When you create an image, the whole concept is to take everything.  If you don't want that, you are making a plain file backup.

hiberfile.sys and the paging file are often excluded by default by this type of software when creating an image file

I contacted Aomei re this. English wasn't so good, but IIUC:
Aomei Backupper does *not* copy the paging file, but does copy everything else.
There are no options (in any version) to exclude files when creating an image.

It's not much more expensive now on amazon uk (~315$) and you should be in a better position if anything screws up:
https://www.amazon.c...Google+Nexus+5X+16GB
EDIT// maybe they wont deliver to Ireland?
EDIT2// nope, wont deliver to Ireland, what a *$%§"...

(I was going to recommend german amazon, it's often cheaper than the uk one, and usually delivers to ireland -- but neither true in this case.)

A bad year for music.  First Bowie, and now Prince.  Two innovators in music in the same year.   :(

wow, that was a surprise  :(

EDIT// realised that might have sounded a bit flippant. I really was stunned by that one, I guess because of his age, and not having heard of any illness etc.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Capture PDFs
« Last post by tomos on April 20, 2016, 04:28 AM »
I'm finding that pdf docs created in Chrome using either Microsoft to pdf OR Bullzip, now only create images of the page... ie: not searchable pdf docs nor can you hihlite text.
Spoke to the author of Bullzip and he basically confirmed that's where it's going with pdf software.
Solution is to buy a commercial copy of Adobe pdf OR use Microsoft Edge, which produces searchable text docs but has other issues!

be interesting to see if that the case with all PDF creators -- do you know is the problem with Chrome specifically, or more with the PDF printer?

There are many other PDF printers out there. I'm using an older version of PDFCreator (possibly comes with OpenCandy) which has no problem printing a 'proper' PDF via PaleMoon:

General Software Discussion / Re: Vivaldi, the new Web browser for power users
« Last post by tomos on April 19, 2016, 11:35 AM »
it looks like they removed the 'Email' link from the left-hand toolbar.  I wonder if they're abandoning the browser+email approach that made Opera unique, or if they figure most email is browser-based anyway, so...

from ghacks:
Vivaldi Technologies has big plans for the browser. Jon von Tetzchner had this to say about the future of the browser.

"Moving forward we will continue to focus on end user requests. As part of that we will be providing a full mail client. Advanced Internet users continue to use many mail accounts and we feel that there is a significant hole in the market there. But generally we will continue to improve and innovate, based on end user demand and requirements."

^ one of my older sisters had The Lord of the Rings so I got to read it at an early age -- unfortunately it had no illustrations. Have seen a book just lately with pictures / letters he sent his kids 'from' Father Christmas and Polar Bear:

Must have a look see if the illustrated Hobbit book is affordable...

Why on earth do we not have a single screenshot of Tom / tomos crossing any of the big borders?
Not 9999 or 10,000 or 10001. What went wrong?! Please, someone!

lol, I was bogged down with lots of stuff in the last while and then on (more or less offline) holiday.
Did capture this, but never got round to posting it

Hmm. Interesting. Is it just me, or do the colours look brighter/richer on the grey background screenshot clip, and a bit washed-out on the normal blue background?
I've changed my screen background back to grey, and it still seems to me as though the grey screenshot has richer colours.
I produced the clips in exactly the same way - OneNote screen clipper to capture the image into CHS, then ScreenshotCaptor to apply a frame and shadow.

they do look brighter - but they aren't :-)
The same colours can look incredibly different depending on adjoining/surrounding colours.

I saw a video a while back of someone using Word to create (I think) an image of a smartphone start screen. Was very impressively done. Not sure was it here (anyone else remember that?)

Looks interesting, going to have to keep an eye on that.

I think it is hard to compete with Photoshop because it is such a kitchen sink.

There is that, but I think it's simpler in scope, and harder to beat: They are the known name in the field.  Just like "you can't go wrong with Microsoft" was the mantra for a while, "you're not a real artist if you're not using Photoshop" is a real thing.

yeah, the Creative Suite is a bit like Office too. Plus Photoshop has all the fancy plugins etc etc. But who really needs all that, especially now: I suspect people that might have bought before think would twice about a subscription. Or they subscribe and realise they're not using it enough to justify the cost and cancel.

I guess it's partly because it's got the kitchen sink that's it's such a snail. But then I think that speed was never particularly important for Adobe. When I first started using vector programmes, Illustrator 8 was a snail in comparison to Freehand 9. I eventually bought ai CS4 and it was slower again.
Earlier versions of Photoshop were quite fast though. (I dont have experience with anything more recent than Photoshop CS2. For fine-tuning photographs I was happily using Photoshop 5.5 for over ten years -- combined with a select edges plugin, it was all I needed.)

I think there could be a very big market for almost-as-good-as-Photoshop software.
(I see Sagelight appears to be dead.)

I'm just after signing up for the Affinity Window's beta programme.
https://affinity.ser...f.com/en-us/windows/

Affinity Photo (image editor)
Affinity Designer (Vector software)

I'll focus on Affinity Photo, as that's what I have the most info about (and it sounds the more promising of the two).
Affinity Photo:
from Serif, has been available on mac for over a year now. It aims to compete directly with Photoshop. They emphasise that their software is 50US$ which includes two years updates, in contrast to Photoshop which requires a subscription -- with Lightroom, 8 to 10US$/month (+taxes), depending on location.

All that's no good if it dont work. Here's what they promise:
https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/photo/
These days it's often difficult to get a simple list of features on websites... so, a video:
https://vimeo.com/132757806

Quotes from reviews of the mac version:
[..] running a Macbook Pro 15" with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB Hybrid Drive.
As a rough comparison, my Photoshop install typically takes between 45 seconds to 2 minutes to boot up and start running. Affinity Photo takes between 10-20 seconds.
//
Where Affinity really shines is its speed and price. It is definitely affordable, and its performance is spectacular. It is fast, well organized and has almost everything that most image editors might require on a daily basis. It has all of the brushes you need to get the job done, with a lot of customization features.

(March 10, 2015)

Overall, Affinity Photo is a fabulous program that really does rival the best professional and enthusiast-level image-editing packages on the market. It easily takes the lead over previous Serif programs that we've seen for PC, and is a worthy winner of Apple's 'Mac App of the Year' award, 2015.

General Software Discussion / Re: Picasa to be 'phased out'
« Last post by tomos on March 16, 2016, 06:30 AM »
Another good thing about Picasa:
it wont upload duplicates from e.g. SD card, unless told to do so.

Anyone know of another easy way to avoid duplicates when copying files from SD etc. on windows 7?
(This not a problem for myself, as I always format SD card in camera after uploading. But many people like to keep images on their cameras, and *some* people I know upload multiple gigabytes multiple times leading to great fun with duplicate files...).

And btw (and a bit late) but anyone I know who uses Picasa just use it locally.

If you're going to delete anything, probably best to close the programme first if it's running e.g. via the tray icon (right-click: exit).
Also: could it be possible that this was a portable version?
Did the uninstallers actually find the programme?

And purely for recreation, Haven Kimmel's A Girl Named Zippy. One of the best coming of age autobiographical essays ever. There isn't a page without at least one funny anecdote of quotable sentence on it.

hadnt this post before today 40:
just read this book lately (was put off by the cover, but I'm slow to refuse a book in English) and it *is* a seriously enjoyable book. Not at all as wholesome as the cover suggests (sort of prefect 1950's) but wholesome in a much more down to earth and real manner. Will read again at some stage (cant give higher praise really).

Sometimes here it shows behind windows instead of ontop -- quick solution is to turn it off, and then on again (which I do via tray icon context menu).
That might solve it.

@mouser: Note I'm using an older version (4.12) on this (win.7) machine - if that behavior persists after update I will report it properly.
