ill look at the code and see what i can find.

what you could do though is something that would let us know if skajfes was right about the execution method:

try the different options in the General tab for execution method:

coderunner -- can you try telling far to open folders by double clicking them.. see if that works reliably?

coderunner: hrmm, I have no plugins installed I believe.  I haven't added any since my
initial install and my plugins list is empty in the configuration dialog.  Are there default
ones that I can disable?

nope, that's fine, and makes it possible to rule out the possibility that it's a plugin.

ok here's a really important question:
does the same folder sometimes open and sometimes not? or do some folders always fail to open?

From Wired.com article, with videos, on master lock picker Marc Weber Tobias:

The problem, if you're a safe company or a lock maker, is that Tobias makes it all public through hacker confabs, posts on his Security.org site, and tech blogs like Engadget. He views this glasnost as a public service. Others see a hacker how-to that makes The Anarchist Cookbook read like Betty Crocker. And where Tobias sees a splendid expression of First Amendment rights, locksmiths and security companies see a criminal finishing school. Tobias isn't just exposing problems, they say. He is the problem.
But forget bike locks and hotel room safes: These days, Tobias is attacking the lock famous for protecting places like military installations and the homes of American presidents and British royals.

Between stabs at his salad, Tobias hands me his latest idea of fun: nearly 300 pages of self-published hacker-porn detailing his attack on the allegedly uncrackable Medeco high-security lock. "Trust me, this will cause a goddamned riot!" he says, dabbing at tears of joy with a paper napkin. "Oh yeah, this is way, way bigger than the liquid explosives thing!" And he's right, it is bigger--and with way, way bigger consequences.

well you have 12000+ "new" emails on your server.. something is up.. i wonder if that alone would kill the mail program.

welcome coderunner

can i clarify what your saying happens:
  • you type in some location (like c:\windows\)
  • then you do what? hit enter to open it?
  • and nothing happens?
  • and then you repeat this process several times and eventually it does open?

if so, can i ask:
what happens when you hit enter (or double click) to open the folder -- does farr dissapear or just stay there?
do you have a custom file explorer set in your farr options?
do you have any plugins installed -- if so, if you remove them does the error cease?

i know you were trying antispam sniper, have you tried disabling that and see if it works. if it does work after that,
then do what i suggested before, and configure all your accounts to NOT delete from the server.

a few people are reporting problems with this -- we're going to try to disable the changes or make them more benign while we study the issue further.

six new topics turned up in the Google reader feed yesterday that I can't access, and don't appear on the forum Topic list.
unrelated -- those were actually posts from Paul Keith that were posted all at once, but he and i talked and thought it would be better to post one at a time so people didn't feel overloaded.

Some people who have been used to surfing the dc forum without cookies enabled are reporting getting the new error page and having some trouble enabling cookies or otherwise getting pages to load.  We'll see if we can make this a bit smoother.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Runtime Error!
« Last post by mouser on May 31, 2009, 12:10 PM »
if i use Locate32 plugin and I left click on any result I get an odd error (does not crash FARR); if I hit down arrow or enter key then the big runtime error appears and FARR crashes.

you are encountering an fscript error that was recently reports and is being fixed.. it's a problem that is happening because of a conflict between the fscript system and other plugins.  ecaradec is working on it as we speak. stay tuned!

yes.

gothic and i are sitting here experimenting with blocking access to the forum with old SESSIONID info in urls.
please let me know if anyone gets errors explicitly about this while they are surfing the site.

General Software Discussion / Re: How do you organize your email?
« Last post by mouser on May 30, 2009, 07:03 PM »
I was just watching gothic use claws mail (formerly sylpheed claws mentioned above by housetier) and it's pretty impressive and looks almost identical to thebat, which is my email program of choice on windows.  Gothic says it's probably more a program for power users, but if you are a fan of thebat on Windows and are looking for an alternative to thunderbird on linux, it's definitely worth a look.

awesome! at least now we know the root of the problem for other people with fscript.. maybe we can figure out an automated way for fscript to detect and alert the user what they need to solve if they are one of the rare people with this problem?

General Software Discussion / Re: What the hell is OpenCandy?
« Last post by mouser on May 30, 2009, 08:57 AM »
This thread is going in circles..  To get mad about a single key in the registry, or a DLL file that is part of the installer and does nothing but suggest another program you can opt-in to install, is really misplaced concern in my view.  All this hand wringing is best saved for *real* adware, spyware, hidden installs, etc. Stuff that really *does* install programs behind the scenes that users don't want.

As someone pointed out to me in a personal message -- this thread is starting to feel like the one single company trying to do this in a reasonable fashion is being made the scapegoat for the worst behaviors of the worst offenders in the spyware world.  There are real bad culprits out there, but this isn't one of them, and i think we are getting to the point where this thread is making things more confusing to readers rather than educating them.

Regardless.. maybe it's time we wound down the repeated posts on this thread that are merely restating the same points.  Maybe i'm guilty of that too, so i'll not be repeating myself again.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Alias: WolframAlpha Search
« Last post by mouser on May 30, 2009, 08:43 AM »
the use of $$u1 instead of $$1 when calling the url tells farr to urlencode the arguement which survives the browser call properly.
