Did you know you can customize the icon shown for each browser configuration file?
Just put an icon with the same name as the configuration file except ending in .ico and it will be displayed instead.

wtf.. why not? is there no way to tell google and other search engines that you aren't supportive of a site just because you have a url to it??

how can a company like google build an entire system of reputation based on who links to who, and not provide a way for a site to link to another site and specify they aren't trying to give prestige to the site?

ok we could do that with a screenshot, but let me ask.. what harm is there in leaving it on forum where people can find it via search etc., assuming the links to the site are all marked as nofollow anyway.

Living Room / Companies Caught Spamming our Forum with Fake Posts
« Last post by mouser on July 14, 2009, 11:03 AM »
Maybe we need a thread keeping track of companies with a bad record of trying to spam our and other forums with FAKE posts that pretend to ask a question wondering about a program, and then have another user deliver an answer meant to convince people to buy/use the company's product.

Such behavior is extremely misleading and should call into question any positive review of the product.  It's highly deceitful and completely unacceptable, and is important to call out.

Mouser, could it be possible to add something to read the length of the data
Yes i can add that i think.

Note that I think Coolness is wanting to set a large string contents for the web browser, not get it.  I suggested that one way, perhaps the smart way, would be t write the large contents to a file and tell farr to open the file in the browser.  That's what farr does anyway when it comes to displaying a string in the browser.

Find And Run Robot / Re: One Alias - multiple search terms?

i was just about to suggest using a regex when you pointed out the partial typing issue not working with regular expressions..
this hasn't come up before.

i think maybe a good solution would be to modify farr so that it will match on any word in the group alias name.  then you could use "Apple Orange" just as you wanted to originally.

any objections?

From freewaregenius blog today:

If you’ve ever encountered a blocked startup app in Vista and would like a work-around that can bypass it then read on. This posting will describe how to launch an app on startup as a scheduled task, which will circumvent the startup apps list altogether. Ultimately you will be able to get your app to launch without seeing the notice in the screenshot and without having to shut down Vista’s User Account Control security infrastructure.

Sort of.  I was thinking if the entire site went down, the ISP would serve up the 404 that may be customizable.

a 404 is a page served up by the web server when a page is missing -- when a server goes down, so goes the web server program, making the server completely unresponsibe.

now, what *should* be commonplace, but is instead completely unheard of for reasons beyond my comprehension, would be a system by which a hosting company or parent network, or indeed a centralized service, which could be informed of network problems/down servers and show specific information to the user about where to go.

perhaps this would be a nice opportunity for a trusted 3d party browser plugin and web service.

i think i misunderstood what you were saying -- i was confused because i think you were talking about 2 different things.

let's take your comments one at a time.

Might I suggest a test then sometime so that people can verify they can access it before it is needed?

the backup forum is online, you can go now and verify that you can access it, and bookmark it; it's on a different server and so should be available even if main server crashes: http://forum.dcmembers.com/

Also, isn't there some way to put up a default message to tell people instead of the default 404 error message?
if you're point is that when the main donationcoder server crashes, couldn't we put up a link on the main donationcoder.com server to the backup forum that people could click.  this will depend.  if the entire server crashes, this isn't easily possible because of DNS/nameserver propagation delays, etc.  If we can, we will.  But if things go really wrong, it won't be something we have control over.  that's why it's important for people to make note of the url now.  Also pays to remember our irc chat channel (#donationcoder on efnet) which is an alternative place to go.

General Software Discussion / Re: Generic.dx Trojan
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2009, 12:28 PM »
Since i have been dispensing very generic (pun intended) advice on this thread, let me continue.

Whenever you are downloading user-posted files on a community site, it pays to be cautious.  There are some general "human" heuristics that are wise to apply:
  • Can you see anything about the person who posted the file? Are they long time members? If so, the odds of the file being harmful are pretty slight.
  • Has the file been uploaded and available for a long time? If so, and especially if there are comments posted subsequently about it, the odds of the file being harmful are pretty slight (otherwise others would have reported it).
  • If it's a brand new file uploaded by a brand new person on the site.. You may be advised to wait until others have checked it out and given it the thumbs up.

Living Room / Re: Is online access a right or a privilege?
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2009, 12:11 PM »
I guess i feel a little bit hesitant to call it a "right"..

However, i do feel like there should be something in between on one side a "right" vs. on the other side, a commercial item to be left to the private sector regardless of the social costs.

Seems to me this is perfect example of a resource that the public has every reason to insist (through their government entities and infrastructure) has become essential to modern life, and should therefore be ubiquitously available to the entire population, rich and poor -- and therefore subsidized when necessary for the public good.

there is no 404 error, you should see the page.

Also, as we've pointed out on other threads complaining about false positives, when a virus program tells you the name of the suspected virus is something like "Generic" -- that's a good sign that it's just a complete guess and has no idea if the program is harmful or not.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Why does it take FARR so long to open?
« Last post by mouser on July 13, 2009, 10:24 AM »
farr does a few things now that causes it to take a little more time to be "ready" after it is run, in order that it be a bit faster to wake up and use when triggered (it checks existence of files in launch history and check search folders, etc. -- both of which can cause windows to delay a bit if the directories aren't cached).
18872
not sure whether this is spam nor not -- it's in the right section for posting about your product but usually not meant for someone to just come paste a paragraph anonymously.

Regardless,

I am a long time registered owner of Radmin (http://www.radmin.com); it works pretty well for me and has some nice multi-monitor support (though the display update is sometimes a bit glitchy).

However, many of the free solutions have grown up a lot in the last 5-10 years and may represent good alternatives at this point, programs such as TightVNC (http://www.tightvnc.com/).

It would be nice to read a comparative review of the various remote control products (including the one that is built into Windows).

i doubt this will help you specifically since it's a little involved and it's not specifically about your issue,

but one thing that can be done in a case where you need to try out some program that you fear could be harmful to your pc is to install some Virtual Machine software, and a change detection program (like Ashampoo Uninstaller) on the virtual machine, and then run the program, and then compare snapshots of the machine using the change detection program, and look to see if any evil changes have been made to system files, etc.
