General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced

If anything it will likely require some fancy computin' to avoid the upgrade.  If you are online the thing will keep trying to worm its way into your system.  I don't like the idea of automatic updates that cannot be disabled.  My Laptop cannot even run a Restore Point never mind successfully going through a string of updates.  Plus the fact the "defective" update could easily have someone's IP on it.

It may be time to diddy bop over to Linux once I squeeze all the life out of W7.

I guess they are right.  This is the last version of Windows.

Heh.  With that packaging the brand should be changed from Durex to Duress.

Err... rebranding like that is pretty hard. And forcing people to take it is, well, just rapacious. Is the company up for it? It may just be a limp proposition.

Such comments may be a bit premature.

They will probably keep making spinners in plants that already exist like audio cassettes.  It will become a niche market.

@kyrathaba: If you're using Autohotkey to develop the auto-correct script, you can look up Hotstrings.

for starters, you can use something like this below though it is not accurate due to examples such as "an umbrella" vs. "a university".

Also "a hour"

Colorado woman finds 8.52 carat diamond at Arkansas park

I don't get it.  Is the park a Mecca for careless rich tourists who just happen to drop multi-caret gems or is it a diamond field with this particular specimen larger than most?

Just another reason to stop using snake oil software.

A friend of mine had a boss who liked to say "using a prophylactic is like taking a shower with a raincoat on."  I feel the same way about computing with av running.  :)

Or something like this perhaps?

So, to reference the OP, what makes this Chromium variant different than the umpteen other Chromium variants out there?

The main feature is some kind of limitation on the number of exe instances spawned.  I don't know exactly how it is implemented.  One reason it makes a difference how the limitation is achieved is it can be problematic when launching a chromium via file association.  I can add the switch to the shortcut target line to limit the number of rendering instances.  But unless I have the browser open all the time to catch html file launches in a new tab, then one has to mess around adding the switch to the Registry entries.  I did it with chromium back when I was playing with the snapshots.  But I tried to do it with chrome portable from portableapps.com and I could not figure it out.

The other difference is the last time I tried chromium it did not show any flash video out of the box.  Mustang does.  It is a compromise.  Pretty fast loading off the disk. Not super snappy loading tabs.  Not for everyone.  I just kind of lie the feel of it.  :)

Giveaway of the Day (GOTD) is not as pretty as "Most I Want", but it has some interesting reviews/user comments of the software, as well as freeware alternatives.
Just be careful of occasional "bundle-ware" in the freeware alternatives mentioned in the User Comments section.

On GOTD first thing I look at is the thumb up vs down.  If 2/3 of the thumbs are down usually there's no point reading further.  I didn't notice the link back in this case.  Often the same software will be on more than one site.  The non-daily ones often have extended periods of availability  I'll have to make a point of reading them through.  :)

It sounds like a good product.  When programming IntelliSense or auto completion makes it much easier.  If it does that with tags it must be a great help.  Besides, any half decent page generation tool is likely to cost $50 or so if not open source.  Seems like you can't go far wrong.

I notice in the features chart free updates for 1 year.  But when I looked on Softpedia it showed Last Updated June 2014.  Granted Softpedia isn't always aware of the latest revisions.  But I would take a look at a change log to see if you are likely to get an update before the year expires.

Have you looked at any of the html output?  I get the impression it produces html that is supposed to be maintainable.. which I think is a good thing.  But if the source often looks like a paragraph and a half of " " chained together it may not be so.

From my limited experience it seemed like the best resource was forums where those who do it all day for a living give a tip here and there how to do a thing using html/css instead of generating images for everything.

Edit: I am not familiar with the software publisher in this case.  But I would try to find out if you are entitled to major version updates.  Sometimes they put things on discount because they are about to obsolete that version.  Version 11 may come out a week after you buy version 10.  ;)

It would be a great thing. I'm repeatedly hearing serious talk of embracing linux - from top-level Windows tech guys. They see where MS is taking this thing - and it looks to be a closed-ecosystem like Apple's, all kinds of information collection, nagging sale of services, and the eclipse of independent software - and they don't like it.

At the same time, Linux for the desktop is ready. It's still not as polished as Windows, but it's not far away either.

I suspect MS feels the desktop hobbyist/aficionado is expendable.  Ordinary users will get W preloaded when they buy a desktop.  They may lose some shrink-wrap sales.  But that will be more than offset by the device market revenue.

I think soon if you want to keep control of your own system then you will be running Windows < 8 or some other OS like Linux.

It is funny because I was just reading on the web that even though it never made it to a 64 bit OS there are some hobbyists and businesses that will not abandon OS/2.  I didn't investigate what the new incarnation of it costs.  Apparently there is a commercial entity that supports it.  Now the name is eComStation

I have no idea what hardware it supports etc..

OkayFreedom VPN Premium 1 Yr free

I installed it and registered the software as described in the instructions.  I haven't had a chance to test out how useful it is.  For WiFi it probably works best with providers with a Laissez-faire attitude.  Public libraries and colleges are likely to see a VPN and think you are stealing media.

But anyway, if you want to encrypt your network traffic you may want to try it.  Can't beat the price.

I was further confused by the "SSDs are already old hat" because the PCI-e mounted SSDs are SSDs. That, combined with "hard disks that work according to SSD principles" made me think this was some new technology I hadn't heard about before.

Now you mention it I heard a new technology is just over the hill.  3DHS for 3D Hamsters on Steroids.  The wheel is connected to a platter drive capable of achieving 60 rpm.  It is kind of like cruise missile where slow is good.  At that angular velocity the head hamster can read the data temporarily etched thereon.  These drives do insist on regular sleep cycles though.  Dead hamsters in drives smell really really nasty.

Miles: I have it on my Win 7 and it seems to work fine there.

Thanks for the info.  I guess it is one Registry key.  I thought perhaps all that x64 SysWow64 double registry settings stuff might throw it off.  I also found a .vbs script online to do if via wmi.

It was likely done by that guy who words the referendums on the ballot.  Like if you don't want new taxes you have to vote yes.

Does anyone know of an alternative to WhyReboot?  I checked AlternativeTo already.  It seems it hasn't been updated since 2006.  That would make it Vista and 7 8 10 unaware.

I am unaware of any such switches.

It seems in google chrome it only gives you -process-per-site and -process-per-tab

chromium used to have a --renderer-process-limit=n switch.  Searching now I don't find it.  Version numbers climb fast these days.  :)

Although I tried it in chrome myself and it seemed to work.  Maybe it is still in there but no longer documented?

When I set n to 4 and had 8 to 10 tabs open I rarely got more than a dozen exe instances.  Starting to a blank page was typically 4 instances.

Just checking a few prices I see already for sale Crucial and other brands with 3d nand technology @500GB for @$200.  I can't wait to see some really high capacity usb 3.0 sticks cheap.  So far I haven't noticed any price drop there.

Does this answer your question?
-Deozaan

Have you tried any of the switches that cut down on the number of instances?  I am curious if it would hinder performance a great deal.  I notice in Mustang it almost seems like the setting not to load a tab until active is enabled.  There is no such setting in options but maybe there is something set under the covers by the programmer who put it together.  Even when I set New Tab Fast Dial to not use a background image there is a second hesitation before the page loads.  Mustang is not blazingly fast.  But it does get off the dime faster than Firefox or Cyberfox.

and I get this as top hit:

that's probably for the Document Production Specialist and similar.  :)

Legacy coding will probably always be lurkng in the corners of every super-program for many years to come

I can see future Archeologists with a big find.  The IBM PC.  After intensive study they figured out the basic functioning of the device.  But scientists are still puzzled as to the purpose of the "InDos Flag."   ;)
