What's really amazing is that (so I've heard...) wild Koalas are just that... wild.
They'll happily make an attempt at ripping your face off if they feel threatened. Obviously this poor little lady had more pressing needs than exercising her fight or flight reflexes.

Heart-string-pulling pic, BTW. I've heard the fires were started by arsonists.  >:(

Aw, don't be so hard on yourself.
It was my mis-reading that caused the cognitive dissonance...

P.S. Because you were the inspiration, when (if) I do it, you'll get a licensed copy free.

RE: Shaving.

Ok, so I probably don't save much in money, but I do save a bunch of time.

When I was shaving I saved money by using a straight razor and plain soap.  :o :'(
(don't worry, once you learn to use it properly you get a better shave than with a safety razor...)
Eventually, the razor got dropped in the sink and the blade cracked so I switched to a hair shaper, which is basically the same thing with replacable blades.

When I first saw your topic I thought you were posting about mp3s that clean your iPod.
Kinda like those cassette player head cleaners, but thinking along the lines of the DVD Rewinder.

Hey that gives me an idea...
Make an mp3 of some white noise and test tones and sell it as an "iPod Cleaner" file.
iPod losing it's hip-ness? Just play iClean.mp3 once a week and you'll be back in the fanboy line!

That's my next product after Exe Fluid

General Software Discussion / Re: Linux finance management program (ALA Quicken?)
« Last post by Edvard on February 09, 2009, 07:00 PM »
If your entire financial life is on your PC, you do not want to take chances running a non-native financial application. There are too many ways you could run into problems. Wine is far from bulletproof. And Quicken also has it's share of technical problems.

If you just want to try  Ubuntu, a far better approach would be to install it via the WUBI option and keep Windows intact until you decide where you ultimately want to go.

Or install Windows in a VirtualBox or something...

Actually this article is from 2002, so I wonder if it's not so bad an idea after all.
Folks towards the end of this thread are recommending MoneyDance. Sorta telling, isn't it?

Possibly a hoax, but I found it funnier knowing the story behind it:
just-like-mommy.jpg
Here's the note the mother sent the next day:
Dear Mrs. Jones,

I wish to clarify that I am not now, nor have I ever been, an exotic dancer.

I work at Wal-Mart and I told my daughter how hectic it was last week before the blizzard hit. I told her we sold out every single shovel we had, and then I found one more in the back room, and that several people were fighting over who would get it.

Her picture doesn't show me dancing around a pole. It's supposed to depict me selling the last snow shovel we had at Wal-mart.

From now on I will remember to check her homework more thoroughly before she turns it in.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Sheffield

Wait, I just thought of another-

Don't Shave.

I don't know exactly how much I've saved in razors and shaving cream, but I'm sure it makes a difference.
Plus my Linux neck-beard is quite impressive, I must say.

Thanks for the report, Zedar.
Apparently the author of the malware is a fan of this blog. ;D

Also, a reply at that blog shows AVG catching this as Rootkit -Agent Ci.

Good to see AV engines catching up...

That's exactly what I saw.
Kind of a cop-out, in my opinion, but geez if it works so well that way, why keep maintaining a lackluster buggy fork?

It's almost like Wine is a weird sub-species of cloud computing...

Apparently it works flawlessly under Wine. Not the same, I know...

From the FAQ:
# When will a Linux version be available?

This depends in part on the porting of Kobold Quest. As soon as somebody ports this and releases it with a suitably permissive license, we'll then try to do the same with Dwarf Fortress as we are able. Kobold Quest and Dwarf Fortress are based on the same engine. The relevant forum thread is here. I currently have a tentative Linux port of Kobold Quest, but do not yet have proper license information for the code.

General Software Discussion / Re: Benchmarked: Ubuntu vs Vista vs Win7
« Last post by Edvard on February 06, 2009, 11:13 AM »
Here's hoping that Ubuntu's new Juvenile Jackass (or whatever they decide to call it) is better than Ibex.

 ;D ;D ;D

8.10 punked me good. So I'm using openSUSE for the meantime. However, the latest Fedora 11 beta offers both BtrFS and Ext4 filesystems as defaults if you want.
from the Btrfs wiki:
Btrfs is under heavy development, and is not suitable for any uses other than benchmarking and review. The Btrfs disk format is not yet finalized, but it will only be changed if a critical bug is found and no workarounds are possible.

I can wait...

I'm not taking anything in that article serious since they disabled write caching :)

Btw, Windows (at least client versions) is usually way too conservative wrt. disk caching. Probably because so many morons are "OMFG IT USES THE MEMORY I HAVE INSTALLED IN MY SYSTEM!11!1!", coming from a total lack of understanding of how filesystem cache works.

I agree. Maybe they just wanted to "take some lead out of the gloves" to measure raw throughput? It does seem kind of unfair to not let a particular OS show off some of it's best tricks...

I can't wait to try Ubuntu 9.04, and I hope it doesn't disappoint. I finally admitted 2 months ago that Intrepid Ibex has been nothing but CRAP for me and I wouldn't use it if I hadn't installed everything on it already.  >:(

Ext4 looks like a step in the right direction until either BtrFS gets it's legs  :-* or ZFS gets a GPL-compatible license.

... the details of the procedure are a bit too personal for me to want to share story online. :)
Like a colonoscopy? Had one of those done a few years ago (ulcerative colitis...  :'( ) and they gave me a cocktail for the procedure (2 different drugs mixed). I remember getting upset that I didn't have my glasses on and the doctor showing me the video screen, but otherwise I don't remember a thing.

Didn't mean to stir up the hornet's nest, it's just something I noticed and thought should be brought to attention, it's easily fixed, the whole damn thing is BETA anyways, YMMV, etc, ad nauseum...

News: Windows 7 Beta Media Player may corrupt mp3's when using Auto-Tag something-or-other.
From Neowin:
Approximately 2-3 seconds will get shaved off the beginning of MP3s if you have set your Windows Media Player 12 settings to retrieve information from the internet and update files. The default configuration for WMP12 sets this if you use the "express" option during setup.

"The problem only happens when you edit metadata on a certain class of MP3 file (a file with a header larger than 16KB). When the new metadata is written, it corrupts the beginning of the file. This can happen either when you edit the metadata from inside WMP or Explorer, or it can happen if you have WMP set to automatically fill in missing metadata using the online service and add the MP3 to your library.

Living Room / Re: Cleaning Inside the Case
« Last post by Edvard on January 31, 2009, 04:16 PM »
maybe i was unlucky, maybe i was dumb (or both).

but i'm pretty sure i've killed one cpu in one machine and almost certainly killed a stick of ram from cleaning out computer cases with a brush (a soft large paint brush).

so i'd be extra careful when you are using those vacuum cleaner attachments with the brushes on them. maybe they aren't meant to be used inside the case.
I'd almost certainly attribute your misfortune to static charges that can build up between the fine hairs those nice paint brushes are made of and the most common materials found inside a computer. See here:
http://en.wikipedia....Triboelectric_effect
The farther away two materials are from each other on the Triboelectric Series list, the more likely and larger the static charge they may build up.
The brushes most often sold for use inside a computer case are supposed to be static-neutral (closer together on the Tribolectric Series) WRT the environment you'd be using them in.
Your point is valid, however and just to be safe, it would probably be a good idea to keep one hand on an unpainted area of your case or use one of those geeky wrist straps when doing anything inside there.

I hear you, Edvard. I need another flavour of Windows like I need a hole in the head, but the hype does have me curious
Amen.
Make him get a job to pay for a copy? That might make that Linux DVD look a little sweeter. (Microsoft still plays nasty with your MBR with Win7.)
;D
He's only 11, but a hard worker already (I owe him about $100 for all the odd jobs I 'hired' him for this past summer - works better than giving him an allowance...)
He's already fairly proficient with his Mac G4 running Ubuntu and is beginning to understand some command-line stuff. I kinda wonder what he'll think of Windows 7.
Too bad about the MBR shenanigans, I was wondering about that. Booting a GAG CD ought to clear it right up...

On a further note, I took my USB drive home, partitioned and formatted a second hard drive and copied the W7 files to it. Then I rebooted and told Grub to chainload.
It worked! Sorta.
It booted up the installation program and for a second looked like it was going to work. Then it complained about not being able to find "install.wim" (it's in there, in the 'sources' folder...) so I'm stuck on that front. More later...
