Living Room / Re: Does my future pc suck ?
« Last post by Lashiec on August 21, 2007, 11:07 AM »
Yes, it totally SUCKS ;D

Actually, my computer is pretty much that (less processor speed and more HDD). Let's see... I suggest you a bit more HDD for future proof. If you upgrade to Vista sometime, you'll thank it. 160 or 320 GB will suffice, and they're pretty affordable. I would recommend against 4 GB for now, unless you plan to go Vista (and the x64 route as well). I side with f0dder in the Core 2 Duo option, although it would cost you a bit more as motherboards for Intel CPUs tend to be more expensive that those designed for AMD. Totally against nVidia graphics. Unless you want to go with a DirectX 10 compatible card, I suggest ATI as it totally obliterates the competition ;). Also, don't go the SLI or Crossfire route, unless you plan to add some specific functionality (for example, running more than two monitors at once) or gaming at insane resolutions. IMHO it's a total waste of money.

Let's move to better things. What about CPU cooling, case, PSU, DVD writers? Are you going to use some older parts? In that case, could you please give us some insight about them?

As for monitors... if this was a enthusiast forum, people would be suggesting 1400 € monitors, but this is not the case :). If you can see monitors in action, the merrier. Most LCDs are using TN film, which makes them quite less accurate when it comes to color reproduction (they use 6 bits instead of 8 bits). Paying more will yield (theoretical) better results. Personally, I feel that LCDs are quite good now, even the cheaper ones, but for a graphic illustrator like you, it could be a different thing.

Living Room / Re: How do you organise your 'My Documents' folder
« Last post by Lashiec on August 20, 2007, 05:11 PM »
My data is all dumped in the D: drive (the biggest one), and following a system similar to that proposed by Microsoft with the folders that come as default with Windows, only that not everyone has a "Mi" (My) prefix. It actually take some time to arrange it like I wanted, and now is pretty much to my liking, except for the damn folder called "Universidad" (University), that's where all my papers, coding, problems, etc. go. It's right but not right, it's difficult to explain but there's something that troubles me, not regarding organization, which is pretty good, I even came with a esque-tagging scheme, but the name of the primary folders, which are organized by subjects and years (ya know, every subject is taught at a particular academic year) bugs me. Maybe I'll do some renaming in the future.

Is it me or didn't we have something similar to this thread in the past?

Pretty good. I agree with most points, which I feel are annoying when they're present in a blog, particularly flair (hate all those icons around) and blogging about blogging complete with mindless link propagation (most of the times they're directly intertwined). The last point is the one I feel most difficult to avoid, as these days everybody seems to be talking about everything, and it's difficult to come up with something new or a fresh and thoughtful look onto something "old".

Not so keen on point 8. Of course, most blogs about personal matters are plain boring and uninteresting. Perfect examples: Xiaxue or Dooce, perhaps two of the most dreadful and frivolous blogs I've ever encountered. And look, they're quite successful despite this. On the other hand, one of the blogs I visit daily (and the number is small) is written by a girl a bit younger than me, talking about things about his personal life, but without revealing every simple detail about it, pretty elegant and well written, a delight :-*

EDIT: I forgot to say that the image that comes with point 12 it's hilarious

General Software Discussion / CastleCops Wiki - A complete malware resource
« Last post by Lashiec on August 18, 2007, 07:38 PM »
Although it has been mentioned sometimes in loose posts on the forums, I thought I should made a post about it as lately people around here seems to be on a stir about security software for various reasons. The CastleCops wiki, which is the companion to the main CastleCops site, well known through the Internet, houses some amazing knowledge about malware, how it works and (more important) how to clean it. Not only that, but also information on other matters related to security and privacy on the Internet, as well as insight over quite some security software, including comparisons between the most popular tools around. I hope it will clear most of the questions about this tricky part of computing.

Last minute edit: Most of the content is still flagged as 'beta', and some pages need updating.

Thanks for the tip, PhilB66! I overlooked that option, which provides protection about bad plugins in Opera. They should add one for Firefox as well, they had a list of questionable extensions for it at MozillaZine.

In honor of Ken, i have blogged my diagram.  I can only imagine what people who just visit the blog and don't follow the discussions here will think of it.. :tellme:

I don't know what they'll think of the diagram, but I know what they'll think about the author ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: The software awards scam
« Last post by Lashiec on August 17, 2007, 01:12 PM »
My vote goes for FileHippo. Tiny site, but you've got the comfort to know the software really works, as they actually test the software on a VM (evident by some of their shots), and they only add quality software. They don't have awards, though :)

General Software Discussion / Re: What do you think of PCTools' Spyware Doctor?

Well, about those security software options, you can use SpywareBlaster, SpyBot and Spyware Terminator combined to achieve maximum protection about ActiveX threats on IE, but ONLY in IE. With Opera and Firefox you must rely on realtime scanners, or use another of the options offered in form of extensions or plugins. But then again, they're more resistant to those attacks (but not watertight, of course).

About realtime scanners, my choice would be Windows Defender, as long as you opt out of SpyNet subscription. There's nothing wrong about it, except for its EULA, which it's cryptic and doesn't make feel good about it (particularly, the section talking about the submission of personal information by accident). Spyware Terminator seems to be better when it comes to catch bad guys, but some things about it still make me uneasy to recommend it. And of course, practice safe hex ;)

Finally, if you want to pay, my choice would be CounterSpy, AVG Anti-Spyware or a-squared, before Ad-Aware. Ad-Aware is still good when it comes to some things, but the competitors have surpassed him both in scope of the malware, and in power. As a free scanner, it's still good for a second opinion. Ad-Watch could be replaced with either some proxy like The Proxomitron or Privoxy (heavy things when it comes to bandwidth usage, slowing down browsing) or use something like Adblock Plus in Firefox or Opera's Content Blocker. Might be something similar for IE, but I don't use it too much these days, except for Windows Update.

EDIT: That post on Shitware made me laugh ;D

Developer's Corner / Re: Best Language for Employability?
« Last post by Lashiec on August 16, 2007, 11:56 AM »
One of our biggest sources for entry-level applicants is Rutgers University, as they're just 10 minutes from here. I was surprised to learn that the only language that a CompSci student there must learn is Java.

It's the same in the UK nowadays - people can get a computer science degree having learned just one language and UML and side, easy subjects (multimedia???). And when you talk to them they haven't ever learned anything on their own. These people might be useful in a large corporate machine, but they certainly are no use to someone with a team of a dozen where all need to pull some of their weight)

What the... Where are those universities? I want to finish my degree there! UML, Java and multimedia... easy! </sarcasm>

Developer's Corner / Re: Dev-C++ Discontinued?
« Last post by Lashiec on August 16, 2007, 11:45 AM »
wxDevC++ is as good as Dev-C++ for newcomers. The only difference is that it also allows tinkering and designing interfaces using wxWidgets (that is, GUI programming). Is it worth? Probably or maybe not. In reality, the innards of the software are more or less the same as Dev-C++, so it's your choice.

Reminder: You also have CodeBlocks available, programmed in C++ and using wxWidgets. Right now, the stable version is quite outdated, but they're releasing nightly builds almost daily, with huge improvements all around over the "official" version, so you could give it a try. SkyIDE is also another option.

Cool! And anyone can write its own plugins, as they're simple XML files. Might make my future backup routine a bit more clean.

Taiyo Yuden manufactures for a lot of brands these days. Have a peak at some drive test in CDFreaks and you'll encounter quite some discs from them.

General Software Discussion / Re: XP or Vista user — take the poll!
« Last post by Lashiec on August 14, 2007, 07:59 PM »
Why is the media starting to treat XP as a dead OS? Is some higher-up trying to push Vista or something? XP is now in the best moment of his life, when the hardware available is far more than capable of running it at top speeds and with excellent compatibility as well.

And they continue to advertise those damn RAM optimizers... When are they going to learn that they're useless? And with RAM sticks so cheap, it's even more out of the question. And that Auslogics defragger is not exactly recommendable. So, 2 GB of RAM, JKDefrag and CCleaner. Now this is a real recipe.

(Armando, no offense intended)

Well, it's McAfee. The software is good, that can't be denied, but it suffers from "Nortonitis". Oh, cool, they require you to sign up with an AOL Mail account! Go for a free alternative if you can, or with payware quality like NOD or the same Kaspersky.

The Coolermaster Centurion 5 is a staple in cases. It's one of the most recommended in the hardware sites, for its price and good results. It's not the best, but it's quite good on its own.

Almost any hardware inventory software will tell the temps inside your computer. That depends on the sensors that come with the motherboard more than the software used, although you'll probably had to do some registry tweaking to get some temps reading from the graphic card. And the CD with the motherboard's drivers will carry MSI's own software for temps reading, overclocking, fan speed adjusting, etc. They use a GUI ugly as hell, very graphical indeed, so use SpeedFan, Everest Ultimate or whatever you fancy.
