Find And Run Robot / FARR Screencasts -- What would you like to see explained?
« Last post by mouser on August 14, 2009, 10:04 AM »
So I have started posting my series of FARR video screencasts (see here).

I'd like to know if people have any particular things you like to see explained?

You know those movies or lecturers who tell you to "live every day as if it was your last" ?
Rubbish.

It seems to me that living every day as if it was your last is a great way to have a couple of weeks of fun and then wake up to find yourself in debtor's prison for decades, trying to figure out how to hang yourself with your belt.

Of course these well meaning but fatalistically short-sighted folks do have a point at the heart of what they are saying -- one needs to live in the moment, take chances, and enjoy the wonder and delight of our daily existence.

But it's also critically important for living a full life that we also take the long view, plan for the future, and find the discipline to do the things that may not be fun today but will lead to happiness down the road.

So I present you now with the "Living for the Quantum Superposition of your Future Life" Theory (otherwise known as the "Probability Distribution Theory of Daily Living").

The concept is simple -- you could die tomorrow or live another hundred years.  So you need to psychologically live for today, and also for every potential day between now and the end of your life, as best you can probabilistically estimate the probability distribution governing how likely you are to die on that future day.

Estimating such probabilities is exceedingly difficult, and that says nothing of discounting rates and quality of life differences related to physical aging.

So I would like to suggest a much simpler heuristic:
  • Live half of your days as if they were the last day of your life.
  • Live the other half of your days as if you were going to live for another 100 years.
  • Adjust this 50/50 split as you get older.

You could even try splitting each day into 50/50 blocks -- but i suggest that a per-day mode would result in less schizophrenia.  You might even alternate in week-long blocks instead of days.

One tip: if you have a family -- make sure your switching schedule is as synchronized as possible -- otherwise there could be some tension.

Good luck!

BrowserTraySwitch / Re: IE icon not captured in tray
« Last post by mouser on August 13, 2009, 09:54 PM »
i have to go check the code again, but basically BTS is a bit strange about the tray icon --
it doesnt change it based on you changing browser configurations -- it changes it by matching a saved value for one of the registry keys.
ill see if i can spot what could cause the problem with IE -- you might try re-snapshoting IE and see if that solved it.

ps. i assume you are using the most recent version of BTS?

czb has done this in some of his plugins, but i agree that it would be a great idea to make a more general plugin that allowed users to fetch web pages and extract certain info.. in fact i know someone worked on this.. i just can't remember the current status of it.

glad to hear the videos are being watched.

i've got about 15-20 more farr videos planned, so i hope to explore all the intricacies over the next week or two.

It would be helpful if you mentioned what your products, websites, etc. are.
yeah but not in this thread please -- this thread is about addressing bad behavior.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR Load Error
« Last post by mouser on August 13, 2009, 09:03 AM »
hmm that's a new one..

can you try this:
delete the entire D:\System Utilities\FindAndRunRobot\ folder
and then install again.

(if you are copying from another pc, then delete the contents of the plugins folder and the FindAndRunRobot.ini file).

If problem remains, send me ([email protected]) the file FarrTroubleshooting.log and I can also send you a special debug version which can help pinpoint the problem.

Living Room / Re: Coding Horror Asks: Are You a Digital Sharecropper?

I guess my feeling is that anything posted by someone remains their intellectual copyrighted work to do with as they please, with the exception that they shouldn't be able to remove it from the public forum except under extreme circumstances.

Living Room / Coding Horror Asks: Are You a Digital Sharecropper?
« Last post by mouser on August 12, 2009, 09:04 AM »
Jeff Atwood has been writing recently about his popular Stack Overflow site, and his thoughts on who really owns the content of social network websites, and what a users bill of rights might look like.  These ideas are relevant to any web forum, and worth discussing here.

I think you should be asking yourself some tough questions:
  • What do you get out of the time and effort you've invested in this website? Personally? Professionally? Tangibly? Intangibly?
  • Is your content attributed to you, or is it part of a communal pool?
  • What rights do you have for the content you've contributed?
  • Can your contributions be revoked, deleted, or permanently taken offline without your consent?
  • Can you download or archive your contributions?
  • Are you comfortable with the business model and goals of the website you're contributing to, and thus directly furthering?

the main rule we have on this site is that we require people to state their affiliations with sites and companies.  if you have a relationship with this site you need to say so.

I seriously hope this is a bug and not how you intended for it to look.

 ;D ;D ;D
18623
i didnt look at the page source, but the page appearance itself is nice enough.

it's one thing to complain about someone posting something a bit more advertisey than we like, but i think it's not quite in the donationcoder spirit to start saying bad things about people's sites and designs.  think how you would feel if you posted your website on a forum and all of a sudden people were criticizing it, etc.

let's endeavor to provide constructive criticism and not negativity.

hahah...
i think i can guess what happened here:

Ashraf is not a bot.  A spammer probably posted after his first post.  Then Ashraf responded.  Then the spammer's post was deleted.
Now it looks like Ashraf is accusing himself of being a spammer  ;D

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Please Read This Before Posting Here
« Last post by mouser on August 11, 2009, 04:57 PM »
VERY IMPORTANT:

While this site (unlike many) allows people to post announcements about their services, we do require that you be a real person making a real unique post telling our members about a project you are involved with.

Because of the large number of advertisers/spammers we will delete posts that are just cut and paste jobs listing standard info about your company.  You need to write a personal message here in this section if you want it to be read and not deleted.
