will you be adding something special into the mix - if not then perhaps it's best left for another program?????????????

oh dear, looks like a can of worms has been opened with this cmyk issue.
1928
it looks like there isn't going to be a free program that works.

here's my directory opus doing it correctly. i wonder why it works on my system? I've got version 8.

lanux, the kaspersky aol anti-virus program is still okay to use. i'm still using it and it updates quite happily.

like you i was also recommending the kaspersky version to people, now it looks like i'll probably just recommend the new mcafee version instead - the people i'll be recommending it too will probably be better off with the 'security suite' anyway.

if the kaspersky version suddenly stopped updating properly then that wouldn't be too much fun but i doubt that they can do that.

LilyView appears to have the same problem as MaxView - over saturated colours.

1931
this is by no means a rigorous test but i've just checked a cmyk jpg with a few things on my system.

faststone maxview almost diplays it correctly - most of the colours look over saturated.

directory opus appears to display the image correctly.

adobe bridge does it correctly (no great surprise there).

probably not what you wanted to hear, ak_ but maybe maxview would be acceptable and if you use directory opus then you've got it already solved.

only tried this single image so maybe it was a fluke.

(if you upload an image that you are having problems with then we can try it for you.)

General Software Discussion / free aol active virus shield no more but...
« Last post by nudone on August 11, 2007, 09:07 AM »
i've been really happy using the free AOL active virus shield but it appears that they've stopped providing it.

AOL are now providing this instead, the McAfee® Virus Scan Plus-Special edition http://www.activevir...us/freeav/index.adp?, which i understand is also free.

has anyone had any experience of using this free software?

i see that is has a firewall built in - so it's a security 'suite'. mcafee can't be bad - surely?

Living Room / tv worth watching for a change

mr. dawkins will be on british tv this coming monday for the start of a two part series.

'the enemies of reason' http://en.wikipedia....he_Enemies_of_Reason

he's said to appear a little calmer this time around. no doubt he's realised his last tv outing didn't do him any favours in the 'root of all evil' http://en.wikipedia...._Root_of_All_Evil%3F

also, interesting video left out of the original 'root of all evil' series. said to leave dawkins looking a little uncomfortable as he chats with his old pal alister mcgrath http://video.google....=6474278760369344626

General Software Discussion / Re: Maxthon 2 Released
« Last post by nudone on August 10, 2007, 02:43 AM »
thanks for the ui file, Mamoun.

regrettably, i have to say that it still doesn't work like the old maxthon layout i have. yes, the 'go' and 'back' buttons are in the center but it appears to be impossible to put anything alongside the top menu toolbar.

is that enough of an excuse for me to not use maxthon 2?

well, it does seem trivial so i will try using the new version - but like darwin i use RoboForm a lot so that might be the deal breaker for me.

i probably was just being a bit defeatist when i tried maxthon 2 but your encouragement has prompted me to try again...

thanks for being here, Mamoun.

i have tried to arrange the toolbar and buttons around in maxthon 2 and i really can't get the same layout i'm happy with when using the older version of maxthon.

here's a screen shot of what i use.
maxthon1layout.jpg

it might seem trivial but this is what i'm used to and i find the position of the 'go' and 'back' button to be just how i want them, i.e. in the center of the toolbar.

i tried to set the maxthon 2 toolbar and menus the same but i couldn't do it. i will try again just to be sure.

(just wanted to say that i was trying to suggest the idea to make a junior version of farr to exist alongside the fully featured proper version - not a replacement. just thought i better clarify that.)

answer = dumb farr down so the masses aren't confused by something with more than 3 options. and give it eye candy right out of the box.

seriously, how about making a junior version of farr that is designed simply to please the reviewers and users that find farr a bit too much. just keep it really basic but trendy in appearance - give it a swanky web2.0 style website all to itself and let the acclaim flood in. perhaps.

you can find out how to set up your own video capturing device before letting the geeksquad get hold of your pc by reading the original article. http://consumerist.c...our-porns-272458.php

might be a good idea to just make everything secure first - if you think you'll be dealing with the geeksquad, etc. at some time in your future.

not sure what to say about technicians poking around on a customer's pc (looks like the desktop wallpaper might have tempted them to look further - i suppose that was the point of it).

there's no good reason they should steal files let alone personal photos - there's really no justification for that and i'd expect disciplinary action to be taken if it was reported. but is there a justification for a technician to look through your hard drive?

i'd say not but i'm sure that's simply impractical and i bet it mentions they have the right to do so in the contract you sign.

gary glitter, a uk pop star convicted of owning child porn images on his hard drive was discovered by a technician at PC World (big pc retailer in uk) when they searched his computer. why did they search through his computer during the repair job? i've no idea but i'm sure it's standard practice - especially if the machine belongs to a celebrity.

i think it's a kind of bizarre thing to pretend it doesn't happen. it's very unlikely anyone would tolerate someone coming into their home and searching through their cupboards and drawers just out of curiosity (and maybe a bit of theft thrown in for good measure), and yet this is what routinely will happen with their personal information stored on their computer when they take it in for repair.

i guess most people just think why would anyone bother to look through my hard drive but that video clearly shows how sad technicians can be - they'll take anything for a quick thrill. and i'm sure there will be situations when more valuable information has been taken like credit card and bank details if it's left unsecured in a word document (i've seen plenty of that kind of thing stored in the my documents folder on my friends computers).

really, a technician should be allowed to do just enough to get the machine working and there ought to be a law that made them think twice about doing anything more than that. i know, such a law would be nearly impossible to enforce but if there are routine checks using things like the video above then it might provide good evidence for a case against a thieving techy.

i didn't appreciate how bad things were. seems like you need to provide crippled freeware until the person using it directly contacts you to obtain a key to enable it.

i know that isn't what many developers will want to do but after hearing the argument put forward by app that's the only solution - except for abandoning the freeware way completely so these despicable leaching websites can't get away with it.

whatever, you need to implement something to get the user to return to your website. and i'd go as far as saying you need to force them, don't give them the choice to avoid doing it - if they don't like the idea, fine let the ungrateful sods go elsewhere and use something else.

i think protecting your software is paramount - lazy ungrateful users that refuse to check out your site can go to hell. of course, you can provide a nice friendly message saying why you've limited the function of the software, blah, blah.

anyway, i'm not the right person to give this advice as i'm not a developer. but i know i'd be mighty pissed off if stuff i'd made was being abused online - and i'd try to implement ways to stop it - at the expense of annoying all those ungrateful b*stards that think everything should be free.

thanks for the code. (something i'll have to look at when i can dedicate a bit of time.)

brilliant. what a great way to set up an autohotkey script.

now using filebox extentender - perfect!

thanks again, app.
1946
right, i think i'll try that then. dialogmate 2 doesn't have the 'add' feature direct from the menu. thanks for the suggestion.

i bought 'file-ex 3' a while back but stopped using it because i think it slowed the open/save dialog window opening (maybe i imagined it) so i could have just used that for the task. i shall try filebox extender (again) as it's probably simple enough for the job.

Coding Snacks / easy to locate current working folder(s)... and file(s) i suppose
« Last post by nudone on August 01, 2007, 06:53 AM »
[my memory is going but i think there might be a util that has already been mentioned on the forum that might do something similar to what i'm about to describe. suggestions please...]

your working on a 'project', that is to say, a folder that contains several files of several varieties perhaps.

the project requires several apps to work with all the files.

i'd like a tool (or a method) that allows me to quickly locate the 'project' folder i'm working with regardless of the application i'm using.

in other words, when i use the open/save dialog box from inside an application, there will be an automatic or very quick way of navigating to the 'project' folder i'm currently working with.

i'm thinking along these lines of how the util would work:

1. i specify my current project folder inside the util. the util stores the path to the folder.

2. ANY program i then use whilst working on the project has an auto or single button click method of navigating to the project folder when i open or save files.

the important part is the number of clicks required to get to the project folder. i'm thinking a single click would be about right - the idea is to cut out all the laborious navigation.

i think it might be possible to do what i'm asking with a dialog box extender - it wouldn't do the automatic part of finding the project folder but i can accept that. in this case, which file box extender would provide the least amount of clicks to set up the project folder and then retrieve it?

ta

edit:

i'm going to try to get in the habit of using 'dialogmate2' as this should cover what i want.

Hint to papertoilet, you can use the up/down arrows by holding them down :)

i've now returned and found the mouse scroll wheel very handy.

got any more skateboard ones?

I can imagine a whole skateboard cursor set, doing different tricks for different "cursor" things!

sorry, no other skateboards. if you can't find any online then i'll consider making a few - which tricks where you thinking of - it might be difficult to make them look right as there won't be any feet or legs on display.
