As far as I know Windows really likes to manage a swap-file (pagefile.sys), no matter the amount of RAM it has available. So if you have enough, it is not a bad idea to configure the pagefile into this RAM Disk.

And as a matter of fact, the original YouTube video tutorial suggested adding a Pagefile into the Ramdisk itself, which is what I did:

There's a user manual available for RamDisk.

The Driver has been written to WDM standards and creates a low-level disk object that Windows
Device Manager and Disk Management are able to "see" and manage.  You can partition, format,
mount a volume, and assign multiple drive letters to RAMDisk (but only if you would know how to
do those things with a regular disk, RAMDisk does not do it for you).

Upon successful Start of the RAMDisk, a kernel level driver (RAMDisk.sys) is loaded into the
Windows/System32/drivers folder.  This driver will be available to Windows each time RAMDisk
starts.  It is removed when RAMDisk is stopped.

On the other hand, if you only have 1 GB RAM, you might be better off NOT creating a RAMdisk.  My impression is that a RAM disk works best in addition to sufficient normal RAM, but I'm no expert.  I'll let others comment.

Stephen, another thing you could do is figure out which Windows services can be changed from Automatic to either Manual or Disabled.  Services can noticeably affect boot-up time and hog RAM.  Tweaking services, while requiring care (definitely set a System Restore point first), could definitely improve your experience on 1GB of RAM.  I've also read that Win7 Aero is a RAM-hog.

Be advised, I watched several YouTube videos on installing, and apparently it's quite critical that you disable your Page File entirely before installing Ramdisk and configuring it (disable Windows automatic handling of Page File size, and manually set it to 0).  Also, it was recommended, by consensus that you not check any of the checkboxes under the Options tab when you run the RamDisk configuration utility for the first time.

I'm showing RAM Transfer Speed (Hardware) of 2890 Mb/sec.  Is that good for these system specs?

I installed RAMdisk driver-level utility and configured it for 2 GB.  Re-running NovaBench, my benchmark score rose from 382 to 425.  The computer seems to handle noticeably snappier, though perhaps that is merely my expectations affecting my perceptions.  Has anyone else used RAMdisk, or something similar.  Your results?

Thanks Deozaan.  Yes, I forgot that Unity 3D is C#-compatible.  Looks impressive and highly capable.  Quite a learning curve for me personally, but then, I haven't done 3D programming before.  Probably wouldn't be too bad for someone with more experience.

And whadyaknow?  I found a bug and have released the fix as version 1.0.4.6.  You can view the text help file using the Help menu if you want to see the release notes.  In case you don't want to have to look it up, though, here's a screenshot:

I've released version 1.0.4.5, which adds the following two features:

  • At program startup, the program checks online for a newer version.  If it finds a newer available version, it offers the user the option (via Yes/No messagebox) to launch a download of the newer version in their default browser.  This differs from previous releases, in which the newer version was downloaded directly by the Hangman program itself.  By launching in the browser, I'm able to specify a special sort of link that my PHP ccount script can leverage to keep a more accurate count of the total number of downloads the program has received.
  • At program startup, if this is the nth time the program has executed on the user's machine (currently n = 12), the program will execute a one-time-only prompt for a donation -- which the user can easily opt to ignore.  The is the only time the program will ever prompt regarding a donation.  If the user responds negatively, s/he is still free at some future point to manually initiate a donation by using the Donate button in the About dialog.

@mouser:  If you think this is becoming divisive we should probably lock the thread.

My impression is not that mouser feels it has become divisive, but that it could, and he's wanting to keep things friendly.

One lesson I learned years ago: when I'm around friends and family (especially over a Thanksgiving meal), don't discuss political/religious things unless you want an argument.  Of course, this is because my family members have such diverse views and strongly held opinions.

FBackup 4 will backup whatever directory and/or files you want, and you can, optionally, schedule it to repeat at certain intervals.  It's freeware.

If you think about how different/improved computing is now than it was twenty years ago, just imagine how much further improved/powerful it will be in another decade or two, given the increasing velocity of innovation.

But Stone 1 has been out there for quite some time already, so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Stone 2 tellme
It's feature set is already rock-solid Cool

True.  But, as I understand it, the folks at Redmondstone have a motto: "A rolling stone gathers no moss".  I'm sure they're actively developing Stone 1.0's successor...

I do keep a .357 Magnum revolver loaded with hollow-points in my car glovebox.  The car stays locked, even when I'm at home.

Be careful of that and check the rules of your local municipality.  That can be considered carrying concealed, and if you get stopped, no matter if it is or not, it does tend to make the constabulary a bit twitchy.

In my locale, you have to make two distinct movements to obtain the weapon in the vehicle, in order for it to not be considered concealed.  (1) Open glovebox (2) reach into glovebox and get gun... as opposed to concealed being one movement: reach under seat and grab gun.

a weapon of any kind is and should be an absolute last resort. Much like 40hz my preferred weapons are tact & humor, as defusing a situation is really the safest option for all parties.

+1.

As a licensed counselor who often is called upon to help people with anger management and conflict resolution, I complete agree with this.  I would also add that often people's judgement of the need for deadly force is in error.  Anger compromises good judgment.  Hindsight usually reveals an emotionally heightened form of decision-making was involved in the decision to use deadly force.  This is why it's so critical to keep your cool and try to think ahead and in terms of weighing consequences versus safety, when contemplating violence.

Back to Flatpress for a moment: I want to let everyone know that I have Beyond Compare 3 and a system of chained batch files working great for backing up my Flatpress blog daily, or at least a couple times weekly.  I haven't yet automated the BC-work, but it can be done -- BC includes commandline parameter support and scripting support.  Once my online Flatpress files are mirrored to my backup drive, I have automated the copying of the backed-up directory to multiple attached drives and to my Dropbox directory, so that it'll be uploaded/synced.  Handy stuff.

Upshot: it's relatively easy (and fast: only a few kilobytes every couple days to be backed up, depending on how much you post) to backup a Flatpress blog.

I have a shotgun -- which I keep unloaded, and in a zipped cloth case, stored in our basement.  There is no ammunition in the house.  We have five children.  I keep a nightstick by my bed.  I'd rather take my chances defending us with that, than have one of my children killed in a firearms mishap.
