****ware here).

yet again, donationcoder proves to be the first in pioneering software, pricing and distribution methods.

excellent, mouser

General Software Discussion / Re: Maxthon 2 Released
« Last post by nudone on July 24, 2007, 01:20 AM »
i'll stick with maxthon 1.6.1

lets me use and arrange all the toolbars and buttons that i want. loads in faster than opera and firefox and just seems to have things worked out better. no doubt i could find plugins for firefox that would provide the same functionality (and more) but why bother when it will still load in slower - plus i'll have to spend all that time looking and testing the plugins. (load times are important to me because i do a lot of opening and closing; maybe that's a bad habit.)

okay, my web pages are rendered crap because of the ie engine - but not very often. perhaps i'll give maxthon 2 a try again but the beta didn't do it for me - simply depends on how much i can customise the layout...
