General Software Discussion / XYplorer is not responding.

NOTE: This thread was originally a reply in the Windows now has banner ads thread, and was moved here in an attempt to keep that other thread on topic. The original conversation is below:

But maybe it's time to re-evaluate XYplorer and see what all the hubbub is about.

Nope. I still can't do XYplorer. It frequently locks up on me for several seconds at a time.

I've been perfectly happy with Windows Explorer all these years. Well, with some minor gripes starting in XP or Windows 7 that got fixed in Windows 10 (until the ads showed up). I even bought a license to XYplorer several years ago and went back to Windows Explorer because I just didn't see how XYplorer was any better for my needs.

But maybe it's time to re-evaluate XYplorer and see what all the hubbub is about.

Another wrinkle: I disabled that option as suggested to keep the ads from appearing, but today the ad appeared again. I checked that option and it's still disabled. So either I did something else wrong or it doesn't actually disable that ad after all.

It doesn't bother me too much as it is an ad for a MS product. If they started selling banner ads to other 3 party companies then that is different.

While I'm inclined to agree with you ... The phrase 'War of Inches' does come to mind.

If the crowd reaction isn't harsh enough, this could easily get a lot worse rather fast.

Agreed. With both of you. :)

Though if the ad keeps coming back, that's going to make me feel a lot less accepting of it.

I think wraith808 was saying that when someone unilaterally says "you should be using product X" or "you should not be using product Y" that is what is condescending. I don't think that he meant that what you said was condescending.

Surely they aren't showing ads for those who paid for Windows 10.

Anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise:

After a quick search, I found several news outlets have reported on this in the past couple of days. I clicked on one, somewhat randomly, and skimmed through it and found this:

Luckily, there appears to be an easy way to banish File Explorer ads—though sadly, it's not tied to any of the settings you need to disable Windows 10's other ads.

Open an Explorer window and go to View > Options > Change folder and search options. In the properties window that opens, click on the View tab, and under Advanced settings scroll down and uncheck “Show sync provider notifications.” The list is organized alphabetically.

Thanks for exploring recent LDs and writing about some of your discoveries.

It might be worth mentioning that the theme for the December LD was "One Room." In my opinion, part of the fun of looking at LD entries is seeing how they used the theme in their game.

Couldn't this be done with "Find and Replace"?

  • Select the text you want to modify.
  • Do a search for " "
  • Do a replace for ""
  • Done.

NTP is a good reason for a clock to access the internet...is it not?  But I agree on the general gist.

I'm talking about the Clock app, which allows you to set alarms, see the current time in different time zones, have cooking (countdown) timers, as well as sports (count up) timers. All of those features should run on the local system time.

I briefly perused my data and it showed about a million things saying something like "Set Alarms and Timers" on Android for my account.

In other words, for some reason the Clock app keeps phoning home several times per day saying I've changed things when I haven't. And who would expect their clock to make regular reports on them anyway?

Pretty cool, but it kind of lost me near the end when it visualized the entire universe as a sphere, and then other universes ("the multiverse") as other spheres.

Very good.  I was skeptical at first, especially as you can't really explain it without giving too much away, so everyone was just saying watch it.  And now I'm just saying watch it. :)

I missed (or ignored or forgot) the recommendation here.

I just finished watching it due to a recommendation from a friend. I liked it. I would also recommend it.

No plot spoilers, but some discussion of the ending in more detail
I didn't realize it was only 8 episodes long. I feel like we were just getting to the heart of the mystery when suddenly everything wrapped up nicely with a bow on it, and the episode was (or felt like it was) only half over. Then the red of the episode dragged on for (seemingly) another 30 minutes like it was Lord of the Rings, with a small cliffhanger or two just before the credits rolled.

In that sense, I was kind of disappointed with the ending. It just felt sudden and rushed. But rushed so much that they then had to fill the last half of the episode with boring filler stuff. My complaint here is only with the execution of the ending. As far as the plot goes, I don't really have any significant complaints over the ending.

Color me stupid but I didn't care all that much for Arrival (great beginning, watchable throughout but it ultimately didn't pack the punch I was hoping for)

Yeah. I found Arrival to be kind of forgettable. It's certainly not in a list of my favorite movies. As I said, I felt it was decent. I certainly don't regret watching it.

And maybe if you go into it expecting it to be more along the lines of Contact, you won't be left feeling disappointed with the lack of "oomph" in the movie.

But I think I'd be fine with living the rest of my life never thinking about it again.

I've wondered if maybe there is a connection being blocked by my ad blocker. But according to the Github issue I linked earlier, it seems to be a lack of write access to the directory that is causing the problems.
Do you know the directory in question?

Yes. All the details are there in the Github issue I linked. It's my AppData/Local/Keybase folder.

And actually I probably misspoke. It doesn't have a problem writing other files to that directory. In fact there were over 50k files written to that directory, because every time it tried to write to a specific file in that folder, and it couldn't, it would instead write it to a unique temporary file. So I guess it's not a lack of directory write access, but it seems to be having trouble reading/writing one (or a few) specific file(s).

I think I was unclear: I already made a backup of my Keybase keys, so I had Revo get rid of everything that was left behind by the uninstaller. But Keybase still isn't working for me after reinstalling. :(

Seriously, use a tool like Revo Uninstaller Pro

I just tried using Revo. After the uninstaller finished, there were 3 remaining entries in the registry, and the two directories I had previously manually deleted the last time I tried it. So while it certainly did leave something behind, I wouldn't exactly call that badly behaved uninstaller, especially since with something like Keybase where private keys are concerned, you wouldn't want the uninstaller to delete those.

I rebooted and reinstalled Keybase. Same loading screen problem. :(

Keybase updated itself today and now I'm stuck on the loading screen again...

Mine did also, but it worked flawlessly.  I'm going to try on my other machine, because it didn't autoupdate, and see if I get the same results.

Mine wasn't as easily solved as last time. In fact, it's still unresolved after completely uninstalling Keybase and deleting all the folders it stores data in and rebooting before reinstalling it.

Arrival (Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi). Loved it! :-*

"When twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world, linguistics professor Louise Banks is tasked with interpreting the language of the apparent alien visitors."

For whatever reason some people don't seem to understand the movie, but it still made it (currently as #209) into IMDb's Top Rated Movies. Will watch it again some day for sure!

I watched this last week. It didn't go in the direction I thought it would go from watching the trailer. I was expecting a bit more action or, at the least, something along the lines of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008). But it was more slow, thoughtful, and philosophical. It reminded me a lot of Contact (1997). When it was over, I wasn't sure what to think about it. Ultimately, I decided that I thought it was a decent movie. I'd recommend it to people who liked Contact.

Can you link us to your old fryer so we can avoid it?
I don't get it.

Didn't you recently have an incident with a fryer with a plastic lid that melted? I assumed that was why you bought that fryer.
