 8) Thanks for the kind words guys.

Just thought I should mention...I didn't post this as a "Please feel sorry for me", rather "This is where I have been, and this is why" :)

Thought I should mention in-case anybody thinks otherwise hehe  :-*

Jeez, only read this now (had it opened a while).
Eh, it's nice to see you again Stephen, but I wish for you it was under better circumstances.
It probably sounds a bit lame, but I really hope things work out okay (things can always work out okay - sometimes you've got to add an eventually to that though...)

:) Everything's on the mend now (It seems) So yeah, lifes looking better!

Hey guys,

Wow, it feels like forever since I last opened up a new post window here on DonationCoder with intent on actually making a post.

I know I dissapeared without really saying much to anybody, and without really explaining why.  Well...For those that are bothered...Here it is in a nutshell.

When I first left DonationCoder, it was because of personal problems between me and my better half...I was spending WAY to much time online, and letting my actual relationship deteriorate.  Obviously, once I had realized this, I had to take drastic action in order to resolve things between me and Hayley.  I did so, by shutting my PC down, unhooking all the wires, and packing all of our things to go on a trip (Me, Hayley and our doggy; Munch).

Well...I wish life was as simple as this...Although the first few weeks of this was probably the greatest we had had in such a long time....However, medical problems arose (with myself) for which I am still undergoing in-depth tests for as my Doctors really don't know what is going on.

Oh how I wish that this was the end of the tale...unfortunately however...That isn't so.

A few weeks ago, we got a call to tell us that Hayley's big brother had gone missing and because of this, had been reported missing with the police, so we came straight home to be with the family...Facebook pages and such where launched to help us try locate him...then 6 days later, we got a call from the police saying they had found a body in the local canal.  Needless to say, it was him, and after formal identification and such we had to go to the funeral and deal with a LOT of family troubles (feuds and such).

Well...Thats as short as I could possibly make it.

I hope this goes some way to explaining where I have been for the past (I don't even know how long it has been).

-Stephen

^ yeah, but I didn't think you were serious either ;)

I can see (and understand) that you see this as a success,
but I'm a bit disillusioned that this got moved.

I was successful in annoying mouser, but didn't honestly think it would get moved...renamed maybe, but not moved :(

Living Room / Raspberry Pi being manufactured in the UK
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on September 06, 2012, 05:14 PM »
pi.jpg

Since it's debut in February 2012, the Raspberry Pi has taken the technological world by storm.  From personal tinkering, to science experiments, and even schools using them to teach students the principles of computing and engineering; the possibilities seem endless.

Now, it has been revealed, that they will be manufactured in the UK.  This (for me anyway) is a huge move forward, as it gets the UK back into the industry of building useful things.

Before now every one of the credit-card sized machines have rolled off production lines in Chinese factories.

Everybody in the world, knows, and understands why, most tech products are produced in countries such as China (The reason being, is that it is CHEAP!).  However, a deal that has been agreed and signed between Premier Farnell (The distributor for the 'Pi') and Sony (Who will manufacturer them) will see 300,000 of these innovative and useful boards, created here in the UK (Wales to be precise).

The UK-made Raspberry Pis will be assembled at Sony UK Technology's factory in Pencoed, South Wales. About 30 jobs will be created as a result of the deal which will mean most of the Pis being distributed by Premier Farnell will be made in Britain.

One can only speculate on the quality increase that will come from this deal, but I would imagine that Western Manufacturing laws, would dictate that these products will be much higher quality.

Do you own a Pi?  Think this is going to do the product some good?  Let us know!

Living Room / Fake User Reviews...The unwinding scandal
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on September 04, 2012, 05:47 PM »
rof.jpg

Now, we all know that User Reviews have always been a dubious thing to see, and we could never know if they where legitimate or not.  Now, it has been uncovered, that big-name authors RJ Ellory and Stephen Leather have been writing fake reviews, promoting their own books, whilst slamming other authors work.  Now, that's not to say they are the ONLY people doing this.  It is well known that reviews are easy to buy online, be it video, or written.  One can buy these on sites such as Fiverr, and as the name suggests, they cost $5 each.  I am sure, that somewhere, somehow, you can get them for much cheaper.

Do people even read user reviews?

In short, yes.  I, myself, have dismissed an app on Android based on the comments of users.  I do this even when I know that user reviews are mostly fake.  Now, I don't know the true figures of Fake vs Real, and I am not honestly sure that anybody really does.  However, I still read them, and somewhat trust them.

Gary Marshall over at TechRadar writes this week about why these fake reviews are so prominent -- in short, because they work so well:
You can see the appeal. Imagine you have a restaurant, and in these tough times you need every customer you can get - so why not try to steal your rivals' customers? Why not pay a few friends to go to your rival's restaurant, booking via one of the restaurant booking sites, and then leave a damning online review for other would-be diners?

It wouldn't cost much, and if it persuades even a couple of people to go to your restaurant rather than theirs then it's been a good investment.

That story from TechRadar seems to focus heavily on reviews for books, however, it is easily transferred to any other service or product.

Here's Eileen Brown at zdnet writing about Google's attempts to catch fake reviews:
A new software algorithm was announced last week at the World Wide Web 2012 conference in Lyon, France.  It tries to detect groups of spammers working together to influence products.

Opinion spamming is quite common. Have a look at any successful web sites with multiple reviews on the site. Some reviewers try to game the system by promoting or demoting target products. Groups of reviewers can work collaboratively to write fake reviews and can often take total control of the sentiment of the site.

Eileen makes a point of showing two reviews, one real, and one fake, both VERY similar to each other.  I don't know about you, but I can't tell which is fake, and which is real!

Do you trust user reviews?  Do you have a technique on how to filter fake from real?  I would love to hear your take on this!

www.opera.com

I suggest this as a strong fan of Opera AND someone who has been stung by Firefox's upgrade policy, my hatred of Chromes constant crashes and my hate of IE.

I am sure many people here would recommend other browsers, so, don't take my word for it, plenty of opinions on browsers can be found right here on DonationCoder :)

Welcome to DoCo by the way :) - Nice to see a new face.

It's amusing to me that Apple has painted themselves into a corner with their "innovative design" when the future of personal computer interfaces and functionality will probably more closely resemble something like this:

That was a bloody fantastic, and a damn good watch!

On a less 'funny' note...I am getting sick of this Apple vs Samsung shit...

Anybody else know that 26% of the price of any iPhone or iPad goes DIRECTLY to Samsung, duye to an $11BILLION dollar contract Apple have with them to produce all the hardware for iShit...

Perhaps Samsung should tell Apple where to stick their contract...Can't sue somebody for copying products you can't make ^_^

I know neither company is innocent in this...but Apple sure does get on my tits.

Reminds me of those Scottish postcards that say there's a great view from here, when you can see the view...  Yet you live south of the border!  :)

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay south :p - I'm in East Lancashire (North West England) :D
