well you'll have to attend the next DC dinner and board game night then!

that's strange.. i can maybe guess what the problem is though -- the search area actually has a place for a toolbar to the right of it.
see if you can expand the window width far enough to get it back, and then drag the right end of the search box to enlarge it.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Fileinfo (file extension seeker) at top of list
« Last post by mouser on August 07, 2009, 02:52 PM »
great question, and thank you for the nice words.

you've got lots of options to solve your problem.

FileInfo is an "alias" that comes included with Farr..

So one thing you can do if you don't like it is just disable that alias.  Right-click on the FileInfo result and choose "Visit the source alias" then just uncheck the file info item.

Another thing you could do is go to the Options -> List -> Search Folders
and increase the scores for your normal start menu items, to boost it up a few hundred points so it beats out the aliases.

Another thing you could do is add a specific alias or score for a keyword you want to use to launch firefox.  for example if you ALWAYS want to be able to type f then enter to launch firefox, then add yourself an alias named F whose result is firefox.

you're right - the sound is a bit messed up, though i'm not sure what i did differently -- bad mic position maybe.  i'll try to watch for that in future.

I use a Dymo labeler for all of these things
(see my mini-review here)

It makes a *HUGE* difference in terms of usability.. you might not think it would but it really does.. the brain just seems to process these cards differently if they have clean printed label vs. hand-written.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Can FARR be used to switch between open windows?
« Last post by mouser on August 06, 2009, 02:21 PM »
that would actually be a fun plugin for someone to write -- a plugin that intercepts launch commands, and if it finds the exe already running, checks its lists of which programs should get second instances, and which programs should just be switched to.

if anyone feels like writing such a plugin, it is possible to do.

you could also manually edit the alias file, it's just a plaintext xml file -- and change the path to nircmd.
18662
do you ever get the feeling no one takes you seriously?

nah, it's all in good fun.  :)

i guess first step is to see if ANY of the nircmd aliases work -- try screensaver start.
if not, then something else is wrong.

I think many of the questions aren't suitable for simple yes/no answers - much like political polls and moral/ethical questions we all face in life.  I prefer a format where you can assign weights to your answers.

agreed -- i could have gone either way on many.

and the actual label seems less useful than the percentage breakdown.

PopUp Wisdom / Re: dont work the book selection
« Last post by mouser on August 06, 2009, 04:42 AM »
you added checkmarks on the books you wanted, and it still doesn't show any entries?

Try this:
  • go to the books tab in options
  • add checkmarks to some books
  • now right-click in that window and choose "Rescan Book Directory"
  • now select a book you added a checkmark too and see if it tells you how many entires are in that book
  • now click OK to close the options and double click on the tray icon to get a new quote.

if that's still not working, then tell me where it went wrong, and what operating system you are using.

General Software Discussion / Re: Deciphering Win7 Upgrades: The Official Chart
« Last post by mouser on August 05, 2009, 10:46 AM »
I still always prefer to do a clean install.. It's just a good opportunity to learn how to backup stuff you need and get rid of the stuff you don't.
If you can afford it, I still think the ideal solution is to upgrade PCs when you upgrade your OS, and keep your old machine as is.
